BOSTON, MA- The winner of the 114th Boston Marathon is Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot of Kenya. On Monday, Cheruiyot won the coveted race amid a broken record or two along the way. Twenty year old, Cheruiyot finish with a winning time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, 52 seconds. At only 20 years of age, made his debut at in 2008 at a Frankfurt event taking the event by surprise.
The Boston Marathon is Cheruiyot's second event after attempting to defend his title unsuccessfully in Frankfurt last autumn. First time Cheruiyot wins the $150,000 first prize and a bonus amount of $25,000 for setting the 2010 course record. In second place and at 91 seconds behind Cheruiyot was Ethiopian Tekeste Kebede followed by the defending champion Deriba Merga in third place. In fourth and fifth places are Americans Ryan Hall and Meb Keflezighi.Another record of sorts was set when the two American finished in the top five. That had not occurred since 2006. However, according to history books the Marathon still waits an American winner as the last time an American won the Boston Maratho was back in the 20th century. Greg Meyer won the prestigious men's Marathan in 1983.
On the woman's side Teyba Erkesso of Ethiopia won the women's race with an estimated time of 2:26:11. Following Erkesso was Russia's Tatyana Pushkareva with just 3 seconds between them making it the third-closest women's finish in sporting event’s history. The defending champion Salina Kosgei finished in third place. CONGRATS!
