Andy Rooney Dies

Legendary CBS News commentator Andy Rooney, whose weekly “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney” commentaries on “60 Minutes” made him a welcome guest in millions of people’s homes across the country, died last night in the hospital in New York City of complications following minor surgery.

Born January 14, 1919 in Albany New York, Rooney began his journalism career in the U.S. Army, where he wrote for the Stars & Stripes newspaper during World War II. He would join CBS in 1949 as a writer for a number of entertainment programs, including “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts.” He wrote his first essay–a precursor to the sorts of essays he would write for “60 Minutes”–in 1964.

Rooney partnered with CBS correspondent Harry Reasoner to write and produce a number of commentaries from 1964-1968, and served as a producer on the first few seasons of “60 Minutes.” His “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney” segment became a regular feature in 1978, and it remained a staple of the program until ending it in September.

Rooney has written a regular newspaper column for Tribune starting in 1979, and has also written 16 books. He received a lifetime achievement Emmy Ward from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2003.

In his final regular “60 Minutes” appearance, Rooney reflected on his career, and as he so often did in his commentaries, he explained his thoughts in a straightforward, concise manner.

“I’ve done a lot of complaining here, but of all the things I’ve complained about, I can’t complain about my life,” Rooney said.

He is survived by his four children, as well as his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His children include ABC News correspondent Brian Rooney and WGBH and former “ABC World News” EP Emily Rooney, and one of his grandchildren, Justin Fishel, is the Pentagon producer for Fox News Channel.

Helicopter Crashes Into The East River At 34th Street; Five Aboard

NEW YORK (AP) — A helicopter with five people aboard crashed into New York City's East River on Tuesday afternoon after taking off from a launch pad on the riverbank, killing one and seriously injuring at least two.

The pilot and three others were pulled alive from the water by rescue crews shortly after the chopper went down. The body of a woman also on the Bell 206 helicopter, which was submerged in the murky water, was recovered later, police spokesman Paul Browne said.

The private chopper went into the river off 34th Street in midtown Manhattan. It's unclear what happened, but witnesses said it was sputtering and appeared to be in some type of mechanical distress.

A massive rescue effort had been under way with a dozen boats and divers in the cold, grey water before the woman's body was recovered.

The conditions of those who were rescued weren't immediately available. The fire department said at least two people were taken to area hospitals in serious condition.

An FDNY official tells the New York Times:

"One is in cardiac arrests and one is in respiratory arrest," said James Long, a department spokesman.
A man was in "serious condition" at New York University Langone Medical Center.
A second man, who Mr. Long said is the pilot, is still being treated at the location of the crash and is conscious, said Mr. Long.
ABC News reports that the passengers were all tourists from the United Kingdom.

Joy Garnett and her husband were on the dock waiting to take the East River ferry to Brooklyn when they heard the blades of a helicopter and saw it start to take off from the nearby helipad. She said she saw it do "a funny curlicue."

"I thought, `Is that some daredevil move?'" she said. "But it was obviously out of control. The body spun around at least two or three times, and then it went down."

She said the chopper had lifted about 25 feet off the ground before it dropped into the water without much of a splash. It flipped over, and the blades were sticking up out of the river. She said people on the dock started throwing in life jackets and buoys. Two people came up out of the waves.

"It didn't make much noise," she said. "It was just a splash and sunk."

The Bell 206 Jet Ranger (pictured below) is one of the world's most popular helicopter models and was first flown in January 1966. They are light and highly maneuverable, making them popular with television stations and air taxi companies. A new one costs between $700,000 and $1.2 million.
On Aug. 8, 2009 a small plane collided with a helicopter over the Hudson River, on the other side of Manhattan, killing nine people, including five Italian tourists. A government safety panel found that an air traffic controller who was on a personal phone call had contributed to the accident.

The Federal Aviation Administration changed its rules for aircraft flying over New York City's rivers after that collision. Pilots must call out their positions on the radio and obey a 161 mph speed limit. Before the changes, such radio calls were optional.

Earlier that year, an Airbus 320 airliner landed in the Hudson River after hitting birds and losing both engines shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport. The flight, U.S. Airways Flight 1549, became known as the Miracle on the Hudson plane.

Gospel Legend Dies In Chicago At 73

CHICAGO — Jessy Dixon, a singer and songwriter who introduced his energetic style of gospel music to wider audiences by serving as pop singer Paul Simon's opening act, died Monday. He was 73.

Miriam Dixon said her brother died Monday morning at his Chicago home. She said he had been sick but declined to provide additional details.

During a more than 50-year career, Dixon wrote songs for several popular singers, including jazz and rhythm and blues singer Randy Crawford. He later wrote songs performed by Cher, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole and Amy Grant.

But it was for his gospel singing – religious music that combined the rhythmic beat of blues, jazz and soul – that Dixon first gained attention. It was during an appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1972 with his Jessy Dixon Singers that Dixon first came to Simon's attention. For the next eight years, Dixon toured with the pop icon, collaborating on Simon's `Live Rhymin' Simon' and `Still Crazy' albums.

Dixon also played keyboard with Earth Wind and Fire and guitarist Phillip Upchurch.

Dixon, who began studying music at age 5, aspired to be classical pianist but told The Associated Press in a 1997 interview that he always knew his talent was destined for use in the church.

Born March 12, 1938, in San Antonio, Dixon's professional compass was set by gospel music legend James Cleveland, who heard Dixon's teen group perform at a theatre in the south Texas city. Dixon said Cleveland liked the group, but he liked Dixon more and persuaded him to move to Chicago to join his group, the Gospel Chimes, as both a singer and pianist.

Chicago's South Side was the place to be for a gospel musician, especially in the early 1960s.

"Going to church was like going to school," Dixon said. At church, he heard the likes of Mahalia Jackson and blues pioneer Thomas A. Dorsey, who is credited with creating modern gospel singing.

"Reading his (Dorsey's) music and studying it, he was the one who wrote for Tennessee Ernie Ford, Elvis Presley and Pat Boone," Dixon said. "All these people were singing his music and were making it commercial."

Dixon credited the creativity of artists like percussionist Maurice White and blues singer Willie Dixon, no relation, inspired him to compose. He started with choral music for Chicago's Thompson Community Singers, for which he sat at the keyboards. Several of his early songs have become classics, sung in churches across America, including: "Sit At His Feet and be Blessed," "These Old Heavy Burdens" and "I Love to Praise His Name."

His more recent compositions gained him even wider acceptance. Dixon's "I Am Redeemed," released in 1993, lingered on Billboard magazine's gospel chart for more than five years.

After his stint with Simon ended, Dixon rode a wave of increased gospel music interest during the 1980s to build a following in Europe.

During his 1997 interview, Dixon noted that when he first began touring on his own outside the United States in the 1980s, the small audiences didn't have much respect for gospel as religious expression.

"At first it was viewed as entertainment," he said. "But now when I go, they ask me to share my faith as a Christian."

In the United States, Dixon was a long-time fixture on composer and singer Bill Gaither's Gospel Series, video concert broadcast on religious oriented cable television stations.

During his career, Dixon was able to produce five gold records and garner several Grammy nominations.

Dixon, is survived by a brother and sister.

Herman Cain Wins Florida Straw Poll

oday’s Florida straw poll results are finally in– and whatever it is they mean for the candidates, well, it isn’t entirely clear. The winner by a 22% margin is former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain, trailed Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, only divided by one percentage point.

Cain, who gave one of the most well-received speeches at the event and came off a solid performance at Thursday’s Republican debate, received 37% of the vote at the CPACFL conference, with Perry, at 15%, the closest one behind. Romney received 14% of the vote, followed by Rick Santorum at 11%, Rep. Ron Paul at 10%, Newt Gingrich at 8%, Jon Huntsman at 2%, and rounding out the rear Rep. Michele Bachmann at 1%.

Over on Fox News, Carl Cameron declared the results a “clear message” for Perry that his debate performance did not go over so well, and that his supporters were willing to default to Cain and not Romney. For Cain himself, Cameron argued, it was a “huge, huge win” in terms of fundraising and name recognition. The news is also tremendously upsetting for the winner of the Iowa straw poll, Rep. Bachmann, given that she came in behind Huntsman.

For a full appreciation of the results, however, one must take into account that Romney, Bachmann, and New Mexico governor Gary Johnson were not on the ballot, and that Huntsman, Perry, and Paul were not at the event to campaign whatsoever.

Occupy Wall Street Protest

Tensions are rising at the Occupy Wall Street protest, currently in its eighth day, as organizers for the protest claim that 80 have been arrested. Eyewitness accounts report that "dozens" have been arrested. Police would not confirm the exact number. Videos and eyewitness accounts show violent clashing between protesters and the police.

WNYC reports that "of the dozens arrested, most were for disorderly conduct, obstructing vehicular and pedestrian traffic, resisting arrest and, in one case, assaulting a police officer, the police said."

The skirmish escalated in Union Square Saturday afternoon, as Twitter users report a huge influx of police officers. This video, below, appears to show female protesters being penned and maced by police officers:

Clemson vs Florida State

CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson's Chad Morris can't wait to see what happens when the 21st-ranked Tigers truly master his offense. Not that things have gone too badly so far.

No. 21 Clemson knocked off a ranked opponent for the second straight week as Tajh Boyd threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in a 35-30 victory over No. 11 Florida State on Saturday.

The Tigers opened 4-0 for the first time since 2007 and got a leg up in the ACC Atlantic Division by holding off last year's divisional champion Seminoles (2-2, 0-1 ACC).

And Clemson accomplished it with an offense led by first-year coordinator Morris that piles up yards, strikes for big plays and finds openings at the most critical times.

It was the Tigers fourth game this season with 455 yards or better and Boyd's second straight with 300-plus passing yards.

"I'm super excited about how our players keep growing this offense and executing. And we're only four games into this offense," Morris said. "It's crazy."

Clemson again struck best through the air. Boyd had 344 yards on 23 of 37 passing. Freshman Sammy Watkins continued his stellar year with eight catches for 141 yards and his fifth and sixth touchdown catches of 24 and 62 yards. Andre Ellington added 71 yards rushing, tied for the most the Seminoles have allowed this year.

Yet, Boyd said Clemson has had to overcome the doubters this year, those who feel the Tigers haven't progressed that far from their 6-7 season of 2010.

"We believe in ourselves so much as a team," Boyd said. "We're watching ESPN and all three people say we're not going to win the game. We feed off of that."

Florida State played without starting quarterback EJ Manuel, hurt in last week's 23-13 loss to top-ranked Oklahoma. Backup Clint Trickett kept the Seminoles in this, though, with 336 yards and three touchdown passes.

His 9-yard touchdown throw to Kenny Shaw brought Florida State to 35-30 with 7:21 to go. The Seminoles had one final chance and Shaw, taken from the Oklahoma game in an ambulance after a crunching hit, was open at midfield on the final drive but didn't make the catch. Trickett was sacked by lineman Rennie Moore on fourth down and the Tigers ran out the clock.

When it was over, Tiger fans and players celebrated like they'd won a national title, swarming the field after beating Florida State the way they had a week earlier when they ended the 17-game win streak of defending BCS champion Auburn at Death Valley.

The Seminoles were ranked fifth in the country two weeks ago and considered a national championship contender. Now, they're not even tops in the ACC Atlantic after their second straight defeat.

"It's not going to be hard" to rebound, linebacker Vince Williams said. "It's just part of the process. This is one game. That's how we look at it."

Florida State gets a week off to heal – cornerback Greg Reid and receiver Bert Reed were also absent with injuries they've had this season – before it returns to action at Wake Forest on Oct. 8.

Some thought Boyd and the Tigers would wilt under Florida State's defensive speed and pressure. Clemson got a bonus, though – several critical mistakes by the Seminoles.

A pass interference call on cornerback Xavier Rhodes kept the Tigers opening drive alive on third-and-7 and Watkins finished things off three plays later with a 24-yard touchdown grab.

Florida State's defense stuffed Ellington on third-and-short to force a punt on Clemson's second series, but a penalty on safety Lamarcus Joyner for running into punter Dawson Zimmerman gave the Tigers back the ball. Boyd found DeAndre Hopkins for a 50-yard strike to the Seminoles 2 as the Death Valley crowd chanted Hopkins' nickname, "Nuuuuuke."

Boyd scored from a yard out to put Clemson ahead 14-3.

The Seminoles were called for another pass interference on Clemson's final scoring drive of the first half and Boyd made them pay once more on tight end Dwayne Allen's 12-yard scoring run for a 21-10 lead.

Trickett, who took all the snaps in practice this week, was effective in some spots and lost in others.

He launched a beautiful ball to Rodney Smith for a 57-yard catch, the Seminoles' lone TD in the first half. But on the Florida State's next series, threw right to Clemson linebacker Quandon Christian deep in Seminoles territory.

Boyd's awful decision to throw the ball while stumbling to the ground gave Florida State a touchdown when defensive end Bjoern Werner easily picked it off and returned it 25 yards to cut things to 21-17.

Ellington regained control for the Tigers when his 1-yard scoring run ended an 11-play drive withi 3:03 remaining.

While Florida State tightened up its defense in the second half, it kept hurting itself with penalties. The Seminoles ended with 11 penalties for 124 yards.

Trickett, the son of FSU offensive line coach Rick, was 24 of 38 with an interception and two sacks, both in the second half.

Smith had four catches for 118 yards. The Seminoles again couldn't get much going on the ground with 29 yards rushing.

Debate Audience Boos Gay Soldier

During the Republican debate Thursday night, host Megyn Kelly dropped a YouTube clip on Rick Santorum: a question from Stephen Hill, a soldier in Iraq who, up until this week, had to "lie about who [he] was" in order to serve in the army.

Santorum provided Hill no succor, saying that the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" injected "social engineering" into the military.

SANTORUM: I would say any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military. The fact they are making a point to include it as a provision within the military that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege to, and removing don't ask don’t tell. I think tries to inject social policy into the military. And the military's job is to do one thing: to defend our country...
KELLY: What would you do with soldiers like Stephen Hill?
SANTORUM: What we are doing is playing social experimentation with our military right now. That’s tragic. I would just say that going forward we would reinstitute that policy if Rick Santorum was president. That policy would be re-instituted as far as people in, I would not throw them out because that would be unfair to them because of the policy of this administration. But we would move forward in conformity with what was happening in the past. Which was- sex is not an issue. It should not be an issue. Leave it alone. Keep it to yourself whether you are heterosexual or homosexual.
Of course, the big news of the exchange will once again be about an audience reaction. After Fox cut back from the clip of Hill, several members of the audience were heard, in a shocking demonstration of disrespect for one of our soldiers, lustily booing him. Very sad.

Sidenote: Fred Karger responded to that exchange by telling the Huffington Post, "Santorum is truly nuts. Just Google him. Congress repealed DADT. Federal court found it unconstitutional."

UPDATE: After the debate, Talking Points Memo reporter Evan McMorris-Santoro caught up with Jon Huntsman. When asked about the incident, Huntsman said the booing was "unfortunate." McMorris-Santoro also talked to a Perry representative, who used similar language, calling it "very unfortunate."

Bristol Palin On A Mechanical Bull At Sunset Strip (VIDEO)

Bristol Palin was crawling the Sunset Strip last night, making a stop at the infamous Saddle Ranch Chop House. As anyone who's ever been to West Hollywood knows, you can't just stop in to the Saddle Ranch without taking a spin on the mechanical bull -- especially when rolling with a reality show film crew.

Taking a look at the Celebrity GPS video above, we'd have to admit she does a pretty good job hanging on for a while -- but not everyone there appreciates the show. One heckler jeers, "did you ride Levi like that?" and calls Bristol's mom "evil." You'd think she'd kind of be used to it by now, but Bristol decides to confront him.

Bristol asks the man if he hates her mom because he's a "homosexual," and things just escalate from there. We have to admit -- it made us cringe to watch a middle-aged man call the 20 year-old Bristol Palin a "f***ing b*tch" and "white trash." But if Bristol is surprised to find "homosexuals" around West Hollywood, maybe she should find new stomping grounds. We hear Huntington Beach is nice.

Nawab Pataudi's death

Legendary cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi died today evening in New Delhi after battling with a severe lung infection. He was admitted in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for the last 4 weeks. He was 70.

"He passed away around 6.30 pm. His condition had deteriorated sinceyesterday. He was suffering from interstitial lung disease (interstitial pneumonitis) which worsens rapidly inspite of the best treatment available," Dr S P Byotra, Department of medicine in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said.
Pataudi was one of the greatest cricket captains India has ever produced. Pataudi was born on 5th January 1941 in Bhopal, nicknamed Tiger, was a former Indian captain.

Pataudi was a right-hand batsman and a right-arm medium pace bowler. Pataudi played in 46 Test matches for India between 1961 and 1975, scoring 2793 runs for an average of 34.91 with an unbeaten 203 being his highest score.
In March 1962, Mansoor was elected as the captain of the Indian cricket team. He was the youngest Indian test captain ever at age of 21. Under Pataudi’s leadership India achieved their first Test victory in foreign soil (New Zealand).

The India-England Test series trophy has been named in his honour.

Pataudi is survived by wife Sharmila Tagore and three children Saif Ali Khan, Soha Ali Khan and Saba Ali Khan.

Manchester United 3-1 Chelsea

Manchester United continued its 100 percent start to the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea. Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney, who later missed a penalty, did enough to overcome Fernando Torres' reply, in a match that was tumultuous, thrilling and frequently baffling.

Sir Alex Ferguson followed through on his vow to restore David de Gea between the sticks having given Anders Lindegaard a run-out against Benfica in midweek. Darren Fletcher also started despite only having played 60 minutes since returning from a long lay-off with a mystery virus. Chelsea, meanwhile, stuck with the misfiring Torres up front.

The home side, though, took its first opportunity – after Jose Bosingwa brought down Ashley Young on the United left, the winger swung the free-kick into the box, and the anonymous Chelsea defence allowed Smalling acres of space in which to head home, although TV replays suggested he was slightly offside.
Chelsea was dominating the attacking play in search of an equalizer, but a relatively rare United foray forward was nearly decisive when Nani clipped a cross into the center of the box towards Rooney, but Meireles made a crucial interception.

The Blues should have equalized immediately after, as, on the break, Juan Mata fed Torres through the inside-left channel, who pulled it across the box into the path of Ramires, but the midfielder made a mess of a shot he should have buried and de Gea snatched it.

And sure enough, Chelsea was made to pay for its variety of squandered chances, when, out of nowhere, Jonny Evans brought Nani into play with a long cross-field pass. The winger moved slowly and deliberately inside a compliant Mata before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards to throw Andre Villas-Boas’ plans into further chaos – and again, technology intimated that Nani was offside when he received the ball.

A few minutes later, just as Chelsea considered regrouping at half-time, Phil Jones drove relentlessly forward into the penalty area and, as he fell to the floor, the ball popped up out of the mess of players into the path of Rooney, who could not have missed, and so Chelsea, for long periods the superior side, perplexingly reached the break 3-0 down.

Villas-Boas reacted by bringing on Nicolas Anelka for Lampard, and it brought immediate results as the Frenchman played Torres through precisely from the left, and the Spaniard finally scored his second Chelsea goal, a beautiful chip over the helpless de Gea.

Suddenly, with Chelsea pouring forward, United broke and Nani rattled the crossbar with a monstrous shot, but any disappointment was erased when he was awarded a penalty, Bosingwa judged to have brought him down, although it appeared that he got as much of the ball as the player. But, to shock, Rooney’s comical slip from the spot saw him launch the ball skywards, with the watching John Terry reminded of one night in Moscow.

The Blues kept pushing but stuttered a little and the next real chance fell again to the hosts, as Jones rose to meet Young’s cross from the short corner, but the ex-Blackburn man’s header was weak and wide. A corner at the other end then saw substitute Romelu Lukaku look for a second as if he had broken free from Patrice Evra to poke home, but the left-back somehow got back in time to block him.

Later, Ramires removed the entire United back line from the equation with a brilliant through-ball for Torres, who rounded de Gea and had to score, yet somehow contrived to shoot unacceptably wide in the face of an impossibly easy open goal.

As the match moved into stoppage time, Dimitar Berbatov seemed certain to bury a fourth, fed by Rooney on the break, but a heroic last-ditch run from Cole was enough to reach the ball in time. But Chelsea could not summon enough to find a comeback before the game's end.

Sikkim earthquake

Sikkim earthquake toll rises to 66
GANGTOK: Landslides and inclement weather today hampered rescue operations in quake-hit Sikkim as the death toll in the 6.8 magnitude tremblor mounted to 66, including 39 in the Himalayan state.

The earthquake, which struck last evening, left a trail of devastation damaging roads, buildings and other structures, uprooting mobile phone towers and snapping communication and power lines. After shocks made people panic in several areas forcing them to spend the night outdoors.

West and South districts in Sikkim remained inaccessible to the Army due to landslides and inclement weather and rescuers were facing an uphill task to reach these areas, Major General S L Narasimhan, GOC 17 Mountain Division told reporters here.

Sikkim accounted for 39 deaths alone, with most casualties taking place in the North District and in towns and villages like Rangpo, Dikchu, Singtam and Chungthang located along the course of Teesta river, officials in the district control room said.

Eight persons travelling in a bus of Teesta Urja Limited in North District are presumed dead as their vehicle got stuck under debris caused by a landslide, Narasimhan said. This, however, has not been incorporated in the official figure of those killed.

The overnight toll climbed to 66 which included six deaths in West Bengal and seven each in Bihar, Nepal and Tibet, official reports said. Over a hundred people have been injured.

Narasimhan said army has launched 'Operation Madad' in Gangtok and other areas by deploying over 2,500 troops."We are also sending teams to Darjeeling and Kalimpong (in West Bengal)," he said.

A group of 14 tourists were rescued by the army from north Sikkim last night, Narasimhan said.

Oklahoma Sooners Beat Florida State Seminoles

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Kenny Stills reached high to grab a 37-yard touchdown pass from Landry Jones midway through the fourth quarter for the tiebreaking score, and Oklahoma's defense made the lead stand as the top-ranked Sooners beat No. 5 Florida State 23-13 on Saturday night.

Javon Harris picked off two passes for the Sooners (2-0), who forced three turnovers and harassed both Florida State quarterbacks all night.

The Seminoles (2-1) played the final 20 minutes without starting quarterback E.J. Manuel, who left in the third with a left shoulder injury.

Backup Clint Trickett kept the Seminoles in it. He hooked up with freshman Rashad Greene for a 56-yard touchdown on a third-and-28 with 9:32 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 13.

But on the next possession, Jones went deep down the sideline to the 6-foot-1 Stills, who easily outleaped the 5-8 Greg Reid for the touchdown.

Trickett couldn't respond. On the next drive, he had a pass tipped at the line by Ronnell Lewis, and Harris came up with his second interception near midfield. Just like the first pick, Oklahoma turned it into a field goal, this one from 31 yards out by Jimmy Stevens.

Jones finished 18 for 27 for 199 yards with two interceptions, though he did become the school's career passing leader, moving past Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford.

A rematch of a lopsided 47-17 Oklahoma victory in Norman last season, this was more reminiscent of the most important game these two heavyweight programs have played. The Sooners won their last national championship in 2000 by beating the Seminoles 13-2 in the Orange Bowl.

The Sooners scored a touchdown on their first possession and one of the most potent offenses in the country didn't find the end zone again until the fourth quarter. Florida State looked as if it would never get there.

Then Greene's touchdown sent most of the record crowd of 84,392 at Doak Campbell Stadium into hysterics. Like Stills, he went high in traffic to come down with Trickett's pass then broke free from the pack and raced for the score.

Trickett was 7 for 15 for 134 yards for Florida State, which had no running game beyond Manuel's 49 yards.

Oklahoma seemed to pick up right where it left off last year in Norman on the first drive of the game, zipping down field with little resistance for an 80-yard drive that ended with Jones' 1-yard touchdown sneak.

Dustin Hopkins booted a 53-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 2:42 left in the first.

Turnovers, penalties and defense dominated the rest of the way.

Manuel made some nifty plays on the run, jumping over one of his lineman on the way to a 12-yard gain in the second quarter. But the junior also was intercepted twice in Oklahoma territory. The first was on a ball batted into the air behind the line and grabbed by linebacker Tom Wort.

The second came late in the half when Harris grabbed a high throw and returned it 69 yards to the Florida State 3 with 1:19 left in the quarter.

But for the second time in the half, the Sooners got inside the 5 and settled for a field goal. After a penalty pushed OU back, Stevens kicked a 29-yarder to make it 13-3 as time expired in the half.

Florida State's best shot to get in the end zone in the first half came when Manuel found Kenny Shaw deep down the middle inside the 5, but the receiver was sandwiched by Wort and Harris, taking a double-helmet shot, and the ball came out. The Sooners were flagged 15 yards for the hit and Shaw lay motionless on the turf for several minutes. He was carted off, conscious and moving his arms, and taken to the hospital for X-rays. He later returned to the sideline in the fourth quarter.

The Sooners' defense got a boost with the return of star linebacker Travis Lewis, who came back earlier than expected from a broken left toe to start against Florida State.

With 5:42 left in the third quarter, Manuel was swarmed under by Oklahoma on a third-and-2 play that never had a chance and the quarterback came off the field wincing, holding his left arm close to his body. He went to the locker room to have his shoulder examined, and Trickett took over the offense after Lamarcus Joyner intercepted a deep ball by Jones.

With no running game to help him, Trickett, a redshirt freshman and the son of Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett, led the Seminoles to Hopkins' 46-yard field goal to make it 13-6 with 53 seconds left in the third.

Reno Air Show Plane Crash: Airplane Crashes Into Stands At National Championship Air Races In Nevada (VIDEO)

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A World War II-era fighter plane flown by a veteran Hollywood stunt pilot plunged Friday into the edge of the grandstands during a popular air race, killing three people, injuring more than 50 spectators and creating a horrific scene strewn with smoking debris.

The plane, piloted by 74-year-old Jimmy Leeward, spiraled out of control without warning and appeared to disintegrate upon impact. Bloodied bodies were spread across the area as people tended to the victims and ambulances rushed to the scene.

Authorities were investigating the cause, but an official with the event said there were indications that mechanical problems were to blame.

Maureen Higgins of Alabama, who has been coming to the air races for 16 years, said the pilot was on his third lap when he lost control.

She was sitting about 30 yards away from the crash and watched in horror as the man in front of her started bleeding after debris hit him in the head.

"I saw body parts and gore like you wouldn't believe it. I'm talking an arm, a leg," Higgins said "The alive people were missing body parts. I am not kidding you. It was gore. Unbelievable gore."

Among the dead was Leeward, of Ocala, Fla., a veteran airman and movie stunt pilot who named his P-51 Mustang fighter plane the "Galloping Ghost," according to Mike Houghton, president and CEO of Reno Air Races. Officials earlier said Leeward was 80.

Renown Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Kathy Carter confirmed that two others died, but did not provide their identities.

Stephanie Kruse, a spokeswoman for the Regional Emergency Medical Service Authority, told The Associated Press that emergency crews took a total of 56 injury victims to three hospitals. She said they also observed a number of people being transported by private vehicle, which they are not including in their count.

Kruse said of the total 56, at the time of transport, 15 were considered in critical condition, 13 were serious condition with potentially life-threatening injuries and 28 were non-serious or non-life threatening.

"This is a very large incident, probably one of the largest this community has seen in decades," Kruse told The Associated Press. "The community is pulling together to try to deal with the scope of it. The hospitals have certainly geared up and staffed up to deal with it."

The P-51 Mustang, a class of fighter plane that can fly at speeds in excess of 500 mph, crashed into a box-seat area in front of the grandstand at about 4:30 p.m., race spokesman Mike Draper said. Houghton said Leeward appeared to have "lost control of the aircraft," though details on why that happened weren't immediately known.

Houghton said at a news conference hours after the crash that there appeared to be a "problem with the aircraft that caused it to go out of control." He did not elaborate.

He said the rest of the races have been canceled as the NTSB investigates.

KRNV-TV weatherman Jeff Martinez, who was just outside the air race grounds at the time, said the plane veered to the right and then "it just augered straight into the ground."

"You saw pieces and parts going everywhere," he said. "Everyone is in disbelief."

Tim Linville, 48, of Reno, said the pilot appeared to lose partial control off the plane when he veered off course and flew over the bleachers near where Linville was standing with his two daughters.

"I told the girls to run and the pilot pulled the plane straight up, but he couldn't do anything else with it," Linville told the AP. "That's when it nosedived right into the box seats."

Linville said after the plane went straight up, it barrel rolled and inverted downward, crashing into an area where at least 20 people were sitting.

"If he wouldn't have pulled up, he would have taken out the entire bleacher section," and hurt thousands of people, Linville said.

Linville said the plane smashed into the ground and shattered like an enormous water balloon, sending shrapnel and debris into the crowd.

"It was just flying everywhere," he said.

Leeward, the owner of the Leeward Air Ranch Racing Team, was a well-known racing pilot. His website says he has flown more than 120 races and served as a stunt pilot for numerous movies, including "Amelia" and "Cloud Dancer."

In an interview with the Ocala (Fla.) Star-Banner last year, he described how he has flown 250 types of planes and has a particular fondness for the P-51, which came into the war relatively late and was used as a long-range bomber escort over Europe. Among the famous pilots of the hot new fighter was WWII double ace Chuck Yeager.

"They're more fun. More speed, more challenge. Speed, speed and more speed," Leeward said.

Leeward talked about racing strategy in an interview Thursday with LiveAirShow TV while standing in front of his plane.

"Right now I think we've calculated out, we're as fast as anybody in the field, or maybe even a little faster," he said. "But uh, to start with, we didn't really want to show our hand until about Saturday or Sunday. We've been playing poker since last Monday. And uh so, it's ready, we're ready to show a couple more cards, so we'll see on Friday what happens, and on Saturday we'll probably go ahead and play our third ace, and on Sunday we'll do our fourth ace."

Houghton described Leeward as "a good friend."

"Everybody knows him. It's a tight-knit family. He's been here for a long, long time," Houghton said.

He also described Leeward as a "very qualified, very experienced pilot" and that he was in good medical condition. He also suggested Leeward would have made every effort to avoid casualties on the ground if he knew he was going to crash.

"If it was in Jimmy's power, he would have done everything he possibly could," Houghton said.

The National Championship Air Races draws thousands of people to Reno every year in September to watch various military and civilian planes race. They also have attracted scrutiny in the past over safety concerns, including four pilots killed in 2007 and 2008. It was such a concern that local school officials once considered whether they should not allow student field trips at the event.

The competition is like a car race in the sky, with planes flying wingtip-to-wingtip as low as 50 feet off the sagebrush at speeds sometimes surpassing 500 mph. Pilots follow an oval path around pylons, with distances and speeds depending on the class of aircraft.

The FAA and air race organizers spend months preparing for air races as they develop a plan involving pilot qualification, training and testing along with a layout for the course. The FAA inspects pilots' practice runs and brief pilots on the route maneuvers and emergency procedures.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., issued a statement saying he was "deeply saddened" about the crash.

"My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives and with those who were wounded in this horrific tragedy," he said. "I am so grateful to our first responders for their swift action and will continue to monitor this situation as it develops."

Strengths: Floyd is very fast, especially for a welterweight. He also is a masterful defensive fighter, possibly the best the sport of boxing has seen since Pernell Whitaker was making men punch air. That defense and speed matched with very solid accuracy makes Floyd a dangerous counter-puncher. In recent fights though, Floyd has really opened up with his lead right hand and brought the fight to men like Mosley more than would normally be expected. Finally, Mayweather's strengths in other areas lead to the fact that he has power in both hands being overlooked. His power isn't always properly used, but it exists enough to keep opponents honest. He truly is a complete fighter.

Weaknesses: When a man has had the level of success that Mayweather has, you have to resort to nitpicking and speculation to really find weaknesses. There are openings to counter Floyd, and the few times he has been hurt have been the direct result of leaving his chin open when punching. You must catch Floyd on the counter as you're going to have trouble finding him if he is in defensive mode. Mayweather is also a one-shot fighter. Going back through his career he has not been a guy who lets combinations go often at all.

One also has to question the fact that Floyd is 34 years old with a style predicated on reflexes and fast twitch muscles. This is a style that typically leads to a sudden, sharp decline at a younger age than most traditional boxers. Given that we've only seen Floyd fight twice since the start of 2008 and that was against an old Mosley and an outsized Marquez it's hard to know exactly where he is in his overall career arc. One also has to go back to 2006 to find Floyd fighting a legitimate welterweight who wasn't "over the hill."

Strengths: Ortiz has big power in both hands and has yet to find an opponent he can't drop. He also is willing to use that asset, throwing punches with bad intentions at all times. In the Berto fight, it looked like Ortiz has always belonged at welterweight. He looked strong at the weight and his cardio held up well throughout the fight. Being a southpaw is more of an advantage than fighting orthodox when it comes to fighting Mayweather and you certainly can't fault Victor for not being active enough given that he has fought as much since 2010 as Floyd has since 2005. While heart is a question, Ortiz has shown the ability to get off the canvas and still do solid work.

Weaknesses: Victor can be dropped, both Marcos Maidana and Berto were able to do so on more than one occasion. The elephant in the room is the question of Victor's heart. In the very entertaining battle with Maidana, Victor was up 48-45 on all three judges scorecards but suffering from a cut and having been knocked down in the sixth round, Ortiz quit. To make matters worse, he said in the post fight press conference that he "didn't deserve" to be beaten up the way he was and that he had some thinking to do. In some ways the Berto fight addressed this issue, but it's going to take more than one fight to erase that moment from the minds of boxing fans. If frustration is something that makes Victor want out of the ring, fighting a guy that is as hard to hit while effective offensively as Mayweather may break the young Ortiz's spirit quickly.

Ortiz's power punching style makes him very "counterable" for a guy with Floyd's gifts. He isn't always the most accurate fighter which only adds to the problems he may have once Mayweather gets his timing and rhythm established.

Brookhouse: Is Victor A Legitimate Threat To Floyd's Legacy?

The Fight

It isn't going to take long to see how the fight will play out. If Ortiz can't find success in the first two or three rounds, he isn't likely to find it at any point, barring clipping Floyd as the fight wears on. Victor has to make a decision immediately after the opening bell. Will he headhunt and try to hurt and finish Floyd before he can get rid of the ring rust and find his rhythm? Or will he go old school and work the body to sap the speed and open up the head as the rounds wear on?

Mayweather needs to not get caught up in a shootout, it's not his style so there isn't a huge risk of seeing it happen. If he can counter Victor effectively in the opening rounds, it will likely make Ortiz reluctant to fire the power punches and allow Floyd to dictate a comfortable rhythm.

Ortiz will also likely need to accept some punches to open up his offense. If at any point in the fight he is going backward and isn't the attacking fighter, he is losing. It comes down to pressuring Floyd and fighting like the younger man. If he can keep Mayweather from getting comfortable he might be able to make him fight like the "old man" Victor claims he is.

The Prediction

I have a bad habit of convincing myself that an upset is coming in the big fight. There is a part of my brain that I've already convinced that Victor will tag and hurt a Mayweather that simply isn't used to fighting young, big welterweights.

But I can't bring myself to follow through with that pick.

Assuming we see anything close to "normal Floyd" rather than an old, rusty fighter, he is simply a better fighter than Victor Ortiz. While no one should overlook Victor in this fight, and the possibility of him knocking out Mayweather does exist, it's simply more likely that Mayweather controls the pace of the fight and hits more than he gets hit in typical Pretty Boy style.

Kenyan Gasoline Pipe Explosion

NAIROBI, Kenya — A leaking gasoline pipeline in Kenya's capital exploded on Monday, turning part of a slum into an inferno in which at least 61 people were killed and more than 100 hurt.

Flames leapt out from the pipeline in a radius of some 300 yards (meters), setting shacks ablaze and incinerating scores of people. Reporters later saw clusters of charred bodies and blackened bones at the site. Some burned bodies floated in a nearby river filled with sewage. Homes had been built right up to the pipeline, the residents said.

"I've lost count of the number of bodies," said Wilfred Mbithi, the policeman in charge of operations in Nairobi as he stood at the scene. "Many had dived into the river trying to put out their flames."

Provincial Commissioner Njoroge Ndirangu said at least 61 bodies have been recovered so far, but said the death toll from the blast will rise.

Nearby, a young woman clawed through smoldering timbers, screaming in grief. Others wandered by the remains of the inferno, frantically dialing phone numbers that didn't go through or staring around in disbelief.

Fires still smoldered among the twisted wreckage of corrugated iron sheets and scattered possessions. Visibility was poor because of rain and smoke.

Resident Joseph Mwangi, 34, said he was feeding his cow when people went running past him, calling out that there was a leak in the pipeline. He said others started drawing fuel and that he was going to go and get a bucket and get fuel too when he heard an explosion around 9 a.m. By then fuel had leaked into the river and parts of the river had also caught fire. People in flames were jumping into the fiery, stinking mess, he said.

Moments after speaking to the AP, Mwangi discovered two small charred bodies in the burnt wreckage of his home.

"Those were my children," he said blankly, before collapsing on the ground sobbing.

Another man, Michael Muriuki, found the body of his 5-year-old daughter still smoldering. He ran to the river for water to put her out. He took a deep breath and struggled for control before speaking.

"Her name was Josephine Muriuki. She was five," he said.

At the time of the explosion, the narrow, twisting alleyways would have been packed with people on their way to work or school who had stopped to try to scoop up fuel. The flimsy homes of corrugated iron sheets would have offered little resistance to the blast.

The Red Cross was conducting search and rescue operations and had set up two tents for first aid and counseling, said Bernard Magila, who was helping the operation. Bodybags and materials for temporary shelter were also being provided.

At least 112 burn victims have arrived so far at Kenyatta National Hospital and they urgently need blood donors and blankets, said Richard Lisiyampe, the head of the hospital. Many children were among the victims. Most had burns covering more than a third of their bodies, he said. Some were unrecognizable, said St. John's Ambulance Service spokesman Fred Majiwa.

Inside the hospital, beds were crowded together and doctors and nurses rushed from victim to victim. Many had long strips of skin hanging from their heads and bodies. One man picked at his hands distractedly, peeling off skin like gloves. Relatives clustered outside operating rooms, waiting for news.

"This is a terrible accident," said Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who visited the wounded in hospital. He said the government would cover medical expenses for the injured and pay compensation to those who lost loved ones. He also said he had visited the offices of the Kenya Pipeline Company, who operate the pipeline.

They had told Odinga that the explosion was caused by a leak from the pipeline into nearby sewage, he said. Workers who answered the phones at their offices declined to give a comment or their names.

"There will be a proper investigation," Odinga said.

In 2009, at least 120 people were killed when they were trying to scoop fuel spilled from a crashed petrol tanker in Kenya and it exploded.

Those of you hoping to ease back into "Sons of Anarchy" with the Season 4 premiere are A) probably disappointed and B) probably watching the wrong show.

Fourteen months have passed in "SOA" time since the end of last season, but there's next to no looking back in the jam-packed 90-minute premiere. By the end of the episode at least three major story lines are in play, and it feels as if we're in for a relentless season.

The season opens with SAMCRO being released from prison after just over a year and returning to a Charming that's starting to look a lot different than the one they left. Before they even reach town, the club passes a sign for a new, upscale subdivision, and when they do arrive, they discover that the county sheriff has taken over law enforcement in town, and the lieutenant in charge of patrolling Charming (Rockmond Dunbar) is not going to be the friendly sort.

In short order we learn that the feds are hoping to crack down on the Sons using the RICO organized-crime statute; that Jax spent much of his time in prison thinking about getting out of the club (his much-teased "greed and fear" speech, it turns out, is to Tara); and that the club's business relationship with the Russians is going to be a temporary one.

The exclamation point for that last thread comes at Opie's wedding, where -- in a "Godfather"-ish sequence scored to a cover of "It's a Wonderful World" -- Jax, Clay and Co. kill Viktor Putlova and several members of his crew and take possession of a huge shipment of guns. Even the prison-bound Otto ("SOA" creator Kurt Sutter) gets in on the action, taking retribution on one of Putlova's men who shivved Jax.

It's a major statement on SAMCRO's part, and it will likely cause huge ripple effects throughout the rest of the season. Because we're sure it won't take long for word about what happened at the wedding site to reach the cops.

SANTIAGO, Chile — A Chilean air force plane with 21 people aboard, including a popular local television host, crashed Friday near the Juan Fernandez islands in the Pacific Ocean, authorities said.

The CASA 212 military plane tried twice to land at the airport on the remote Chilean island but strong wind gusts buffeted the aircraft and it later was lost from sight, said Felipe Paredes, a local council member who was in the airport's control tower at the time.

Rescuers in boats were searching for the plane and survivors, but the mayor of Juan Fernandez, Leopoldo Gonzalez, said some luggage had been found in the water and it was clear the plane crashed.

"We assume that there was an accident and that there are no survivors," Gonzalez said.

Rescue teams later found an intact door and several knapsacks in the water about 2,000 meters (yards) from the island's airport, authorities said.

President Sebastian Pinera expressed sadness. "This is a blow to our country. In these times of anguish and uncertainty is when unity is most needed," he said.

Defense Minister Andres Allamand called it a "particularly difficult" situation, but said that for now the plane was still listed as "missing."

Authorities said popular Chilean television personality Felipe Camiroaga was flying to the island to do a program on the reconstruction of Juan Fernandez island following the magnitude-8.8 earthquake and tsunami that wiped out its main town on Feb. 27, 2010.

The 44-year-old TV presenter was one of five people from Television Nacional's program "Good Morning Everyone" who were traveling to the island.

Besides hosting the morning program, Camiroaga also hosted the popular program "Nocturnal Animal" and co-hosted the Vina del Mar music festival in 2009 and 2010.

"We are extremely upset," said TVN executive director Mauro Valdes.

Also on board was businessman Felipe Cubillos, a brother-in-law of the defense minister who had been working on post-earthquake reconstruction.

The remote Chilean archipelago, about 515 miles (830 kilometers) west of Chile's coast, is known for possibly having inspired the novel Robinson Crusoe.

The air force plane took off from the capital, Santiago, at 2 p.m. and lost contact with air control almost four hours later, according to a statement from aviation authorities.

"It's a difficult runway, but not impossible," Julio Subercaseaux, president of Chile's federal aviation authority, told state television.

Justin Bieber and his super-expensive Ferrari are both doing OK after the singer was involved in a minor fender bender in L.A. today ... this according to the LAPD.

According to police, a driver in a Honda collided with a Ferrari driven by Bieber.

Sources on the scene tell TMZ ... the Honda "tapped" Biebs so gently he didn't exchange info with the other driver.

But we're told one of Justin's peeps decided ... better safe than sorry ... and called police -- who showed up and said there wasn't enough damage to even take a report.

The good news is no one was injured. Even better news ... we're told Bieber doesn't own the Ferrari.

A photo of what appears to be a police officer having sex with a woman on the hood of a car has caused an uproar in New Mexico.

The Huffington Post could not confirm independently that the man in question is a law enforcement officer, but Albuquerque, N.M. TV station KOB 4 and the Albuquerque Journal both identify the man as a uniformed officer.

The Santa Fe Sheriff's office released pictures to KOB in response to a public records request. The photos were taken from security footage at the Santa Fe Canyon Ranch.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert Garcia told the Journal that the photos were taken by a camera set up to catch graffiti taggers or other crimes.

An email and phone call to the New Mexico State Police were not immediately returned to HuffPost.

Other uniformed policeman have been caught having sex on the job. Earlier this month, a Louisiana state public safety officer was suspended for reportedly having sex in his patrol car.

The main event of UFC 134 tonight (Aug. 27, 2011) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil featured one of the greatest, or the greatest, depending on your perspective, fighters in the history of MMA, as Anderson Silva defended his middleweight title against number one contender Yushin Okami.

This was another rematch many years in the making, as these two originally met back in Jan. 2006, with the Japanese judo player coming away with a disqualification victory after an illegal upkick by "The Spider." Up until that point, though, it was the Brazilian who was easily getting the better of the fight.

Would he do the same tonight albeit with the outcome he had originally intended?

He sure would ... and he looked damn good doing it. He danced and he ducked, shucked and he jived and just like he said he would, he came to Brazil champion and he will leave Brazil champion.

Silva came out circling, with plenty of his trademark foot movement that gives UFC President Dana White so many headaches. But he does this to figure out his opponent, as Kenny Florian made sure to remind us during the broadcast.

Okami tried his best to make it a dirty, grind it out fight. He clinched with Silva at the earliest opportunity and pushed him up against the cage, while landing uppercuts and knees. The crowd didn't like it but it's an effective strategy against the best striker on Earth.

When they separated, Silva stayed loose, slipping punches as though they were coming from a mile away. He even landed a head kick that staggered his foe. The round ended before he could attempt to finish the job.

As the second round opened, Silva got more aggressive, moving around with speed that Okami simply could not keep up with. Then he started playing Roy Jones Jr., leaving his hands low and letting Yushin punch him before answering with a shot of his own that dropped Okami.

Unreal.

This made Okami reluctant to engage and when Silva decided it was time, he came in quick and with such power that there was simply nothing his opponent could do.

Anderson Silva retains his middleweight title, for the record ninth time, finishing Yushin Okami via technical knockout in the second round.

Javaris Crittenton Murder

ATLANTA -- Police say former NBA player Javaris Crittenton has been charged with murder after a woman was shot on an Atlanta street.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos says police have secured a murder warrant for the arrest of Crittenton, who played at Georgia Tech, in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Jullian Jones on Aug. 19. Campos said Crittenton is not in custody and is wanted.

Police said Jones was walking with a group of people on the city's southwest side when she was shot.

Investigators say they don't believe the woman was the intended target. Campos said the motive appears to be retaliation for a robbery in April, in which Crittenton was a victim.

Crittenton most recently played in the NBA with the Washington Wizards and was involved in a gun altercation with Gilbert Arenas. He is on the roster of the NBDL's Dakota Wizards.

Crittenton didn't play last season because of an ankle injury. He was given a 38-game suspension by the NBA after he and Arenas acknowledged bringing guns into the locker room following a dispute stemming from a card game on a team flight.

Crittenton pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge on Jan. 25, 2010 and received probation. He wasn't re-signed by the Wizards.

The Charlotte Bobcats signed Crittenton to a non-guaranteed contract before last season but he was waived Oct. 15.

Crittenton was the 19th overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2007. He played little with Los Angeles and was sent to Memphis in the Pau Gasol deal his rookie year. He was traded to Washington in December 2008.

TRIPOLI, Libya -- Libyan rebels claimed to be in control of most of the Libyan capital on Monday after their lightning advance on Tripoli heralded the fall of Moammar Gadhafi's nearly 42-year regime. Scattered battles erupted, and the mercurial leader's whereabouts remained unknown.

The international community called on Gadhafi to step down and moved ahead with post-war planning as euphoric residents celebrated in the Green Square, the symbolic heart of the Gadhafi regime. Colleagues warned he wouldn't go easily. Two of his sons were captured late Sunday.

"The real moment of victory is when Gadhafi is captured," the head of the opposition's National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, said at a news conference in the eastern city of Benghazi.

NATO promised to maintain its air campaign until all pro-Gadhafi forces surrender or return to barracks. NATO warplanes have hit at least 40 targets in and around Tripoli in the past two days - the highest number on a single geographic location since the bombing started more than five months ago, the alliance said.

"We came out today to feel a bit of freedom," Ashraf Halaby, a 30-year-old Tripoli resident, said as he and four of his friends watched several hundred people celebrating at Green Square. "We still don't believe that this is happening."

Revelers flashed the "V" for victory sign and motorists circled the square's central median honking their horns and waving rebel flags.

The rest of the city, a metropolis of some 2 million people on the Mediterranean coast, was on edge, with most stores shuttered and large areas appeared lifeless, without even a sign of the thousands of rebels now in the city.

Signs of tension emerged between rebels and residents at a gas station in the neighborhood of Gourji, with heated arguments over who should fill up first after rebels cut in line. Rebel leaders urged people to protect public property, and no looting was reported.

The rapid rebel advance into Tripoli in an hours-long blitz showcased the evolution of the opposition fighters who first rose against the regime six months ago, swiftly capturing the eastern part of the vast, oil-rich North African nation but failing to advance westward toward Tripoli even with the help of months of NATO airstrikes.

For months, the rebels - mainly civilian volunteers who took up arms and had little military training - were judged to be big on zeal but short on organization and discipline, but their stunning success in Tripoli showed a high level of planning, coordination and discipline.

The U.S. and other nations have recognized the National Transitional Council as Libya's legitimate government, but the rebel movement consists of Islamists as well as former government insiders and Western-leaning intellectuals, raising concern about whether the factions can unite in a post-Gadhafi Libya.

Abdel-Jalil sought to allay those worries at a news conference in the rebel capital of Benghazi, saying the opposition wanted a nation built on the principles of "freedom, equality and transparency."

In London, British Prime Minister David Cameron said frozen Libyan assets would soon be released to help the country's rebels establish order, saying Gadhafi's regime was "falling apart and in full retreat."

Rebel spokesman Mohammed Abdel-Rahman, who was in Tripoli, warned of pockets of resistance and said as long as Gadhafi remains on the run the "danger is still there."

Clashes broke out early Monday at Gadhafi's longtime command center known as Bab al-Aziziya early Monday when government tanks emerged from the complex and opened fire at rebels trying to get in, according to Abdel-Rahman and a neighbor. An AP reporter at the nearby Rixos Hotel where foreign journalists stay heard gunfire and loud explosions from the direction of the complex.

Moammar al-Warfali, whose family home is next to the Gadhafi compound, said there appeared to be only a few tanks belonging to the remaining Gadhafi forces that have not fled or surrendered.

"When I climb the stairs and look at it from the roof, I see nothing at Bab al-Aziziya," he said. "NATO has demolished it all and nothing remains."

The Rixos hotel where foreign journalists are staying also remained under the control of Gadhafi forces, with two trucks loaded with anti-aircraft machine guns and pro-regime fighters and snipers posted behind trees. Rebels and Tripoli residents set up checkpoints elsewhere in the city.

Britain's Defense Secretary Liam Fox said resistance was coming mainly from foreign mercenaries, rather than Libyans still loyal to Gadhafi. "There is a certain amount of violence still occurring, we also know that a lot of the resistance from the pro-Gadhafi forces has in fact come from mercenary elements," he told BBC radio.

"It does appear that a lot of the Libyan forces themselves inside Tripoli either stayed at home or put down their arms - and that may bode well for a diminishing level of violence during the transitional period," he said.

The rebels' top diplomat in London, Mahmud Nacua, said opposition forces controlled 95 percent of Tripoli. He vowed "the fighters will turn over every stone to find" Gadhafi and make sure he faced justice.

A rebel field commander said reinforcements were arriving in Tripoli by sea from the north, south and southeast.

"Our fighters are coming from all directions and, God willing, today we will liberate the whole city," the commander, Suleiman Sifaw, told The Associated Press.

State TV broadcast bitter audio pleas by Gadhafi for Libyans to defend his regime as the rebels advanced on Sunday, although the station was off the air by Monday afternoon amid reports that the rebels had seized its main offices.

Opposition fighters captured Gadhafi's son and one-time heir apparent, Seif al-Islam, who along with his father faces charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands. Another son, Mohammed, was under house arrest.

Abdel-Jalil, the rebel chief, vowed Monday to give Gadhafi a "fair trial with all legal guarantees" when captured.

But Gadhafi's defiant audio messages raised the possibility of a last-ditch fight over the capital, home to 2 million people. Gadhafi, who was not shown, called on supporters to march in the streets of the capital and "purify it" of "the rats."

Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim also claimed the regime has "thousands and thousands of fighters" and vowed: "We will fight. We have whole cities on our sides. They are coming en masse to protect Tripoli to join the fight."

Gadhafi's former right-hand man, who defected last week to Italy, said the longtime leader would not go easily.

"I think it's impossible that he'll surrender," Abdel-Salam Jalloud said in an interview broadcast on Italian RAI state radio, adding that "He doesn't have the courage, like Hitler, to kill himself."

Jalloud, who was Gadhafi's closest aide for decades before falling out with the leader in the 1990s, fled Tripoli on Friday, according to rebels.

The startling rebel breakthrough, after a long deadlock in Libya's 6-month-old civil war, was the culmination of a closely coordinated plan by rebels, NATO and anti-Gadhafi residents inside Tripoli, rebel leaders said. Rebel fighters from the west swept over 20 miles (30 kilometers) in a matter of hours Sunday, taking town after town and overwhelming a major military base as residents poured out to cheer them. At the same time, Tripoli residents secretly armed by rebels rose up.

When rebels reached the gates of Tripoli, the special battalion entrusted by Gadhafi with guarding the capital promptly surrendered. The reason: Its commander, whose brother had been executed by Gadhafi years ago, was secretly loyal to the rebellion, a senior rebel official, Fathi al-Baja, told The Associated Press.

On Monday, rebels erected checkpoints on the western approaches to the city, handing out candy to passengers and inquiring about their destination. Cars leaving the city were subjected to more rigorous checks.

President Barack Obama said Libya is "slipping from the grasp of a tyrant" and urged Gadhafi to relinquish power to prevent more bloodshed.

"The future of Libya is now in the hands of the Libyan people," Obama said in a statement from Martha's Vineyard, where he's vacationing. He promised to work closely with rebels.

South Africa, which led failed African Union efforts to mediate between the rebels and Gadhafi, refused to offer support to the rebels on Monday, saying it wants to see a unity government put in place as a transitional authority.

The uprising against Gadhafi broke out in mid-February, inspired by successful revolts in Egypt and Tunisia, Libya's neighbors to the east and west respectively. A brutal regime crackdown quickly transformed the protests into an armed rebellion. Rebels seized Libya's east, setting up an internationally recognized transitional government there, and two pockets in the west, the port city of Misrata and the Nafusa mountain range.

Gadhafi clung to the remaining territory, and for months neither side had been able to break the other.

In early August, however, rebels launched an offensive from the Nafusa Mountains, then fought their way down to the Mediterranean coastal plain, backed by NATO airstrikes, and captured the strategic city of Zawiya.

Gadhafi is the Arab world's longest-ruling, most erratic, most grimly fascinating leader - presiding over this North African desert nation with vast oil reserves and just 6 million people.

For years, he was an international pariah blamed for the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am jumbo jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, that killed 270 people. After years of denial, Gadhafi's Libya acknowledged responsibility, agreed to pay up to $10 million to relatives of each victim, and the Libyan rule declared he would dismantle his weapons of mass destruction program. That eased him back into the international community.

Fans Brawl In Stands During 49ers-Raiders Preseason Game

Several incidents of fan-on-fan violence that occurred over the weekend's NFL preseason games have prompted the mayors of San Francisco and Oakland to take action.

During the 49ers-Raiders game alone, there was a beating in a restroom, a huge brawl in the stands and two fans were shot in the parking lot of Candlestick Park after the exhibition was over.

"The incidents ... are completely unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Fans come to our stadiums to enjoy an afternoon of football, not to be subjected to intimidation or violence," the mayors said in a joint statement. "These games are family events and the types of images we witnessed last night have no place in our arenas."

Earlier this year, San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow was beaten badly outside of Dodgers Stadium after the season opener.

The epidemic of fan violence is not limited to the Bay Area. During the Ravens-Chiefs game on Saturday, a fight broke out between Ravens fans near the concession area which left two lying on the ground in pain.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello issued a statement on fan violence, per ProFootballTalk.

“We deplore the activities of a handful of fans at last night’s game and pledge our full support to Mayors Lee and Quan and to state and local law enforcement agencies,” Aiello said. “We are carefully reviewing the events to make sure we have a full understanding of the facts. We will continue to work closely with our clubs and law enforcement agencies to support our fan conduct and stadium security initiatives.”
Of course, 2011 isn't the first time that we've seen ugly scenes like these.

Just last year, videos were recorded of Redskins fans fighting each other, Chargers and Raiders fans going at it in the parking lot and even a fight in the stands during the U.S. Open.

State TV broadcast bitter audio pleas by Gadhafi for Libyans to defend his regime as the rebels advanced on Sunday, although the station was off the air by Monday afternoon amid reports that the rebels had seized its main offices.

Opposition fighters captured Gadhafi's son and one-time heir apparent, Seif al-Islam, who along with his father faces charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands. Another son, Mohammed, was under house arrest.

Abdel-Jalil, the rebel chief, vowed Monday to give Gadhafi a "fair trial with all legal guarantees" when captured.

But Gadhafi's defiant audio messages raised the possibility of a last-ditch fight over the capital, home to 2 million people. Gadhafi, who was not shown, called on supporters to march in the streets of the capital and "purify it" of "the rats."

Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim also claimed the regime has "thousands and thousands of fighters" and vowed: "We will fight. We have whole cities on our sides. They are coming en masse to protect Tripoli to join the fight."

Gadhafi's former right-hand man, who defected last week to Italy, said the longtime leader would not go easily.

"I think it's impossible that he'll surrender," Abdel-Salam Jalloud said in an interview broadcast on Italian RAI state radio, adding that "He doesn't have the courage, like Hitler, to kill himself."

Jalloud, who was Gadhafi's closest aide for decades before falling out with the leader in the 1990s, fled Tripoli on Friday, according to rebels.

The startling rebel breakthrough, after a long deadlock in Libya's 6-month-old civil war, was the culmination of a closely coordinated plan by rebels, NATO and anti-Gadhafi residents inside Tripoli, rebel leaders said. Rebel fighters from the west swept over 20 miles (30 kilometers) in a matter of hours Sunday, taking town after town and overwhelming a major military base as residents poured out to cheer them. At the same time, Tripoli residents secretly armed by rebels rose up.

When rebels reached the gates of Tripoli, the special battalion entrusted by Gadhafi with guarding the capital promptly surrendered. The reason: Its commander, whose brother had been executed by Gadhafi years ago, was secretly loyal to the rebellion, a senior rebel official, Fathi al-Baja, told The Associated Press.

On Monday, rebels erected checkpoints on the western approaches to the city, handing out candy to passengers and inquiring about their destination. Cars leaving the city were subjected to more rigorous checks.

President Barack Obama said Libya is "slipping from the grasp of a tyrant" and urged Gadhafi to relinquish power to prevent more bloodshed.

"The future of Libya is now in the hands of the Libyan people," Obama said in a statement from Martha's Vineyard, where he's vacationing. He promised to work closely with rebels.

South Africa, which led failed African Union efforts to mediate between the rebels and Gadhafi, refused to offer support to the rebels on Monday, saying it wants to see a unity government put in place as a transitional authority.

The uprising against Gadhafi broke out in mid-February, inspired by successful revolts in Egypt and Tunisia, Libya's neighbors to the east and west respectively. A brutal regime crackdown quickly transformed the protests into an armed rebellion. Rebels seized Libya's east, setting up an internationally recognized transitional government there, and two pockets in the west, the port city of Misrata and the Nafusa mountain range.

Gadhafi clung to the remaining territory, and for months neither side had been able to break the other.

In early August, however, rebels launched an offensive from the Nafusa Mountains, then fought their way down to the Mediterranean coastal plain, backed by NATO airstrikes, and captured the strategic city of Zawiya.

Gadhafi is the Arab world's longest-ruling, most erratic, most grimly fascinating leader - presiding over this North African desert nation with vast oil reserves and just 6 million people.

For years, he was an international pariah blamed for the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am jumbo jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, that killed 270 people. After years of denial, Gadhafi's Libya acknowledged responsibility, agreed to pay up to $10 million to relatives of each victim, and the Libyan rule declared he would dismantle his weapons of mass destruction program. People and E! reported Kardashian wore an ivory gown designed by Vera Wang. Her stepfather, Bruce Jenner, walked her down the aisle in front of 440 guests, including Demi Lovato, Mario Lopez, Eva Longoria, Sugar Ray Leonard, Alan Thicke and Lindsay Lohan.

Kardashian's gown had a tulle skirt, basque waist and Chantilly lace, and was matched with a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, the media outlets reported. The bride planned to wear two other Wang dresses before the night and the party were over.

Her sisters and TV co-stars Kourtney Kardashian, 32, and Khloe Kardashian, 27, served as co-maids of honor.

Taylor Armstrong Husband Russell Armstrong Found Dead

"Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Taylor Armstrong was at her estranged husband's house when his body was discovered, TMZ has learned.

Sources close to Taylor tell us, she and Russell had been regularly communicating and were supposed to meet on Monday afternoon, but he was a no show. She became worried and began calling his friends, but none of them had heard from him.

Taylor became increasingly alarmed and began frantically texting and phoning Russell, to no avail.

On Monday evening, Taylor and a friend went to the home where Russell was staying. They found the owner of the home on the property. While Taylor watched, the owner peered through Russell's bedroom window and saw his lifeless body hanging.

As TMZ first reported, the owner called 911 and Russell was declared dead at 8:16 PM. Taylor believes Russell had been dead for hours.

We're told Taylor stayed at the house for hours after the body was found.

Anna Hazare refused to come out of Tihar Jail

New Delhi: After protests through the day over the arrest of Anna Hazare, the Government is preparing to release him from Tihar Jail later tonight, say sources. However, reports suggest Mr Hazare has refused to come out of jail, saying he wants unconditional permission to fast at Jaiprakash Narain Park. (Read: Who is Anna Hazare?)

Sources have told NDTV that the decision to release Anna Hazare was taken after Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi's intervention. Rahul Gandhi reportedly met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh this evening and discussed the Anna situation.

Government sources also add that they never wanted Mr Hazare to be sent to Tihar Jail.

Mr Hazare was brought to Tihar Jail at 3:30 pm, eight hours after he was arrested. The 74-year-old activist has not touched any food or water all day. His hunger strike against corruption has begun, say those who are in touch with him. (Forum: Do you agree with Anna Hazare's fast?)

The anti-corruption crusader was lodged in a normal cell in jail no 4. Ironically, among the more well-known residents of jail no. 4 is Suresh Kalmadi, charged with large-scale corruption in Commonwealth Games projects. To add to the irony, Mr Hazare's fellow-activist and Magsaysay award winner Arvind Kejriwal is in a jail that houses DMK leader A Raja, also in jail on charges of corruption in the 2G scam. The pressure showed when jail authorities sought to make clear that Anna Hazare and Suresh Kalmadi shared only a jail, not a ward. Director General, Prisons, Neeraj Kumar said Mr Hazare's ward was in fact some distance away from that of Mr Kalmadi. He also said that Mr Hazare had been given tight security, had been medically examined and was well.

Whether or not India agrees with Mr Hazare's methods or the new law against corruption that he is championing, there was widespread consensus that his arrest was a violation of the fundamental right to protest peacefully; that the Government has through his arrest catapulted Mr Hazare into a new league of stardom; and that the issue of corruption - rather than Mr Hazare's plan for how to tackle it - has engulfed India with a craving for correction.

Mr Hazare was greeted in a Delhi flat this morning a little after 7 by many policemen. They asked if he was planning on proceeding with his plan for a mass protest at Jai Prakash Narain Park. When he confirmed that was his agenda, he was taken into preventive custody. The government said that it had no choice but to arrest Mr Hazare for defying ordered that banned large gatherings. His arrest was not unanticipated - he had recorded a video message declaring this the second freedom struggle. "My dear countrymen, second freedom struggle has begun and now I have also been arrested. But will this movement be stopped by my arrest? No, not at all. Don't let it happen... Time has come my countrymen when there should be no place left in jails in India to accommodate any more persons," he said. (

At 3:30 pm, Mr Hazare was moved to Tihar Jail. Nearly 300 people gathered outside in a show of solidarity. The police and the Government tried to explain that Mr Hazare would have been allowed to hold his protest if he had accepted the conditions of limit his hunger strike to three days and his supporters to 5000. At India Gate, a few hundred people gathered for a candlelight vigil. In other cities across the country, crowds gathered, making the same point - that they support Mr Hazare's call for action against corruption. The strength of the crowds varied. Thousands in Bangalore and Mumbai, a few hundred in Kolkata and Hyderabad.

What Mr Hazare is fighting is the Government's draft of a new bill to counter corruption among politicians and bureaucrats. Mr Hazare wants the Prime Minister and senior judges to be covered by the Lokpal Bill. He also believes that the Government has too hefty a vote inter selection of the Lokpal or ombudsman committee. Mr Hazare and his supporters have their own version of the Lokpal bill - which has also been criticized for imagining an ombudsman panel with totalitarian powers.

For now, though, it is the arrest of Mr Hazare that the Opposition has leapt upon. In Parliament, parties united to slam the government. The BJP says the Prime Minister must make a statement on the Gandhian's arrest. (Read) Even old friends of the UPA government like Mulayam Singh Yadav placed their disagreement on record. More worryingly for the government, allies like the DMK chose to distance themselves.

"Both sides could have avoided the adamance," said DMK chief M Karunanidhi.

Defiance of police orders unacceptable: Chidambaram

Under attack from all quarters, the government has justified the police action on Anna. Home Minister P Chidambaram, not allowed to make a statement in Parliament by a belligerent Opposition, called Anna Hazare's detention a "painful duty," carried out because of "breach of peace." He was at pains to say that the government was not against peaceful protest, but said Team Anna was detained because it had refused to comply with six of the police's 22 conditions and made clear that it would defy orders not to hold their protest fast.

"It is unacceptable to defy police conditions...I inform you with regret that this action has been taken." Mr Chidambaram said, adding that Anna and six other people had been detained under Section 151 of the CrPC and taken to the police mess at Alipur road. He said a little over a 1000 people had been detained elsewhere in Delhi and most of them were at the Chhatrasal Stadium in north Delhi.

Parliament opened to chaos on Tuesday. The BJP gave a notice for suspension of Question Hour to discuss the Anna Hazare issue. The government said it was ready for a discussion after Question Hour, at noon. There was no meeting ground - when Mr Chidambaram offered to make a statement in Parliament, the Opposition said it will settle for nothing less than a statement from the Prime Minister. The two Houses were repeatedly adjourned, finally for the day.

Jani Lane -- former lead singer of the rock band Warrant -- was found dead at a hotel in L.A. Thursday evening ... TMZ has learned.

Lane's body was discovered at the Comfort Inn hotel in Woodland Hills, CA. So far, no official cause of death has been released.
Lane famously penned the band's biggest hit "Cherry Pie" back in 1989 ... before eventually leaving the band to pursue a solo career.

Lane had a history of alcohol-related issues -- he was ordered to serve 120 days in jail after he was arrested for DUI in 2010 ... his second DUI in two years.

London Riots Rage On For Third Day

It’s been burning for three days now. 215 people have been arrested so far, but the riots are spreading, not shrinking.

It started as a peaceful protest of a police shooting, but that’s not how it’ll end:

“It’s been building up for years. All it needed was a spark,” said E. Nan, a young man in a baseball cap surrounded by other youths in Hackney in east London. “We ain’t got no jobs, no money … We heard that other people were getting things for free, so why not us?”…

By Monday, the violence had spread to parts of the south of the city, including Clapham Junction, one of London’s busiest railway junctions, Woolwich in the capital’s southeast and the Ealing area of west London.

Attackers also smashed shops and looted property in the city of Birmingham in central England, police said, in the first sign of the riots spreading beyond the capital…

“It’s very sad to see … But kids have got no work, no future and the cuts have made it worse. These kids are from another generation to us and they just don’t care,” said Anthony Burns, 39, an electrician from Hackney. “You watch. It’s only just begun.”

It seems like just yesterday that young Brits were rampaging through the streets of London in response to budget cuts and screaming “off with their heads” at Prince Charles and his wife. A reporter from Sky News was on the scene in Clapham Junction, where the third video below was taken, and claims he can’t find any police there. The force is so overwhelmed, apparently, that they simply have no presence in some of the affected areas. How long, I wonder, before we see British troops in the streets.

The BBC’s, in particular, really does make it sound as though the whole city is being sacked. Francesco Quinn, a successful actor and son of the late screen legend Anthony Quinn, died Friday night at the age of 48 ... according to several reports.

A neighbor told the Malibu Patch that Quinn was running near his home with his son Max when he collapsed. Paramedics arrived quickly, according to the paper, but Quinn was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Quinn appeared in the movie "Platoon" as well as TV shows such as "The Young and the Restless," "The Shield" and "24."

Riot In Tottenham After Protest At Mark Duggan's Killing By Police

PRESS ASSOCIATION -- Eight police officers are being treated in hospital following riots which broke out two days after a man was shot dead by police.

Scotland Yard said at least one of the officers had suffered head injuries after protesters clashed with police in Tottenham, north London.

Trouble flared after members of the community took to the streets to demand "justice", after Mark Duggan, 29, was shot dead by police on Thursday.

The riots saw buildings and vehicles set alight, including two patrol cars, a police van and a double-decker bus, and shops looted as police in riot gear arrived on the scene.

Hundreds of people gathered in the street, including mounted police, as smoke poured into the air from the lighted bus. Fire engines descended on the area and thunderflashes were thrown at police on horseback.

After sections of Tottenham High Road were cleared of protesters, "pockets of trouble" continued to flare in nearby areas, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

Two vans were reported to have been set ablaze in nearby Rheola Close, and Sky News said that its reporter and cameraman had to withdraw from the area over safety fears.

There were also reports of looting in Tottenham Hale Retail Park.

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance Service said paramedics had treated 10 people, and nine were taken to hospital.

The violence erupted after around 120 people marched from the local Broadwater Farm area to Tottenham police station, forcing officers to close the High Road and put traffic diversions in place.

After night fell, two police cars parked about 200 yards from the police station were set upon. Later a bus was set on fire at the junction of the High Road and Brook Street, which belched black smoke out into the air and was clearly going to be completely burnt out.

Rioters were also kicking in windows down the High Road and hundreds of people were gathered in the street including mounted police as smoke poured into the air.

Police formed lines outside Tottenham Police Station and, armed with riot shields, marched down the road to clear the immediate area of protesters. At one point a protester ran in from a side road and hurled a petrol bomb at the officers.

A local woman, who declined to give her name, said: "There's a theory going on that the man who was shot had dropped his gun, but they still shot him. I'm hearing that most of the shops in the High Road are being burgled and robbed."

A building along the High Road, near the junction with Stoneleigh Road, was well alight, presumably having been set on fire by the rioters. Police advanced along the road with their riot shields, driving the rioters back.

This soccer screw-up involves a bit of trickery, however. During a J.League (Japan's top division) match between Kashima Antlers and Cerezo Osaka, Osaka goalkeeper Jin-Hyeon Kim makes a decent save off a free kick. He waits for the action to clear, and then places the ball on the ground to distribute it to one of his teammates.

The only problem is he didn't know Antlers forward Yuzo Tashiro was lurking behind him, waiting to poach the ball.

You can imagine what happens next. And you can imagine how dejected Kim was left feeling after the major gaffe.

Antlers tied the match 1-1 with the sneaky play, and then went on to win the match, 3-1. Poor Kim.

Having grown tired of a series of complaints over illegally parked cars, the mayor of Lithuania's capital opted to send his city's abundance of disrespectful drivers a very public, outrageous message.

To produce this newly-released clip, Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas commissioned an armored personal carrier and used it to crush a luxurious blue mercedes pretentiously parked on a biker's lane. "What should this city do about drivers who think they are above the law," Zuokas says in the video. "It seems a tank is the best solution."

According to Metro.co.uk, the mayor's stunt was set up by members of his office, who recently received over 100 complaints of parking woes. "I want to point out that if you have a car and more money it doesn't mean that you can park it everywhere. Zuokas was quoted by the Irish Times as saying. "Recently there's been an increase in this type of parking violations, and it shows a lack of respect for others."

Leanne Suter, a reporter for KABC-TV 7 in Los Angeles, was shot in the hand by a pellet from a BB gun on Saturday evening while giving a live news report.

Suter and her photographer came under fire during the 6 p.m. newscast, although Suter was the only one hit, according to ABC News. She was treated at a nearby hospital and released without serious injury.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana -- Flight 523 from New York had just touched down and passengers were applauding the pilot's landing in the South American country Saturday when something suddenly went wrong.

The Boeing 737-800 slid off the end of a rainy runway, crashed through a chain-link fence and broke in half just short of a deep ravine. Yet all 163 people on board survived.

Officials were starting to probe the cause of the crash even as they marveled at the lack of fatalities.

"We must be the luckiest country and luckiest set of people in the world to escape so lightly," said Health Minister Leslie Ramsammy, who said more than 30 people were taken to the hospital. Only three of those had to be admitted for a broken leg, bumps, cuts and bruises.

The Caribbean Airlines plane had left John F. Kennedy International Airport Friday evening and made a stop in Trinidad before landing in Guyana. The airline said it was carrying 157 passengers and six crew members.

Geeta Ramsingh, 41, of Philadelphia, recalled how applause at the arrival quickly "turned to screams."

"The plane sped up as if attempting to take off again. It is then that I smelled gas in the cabin and people started to shout and holler," she said.

When the plane crumpled to a stop, Ramsingh said she hopped onto the wing and then onto the dirt road outside the runway fence.

"A fellow who was trying to escape as well mistakenly jumped on my back and that is why my knees are bruised," she said. "So I am in pain, but very thankful to be alive."
Nobody had yet showed up to rescue her, "but a taxi driver appeared from nowhere and charged me $20 to take me to the terminal. I had to pay, but in times of emergencies, you don't charge people for a ride," she said, sitting on a chair in the arrival area surrounded by relatives. She was returning to her native country for only the second time in 30 years.

Adis Cambridge, 42, of Guyana, said she felt the thump of a hard landing but did not think much of it until seconds later.

"I realized that everything was on top of me, people and bags. I was the second to last person to get off that plane in the dark," she said, surrounded by her two young children who had come to the airport to meet her after a brief holiday in the U.S.

"I hit my head on the roof. It was so scary," she said, and described jumping from the wing to the dirt road below as crews with flashlights and beams from fire engines searched for passengers.

"I thought I would have died. I just started to cry," she said.

The plane came to rest off the end of the 7,400-foot (2,200-meter) runway at Cheddi Jagan International. Authorities struggled at first to remove passengers without adequate field lights and other emergency equipment.

The plane stopped a little short of a 200-foot (60-meter) ravine that could have resulted in dozens of fatalities, said President Bharrat Jagdeo.

"We are very, very grateful that more people were not injured," said Jagdeo, who came to the crash site before dawn.

George Nicholas, Caribbean Airlines chairman, told reporters that officials with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board are scheduled to arrive Sunday in Guyana to take over the investigation. He said investigators from Guyana and Trinidad, the airline's base, will help.

He said the airline is arranging for counselors to meet with passengers.

Authorities temporarily closed the Guyana airport, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded and delaying dozens of flights. The main terminal reopened late Saturday morning to only a couple of small planes, including a LIAT airline bound for Barbados, said Orin Walton, a local representative for the Antigua-based carrier.

The crash of Flight 523 is the worst in recent history in Guyana, and only one of the few serious incidents involving the Trinidad-based airline. It is the single largest carrier in the region, operating at least five daily flights.

Former New York Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu was reportedly found dead on Wednesday at his home in California, Japanese site asahi.com reports.

Los Angeles Country Coroner Ed Winter confirmed Irabu's death.

Suicide is suspected.

Hardball Talk was the first to post the report in English.

Irabu joined the Yankees in 1997 and also played for the Texas Rangers and Montreal Expos.

He finished his career after six years with a 34-35 record and 5.15 ERA.

UPDATE: According to the Associated Press, the 42-year-old died of an apparent suicide. Other details have not been released.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- In a blunt challenge to President Barack Obama, House Republicans drafted legislation Monday to avert a potentially devastating Aug. 2 government default – but along lines the White House has already dismissed. U.S. and world financial markets shrugged off the uncertainty.

"This is a city where compromise is becoming a dirty word," Obama lamented as congressional leaders groped for a way out of a looming crisis.

In stinging remarks a short while later on the Senate floor, the Republican leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, urged the president to reconsider his position rather "than veto the country into default."

According to a GOP aide familiar with the emerging House bill, it would provide for an immediate $1 trillion increase in the government's $14.3 trillion debt limit in exchange for $1.2 trillion in cuts in federal spending.

The measure also envisions Congress approving a second round of spending cuts of $1.8 trillion or more in 2012, passage of which would trigger an additional $1.6 trillion in increased borrowing authority.

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer called the proposal "not a serious attempt to avert default because it has no chance of passing the Senate."

While the bill marked a retreat from legislation that conservatives muscled through the House last week, the two-step approach runs afoul of Obama's insistence that lawmakers solve the current crisis in a way that avoids a politically charged rerun next year in the middle of the 2012 election campaign.

Troubled, Grammy-winning singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her North London home, Sky News is reporting. The Daily Mail reports that police have confirmed the passing.

In a statement, the London Metropolitan Police said, "Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased. On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."

A suspected drug overdose took the life of the singer, Nick Buckley of the Sunday Mirror tweeted.

She's battled drug addiction for years, having most recently checked back into rehabilitation in May.

Winehouse entered treatment in late 2007 for drug problems, including admitted heroin use.

Earlier in the day, Tim Gatt of Sky News tweeted a statement from her manager saying that she was canceling upcoming performances, writing, "Amy Winehouse is withdrawing from all scheduled performances. Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best and she will be given as long as it takes for this to happen."

Former NBA star Steve Francis is being accused of sexual assaulting a woman in Texas last year ... TMZ has learned.

According to the police report, obtained by TMZ, Francis allegedly "groped" a 20-year-old woman through her clothing in May 2010 ... and the woman immediately went to the cops to file a complaint.

The alleged victim tells TMZ ... she is a singer who was signed to Steve's record label and on the day of the alleged incident, she had met Steve at an office to discuss her contract.

The woman, Shauna Simien, tells us the "groping" while the two were talking outside, when Francis reached down and grabbed her between the legs.

Simien claims she screamed for him to stop -- and that's when a few of her friends, whom she brought along for protection, rushed over to break things up.

Despite the fact Simien filed her police report more than a YEAR ago, law enforcement sources tell TMZ the case is still open and no charges have been filed. Simien says she is frustrated the case has not progressed and is considering a lawsuit against the District Attorney's office.

Baba Ramdev Arrested

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev was arrested Sunday morning by the New Delhi police from the stage when he was sleeping with his followers and sent to dehradun from Palam Airport, Delhi. Baba Ramdev landed Joligrant Airport of Dehradun by Special Plane by Govt. Delhi Police served an externment order on Baba Ramdev and Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which prevents unlawful assembly of five or more persons, was imposed. Police sources say the order was issued after Baba Ramdev used the Ramlila Ground for staging a hunger strike against corruption instead of a yoga camp. Sources have told News 24 that Baba Ramdev was detained and sent to Haridwar, but Home Secretary GK Pillai says the yoga icon voluntarily left Delhi. Sources say that Ramdev has sought the intervention of the Chief Justice of India. PTI reports also suggest that at least 30 people were injured in the police action in Ramlila Grounds.
Eyewitness accounts suggest Baba Ramdev was sleeping on the stage when the police reached; they woke him up to tell him that they are here to escort him out of the area. But Baba Ramdev jumped off the stage and went amidst his supporters. When he again reached the dais, cops tried to zero in, and that is when all hell broke loose. Supporters first formed a ring around Baba Ramdev to prevent him from being arrested, and then started throwing stones at the policemen. Some of the protesters were injured in the incident. Torn banners, mattresses and broken furniture lay all over the site. Parts of the stage also caught a minor fire that broke out during the melee. The cops fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. And within minutes, Ramlila Ground, the crowded epicenter of Baba Ramdev`s protest against corruption where thousands had gathered to fast along with the yoga icon, wore a deserted look.

Gil Scott-Heron Dies

Gil Scott-Heron passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City on Friday. The pioneering poet, musician, and activist enjoyed a string of thought-provoking hits throughout the 1970s and was nicknamed the “Godfather of Hip-Hop” thanks to his powerful lyrics on tunes like “The Bottle,” “Angel Dust,” and the spoken word piece “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.”

Scott-Heron struggled publicly with substance abuse in the 2000s, and spent the early part of the decade in and out of jail on drug possession charges. He began performing again after his release in 2007, and in 2010 released a new album, I’m New Here.

Scott-Heron was 62. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

Earlier this week I took a look at the 10 toughest opponents of Manny Pacquiao's career and will admit that it was much harder to put together a list of 10 tough fights he had. Shane Mosley has had a hall-of-fame career and has always fought the best fighters out there.

That makes this list a little easier to put together because he has always been facing high profile fighters. Pacquiao is on a great run but at the start of his career he was a little man in Asia and they don't always fight the best guys out there.

Lindsay Lohan Scarfs It Up in Court

Earlier Friday (April 22), Lindsay Lohan received the good news that her felony grand theft charge had been reduced to a misdemeanor, which brought the threat of jail time from a three-year sentence to a possible one-year stint. However, even with that good news, Lohan was still found to be in violation of her probation, for which Judge Stephanie Sautner has just sentenced Lohan to 120 days in county jail.

According to TMZ, Lohan is headed to the Lynwood Correctional Facility, where she will be processed and eligible to post bail. Lohan lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley will appeal the sentence. The actress is due back in court May 11 for a pretrial hearing related to the misdemeanor charge.

The troubled actress was also ordered to complete 480 hours of community service; 360 of those hours must be performed at the Downtown Women's Center, and the remaining 120 hours will be served at the L.A. County morgue. Speaking to Lohan's alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace back in January, Sautner explained that the actress should have notified the store owners instead of waiting several weeks to return the necklace when she found out the cops were about to raid her house.

Late last month, Lohan turned down a plea deal offered by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office after being told by Judge Keith Schwartz that had she accepted the DA's deal — reportedly six months of jail time — she would have been found in violation of her probation and could serve more time.

Lohan allegedly lifted a $2,500 necklace from a Venice, California, jewelry store on January 22. The owner reported the theft to the Los Angeles Police Department, which later investigated the accusation and presented evidence to the District Attorney's office.

Jason Ellis has just about done it all-- from pro skateboarding to hosting a daily radio show on Sirius XM radio to pro fighting, the ever-ambitious Ellis will now be hosting "Ellismania" on FUEL TV. What do viewers have to look forward to-- well the show is described as "fighting at its dumbest" with comedy thrown into the fights.
FUEL TV's VP of Production and Development, Scott Paridon, said, "I have never produced, or even seen, a show like this before." That kind of statement coming from an executive at an action packed station like FUEL TV certainly makes the debut of Ellismania much anticipated.

While Jason Ellis described the fights as being good hearted and between people who want to fight for the fun of it, there are twists and turns thrown in, which vary from fight to fight. For example, in one fight participants wore blindfolds and electric shock collars which were controlled by audience members.

Girls won't be left out, watch out for Angel Jones from E!'s "Holly's World" to get in the ring and kick some butt this season.

Neon Tommy caught up with the man himself, Jason Ellis, at the Fortune Gym in Hollywood where he gave us a preview of what to expect as well as some fighting tips that could help land fans on the show for an opportunity to fight.

Jesse Ventura: I’d consider being Ron Paul’s VP

Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura announced today that he would consider becoming Ron Paul’s running mate — but only if the congressman runs for president on the Libertarian ticket.

The colorful political figure, who led Iowa’s neighbor to the north from 1999 to 2003, made the proclamation during an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“If Ron Paul runs as an independent, I will give great consideration to being his running mate,” Ventura said on-air, noting that his new book, “63 Documents the Government Doesn’t Want You to Read,” is dedicated to the Texas legislator.

Paul won the Libertarian Party’s nomination for the 1988 presidential race, and vied for the Republican nomination in 2008. He has paid visits to Iowa and New Hampshire in the past month, but has yet to announce whether he plans to enter the 2012 race.

There’s no indication that Paul has spoke to Ventura, a former professional wrestler, about his presidential aspirations. During the ABC interview, “The Body” offered his views on two other potential Republican presidential candidates from his home state — Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty, who replaced Ventura as the state’s governor and held the post through Jan. 3.

Ventura said he has no use for candidates who tow a party line.

“I will not be a Democrat or a Republican,” he said. “They are the problem, not the solution.”

LOS ANGELES -- Comedian Whoopi Goldberg admitted to smoking weed before the 1991 Academy Awards ceremony and said she was completely stoned as she delivered her acceptance speech for winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Ghost."

"Smoking cigarettes and pot every now and then are my habits. And I thought, 'I've got to relax.' So I smoked a joint, my home grown" to get calm before the glamorous Hollywood gathering, she explained in footage obtained by TMZ Thursday.
She then described her shock when she was announced the winner of the prestigious prize and remembers trying hard to focus to just get to the stage.
"When he (presenter actor Denzel Washington) said my name and I popped up, I thought, 'Oh f*ck'...okay, up the stairs ... around to the podium … there's millions of people, get the statue, pick up the statue."
Goldberg's admission came out during a voice-over recording session for the 1992 film, "The Pagemaster." The celebrity website just obtained the footage and released it Thursday.
Though Goldberg appears calm and composed in footage of her Oscar speech, her mom was on to her and called her out on being stoned.
"My mother called me and she said, 'You smoked didn't you?'" the current co-host of "The View" remembered.
"I know you're not supposed to admit that you smoked pot … but just because I do it doesn't mean you should," she added.

During the interview, Roberts jumped right into a number of questions about Brown's 2009 arrest for the savage beating of his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. She mentioned that the restraining order that resulted from the incident had recently been relaxed, to which Brown responded: "I mean, it's not really a big deal to me now, as far as that situation, and I think today's the album day, that's what I'm focused on."

When asked what the acronym in the album name stands for, Brown said, "Forgiving all my enemies, and definitely, fans are my everything. That meaning, being able to go through everything I went through and show my fans that I love them."

That opened another opportunity for Roberts to try to bring the beating up, which Brown again preempted by very pointedly emphasizing his album. As the interview ended, Brown emphasized that he couldn't care less what others thought.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 26th annual induction ceremony tomorrow night at the Waldorf is bound to have at least one indisputably great moment when Darlene Love finally gets her due, having first set the rock ‘n’ roll world on fire in 1962 as the voice of The Crystals on the Phil Spector-produced chart-topper “He’s A Rebel.” Neil Diamond, long ignored but equally deserving for his 1960s Brill Building songwriting and early hits, rectifies another glaring omission. I’ll leave others to sing the praises of Alice Cooper, Tom Waits and Dr. John–who are certainly credible.
This still leaves at least a score of music heroes I’d induct if given carte blanche, starting with Paul Anka, far and away the most important of the teen idols that made up much of early rock ‘n’ roll, and Lesley Gore, whose early ’60s Quincy Jones-produced classics include “It’s My Party” and the proto-feminist anthem “You Don’t Own Me.”

That surf music royalty Jan & Dean have been denied is, as they say, a travesty. I’d say the same about Lou Christie, one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most distinctive vocalists and songwriters. British Invasion group The Zombies have likewise been overlooked, despite its unique creativity.

The Turtles, Paul Revere & Raiders, Tommy James and Mitch Ryder all had landmark hits in the 1960s–lots of them–and merit RockHall recognition. Nancy Sinatra was a true female icon of the period, and has a score more hits than “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’.” Laura Nyro didn’t have any major hits of her own, but wrote key ones for the varied likes of Blood, Sweat & Tears, Three Dog Night, the 5th Dimension and Barbra Streisand–and her albums remain hugely influential.

The missing Roc kHall travesty of the 1970s is the New York Dolls, who helped set the stage for punk rock. Like ‘em or not, Kiss did in fact “rock and roll all nite,” and Grand Funk Railroad was the ultimate arena/stadium rock act. And Joan Jett should go in, with or without her pioneering 1970s girl rock group The Runaways.

This website would also cite Chicago, Sonny and Cher, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, Chubby Checker and Mary Wells–and could easily make a strong case for all of them.

And let’s not forget one special man who should have gone in long ago as a Non-Performer: Ed Sullivan. Ed gave so many Rock and Roll Hall of Famers of all subgenres primetime national network TV exposure–for which all rock ‘n’ roll fans are forever indebted.

PS I hope when Neil Diamond makes his speech he mentions all the artists who’ve been ignored. He’s been on the ballot for years. It’s only been with a lot of outside pressure that he finally made it. Believe me, he was never Wenner’s first choice.

Alexandra Wallace, UCLA Student, Films Racist Tirade

UCLA's self-identified students Asian students in Alexandra Wallace and 3-minute-long tirade on YouTube videos posted show her to have gained national notoriety.

In the three-minute clip, a blonde girl, named on the internet as Alexandra Wallace, complains about Asian students using their cellphones in the library - and speculates they're 'going through their whole families, just checking on everybody from the tsunami thing'.

She concludes the video by saying that "even if you're not Asian you really shouldn't be on your cell phone in the library." How diplomatic.

The Daily Bruin reports that university spokesman Phil Hampton called the video repugnant, and added that the student is inquiring into whether Wallace is enrolled as a student.

Remember, we've been through this all before, i.e. the Womack family meeting two women with the assumption that one of them will be Brad's fiancée by the end of the week (or, in our case, the end of two hours).

This time, however, the entire peanut gallery got the result they've been waiting for—a proposal.

After the elaborate mating game played out for the cameras over the last few months, did Brad kneel down before Chantal O'Brien or Emily Maynard?
Emily Womack has a nice ring to it, we suppose.

The pretty blond single mom from North Carolina was the recipient of a rather stunning Neil Lane engagement ring on tonight's Bachelor finale.

"You're so much more to me than a leap of faith. You're the one, Em," Brad told her, finally declaring, "I love you" for all the world to hear. "You're my once in a lifetime."

"I'm just really, really happy," she said, blinking back tears.

Of course, this Kodak moment came after the other one...

"You're an amazing person. Emily's very lucky. It just sucks because I felt so strongly," Chantal said, tears streaming down her face, after she ended up being the first woman out of the limo, and therefore the one getting the heave-ho.

Brad's family was impressed with Chantal's vibrancy and willingness to marry the wayward son on the spot, and initially they were concerned about Emily being a single mom and whether Brad was prepared to be a dad.

Chantal said she felt that Brad was "The Guy" when she first saw (and, er, slapped) him upon their first meeting.

But Emily's story about losing her fiancé in a plane crash brought Brad's entire family to its knees, and ultimately it was her vulnerability, her maturity and the "tough road" she'd traveled that had them edging into her court.

"My favorite thing that Emily said to me today was that [Brad] was her angel," said his mom, Pam, choking up with emotion. "I think she's had a very difficult time...so I want this to be very good for her."

"Chantal wouldn't relate to our world because, before you're a mom, you don't get it," said little brother Wes' wife, Prima. Added Chad's wife: "Chantal is the girl we would call and be like, 'We're going out for wine and sushi,' and we'd have a great, fun time."

OK, so some ladies need a third for Mommy and Me.

When they had their final date before the popping of the question, however, Emily grilled Brad (rightfully so, though it's annoying to watch on TV) about whether he was really "in it" with regard to her daughter, Ricki, reminding him for the umpteenth time that it's "not always fun."

"I don't think you're ready," Brad said, very obviously trying not to raise his voice (if such a thing is possible for Mr. Monotone) as he tried to convince Emily that he meant what he said about being committed to raising her kid.

"I really just messed it up big-time," Emily said in retrospect. "Every time something like this happens, my head absolutely sabotages my heart...and I screwed myself."

"I'm completely defeated," Brad added. "This particular date is making me question everything."

But obviously, that didn't matter, as Brad—in tried-and-true Bachelor fashion—picked the woman he struggled the most to win over. (Or they pick the most controversial one, but it was Jake Pavelka's turn to do that last season.)

"There's no question in my mind that Brad is the right person for me," Emily eventually admitted.

We wish them both the best, whether that "best" comes for them as a couple or not.

Japan Volcano Eruption 2011

The Japanese Volcano Shinmoedake on the Island of Kyushu Erupted on Sunday March 13

It is unclear at this point if the eruption of the Japan volcano is linked to the massive earthquake in Japan a few days ago, but at this point it certainly looks like that could be the case.

The Shinmoedake volcano started spewing ash and rocks into the sky, and the explosion from the eruption could be heard miles away.

It is located about 950 miles from the epicentre of the earthquake, and has lain dormant for a few weeks. Officials are not saying if it is related to the earthquake at this point, as eruptions are common in Japan's 'ring of fire'.

However, this is another blow to a country that is already struggling to recover from the worst earthquake in its history.

Hundreds of people have fled the area, as it is feared more volcanic activity could be coming.

Rikki Anderson aka Tericka Dye: Teacher fired for porn star past

Missouri school teacher Tericka Dye may have put her porn-star days behind her, but years later it's still coming back to haunt her.

Dye is also known as Tara Meyers. Though she used the professional pseudonym Rikki Anderson during her adult industry days, students were still able to dig up tapes of her X-rated past, leading her to resign from her job as a teacher.

This isn't the first time she's struggled with her past. In 2006, the science teacher and volleyball coach was placed on suspension without contract renewal at another school. She has passed background and reference checks, but since appearing in films -- be them adult or otherwise -- is not illegal, they weren't flagged.

Today, Dye has 4 children and is clearly trying to move on with her life.

When we were in high school, the most scandalous teacher shenanigans that we were made privy to was a DUI in the history department, but we can imagine the distraction teenagers might suffer from upon seeing their teacher getting it on on tape.

Dye's early career choices may have been morally questionable, but since she hasn't broken any laws does she really not deserve a second chance? We can certainly understand a concern for students' distraction, but is that enough to keep her out of a job?

There is no denying that Catholics are a driving force in the US but how many of us really know rules of fasting during Ash Wednesday? Find out right here.

According to www.americancatholic.org these are the requirements for catholics on this holy day:
'Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening, depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal.

Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat.

Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consomme, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are not forbidden. So it is permissible to use margarine and lard. Even bacon drippings which contain little bits of meat may be poured over lettuce as seasoning.' - From americancatholic.org

Mike Starr Dead at 44

Mike Starr, the former bassist for Alice in Chains has died, according to police.
Police have confirmed that they checked a residence at 1:42 p.m. at 1986 South Richards Street in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, where they discovered Starr's body.
He was 44 years old. The cause of death was not immediately known.
Starr was arrested for illegal prescription drug possession in Salt Lake City in February.

Starr was the original bassist for Alice in Chains a rock band that made its mark on the "grunge" scene with roots in the Seattle area. He left the group in 1993. Another original band member Layne Staley, died from a cocaine and heroin overdose in 2002.
Starr appeared in 2010 on the VH1 cable reality show "Celebrity Rehab" after suffering from a heroin addiction. [ABC 4]

UPDATE 10:40 PM: Added below is the video of tonight's Saturday Night Live cold open, featuring cast member Bill Hader as Charlie Sheen hosting his own talk show Duh! Winning! Ironically, the skit aired on the East Coast minutes after the end of the premiere episode of Sheen's new internet show Sheen's-Korner. Duh! Winning! featured guests John Galliano, Muammar Gaddafi and host Miley Cyrus as Lindsay Lohan.

UPDATE 8:40PM: Word from the East Coast is that Saturday Night Live opened tonight's broadcast with a skit about Sheen that features host Miley Cyrus as Lindsay Lohan poking fun at the Two and a Half Men star and Tiger Woods. I'll post the video as soon as it's available.

PREVIOUS: A new Charlie Sheen show is now a reality but not on TV. The Two and a Half Men star today launched a Web show, Sheen's-Korner, streaming live on UStream at 7 PM PT. It features Sheen riffing on various subjects joined by a sidekick and one of his "goddesses." Forty minutes in, the show is still going with no end in sight, with viewership fluctuating around the 100,000 mark. It is a letdown after some pretty great interviews over the past 10 days, proving that Sheen is funnier in small dozes and produces sharper zingers when answering questions. (Or maybe the Charlie Sheen drug he says he is on is simply wearing off?) The broadcast was labeled as "premiere episode of Sheen's-Korner" with no schedule provided for future episodes. (It's the same title Sheen's nonexistent HBO show was supposed to have.) The show's slogan? "You're either in Sheen's-Korner or you're with the trolls."

Wes Leonard Fennville tops Bridgeman (Video)

Wes Leonard, who hit an overtime layup to win Thursday night’s game against Bridgman, told the Kalamazoo Gazette last week that he’d been battling the flu.
“Sickness got to us a little bit,” Leonard told the Gazette after a win over Bangor.
Wes Leonard, who died at Holland Hospital, was the star player on a team that coach Ryan Klinger told the Press last month “have a special bond between them.”

Justin Bieber celebrated his 17th birthday Wednesday night with his girlfriend, Selena Gomez. The couple was then swarmed by paparazzi while leaving a romantic dinner at Maggiano’s. Bieber was angered and gave the paparazzi the finger after getting in the car. He regrets his actions and took to his Twitter to express his feelings about the incident.

According to Entertainmentwise, after Bieber realized that flipping off the cameras was a mistake, he tweeted, "Had a great bday and at the end of the night we got surrounded by paps and i reacted in a way i know better. im sorry."

The singer later added, "It's not always easy but i know better than to react in anger. Life has it's ups and downs but u guys r always there 4 me. i will make my mistakes but i promise 2 continue 2 grow with u and try 2 do."

Charlie Sheen‘s Today Show interview segments have spurred a lot of controversy as well as some concern for the mental well-being of the actor, who said he is not using drugs, although his demeanor suggests otherwise. Need an example? When the Today Show‘s Andrea Canning asked whether he was using drugs, the actor responded that he was riding a certain high.
“I am on a drug – it’s called Charlie Sheen,” he said. “It’s not available, because if you try it once, you will die; your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body.”

The words of a sober man? You decide. Sheen also explained in the Today Show interview that he was tired of being kicked around, and was thus suing CBS for breach of contract.
“People misinterpret my passion for anger…[CBS is] on a battlefield and they let their emotions and their ego…basically, they strapped on their diapers, and so they’re in breach.”
When asked if he would sue, Sheen responded, “Wouldn’t you? I don’t have a job, I got a whole family to support.”
Sheen said that he would be suing for “tons,” explaining, “I’m here to collect.”
