Charlie sheen interview today show

Charlie Sheen‘s Today Show interview segments have spurred a lot of controversy as well as some concern for the mental well-being of the actor, who said he is not using drugs, although his demeanor suggests otherwise. Need an example? When the Today Show‘s Andrea Canning asked whether he was using drugs, the actor responded that he was riding a certain high.
“I am on a drug – it’s called Charlie Sheen,” he said. “It’s not available, because if you try it once, you will die; your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body.”

The words of a sober man? You decide. Sheen also explained in the Today Show interview that he was tired of being kicked around, and was thus suing CBS for breach of contract.
“People misinterpret my passion for anger…[CBS is] on a battlefield and they let their emotions and their ego…basically, they strapped on their diapers, and so they’re in breach.”
When asked if he would sue, Sheen responded, “Wouldn’t you? I don’t have a job, I got a whole family to support.”
Sheen said that he would be suing for “tons,” explaining, “I’m here to collect.”
Check out the rest of the highlights from Charlie Sheen in the video interview below. While Two and a Half Men is off the air, you can watch the show online right here.

UFC 127 : BJ Penn vs Jon Fitch

Tonight (Feb. 26), live at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia, B.J. Penn will take on Jon Fitch in the main event for UFC 127: "Penn vs Fitch."

And while a championship is not up for grabs, company President Dana White has made it clear the winner of tonight's bout will earn himself a shot at the coveted welterweight title.

Penn is attempting to make another run at the welterweight strap he once held all the way back in Jan. 2004 when he obliterated the original one-man wrecking crew, Matt Hughes.

Fitch, meanwhile, will look to achieve his sixth consecutive victory and continue his run of dominance in the 170-pound division against everyone not named Georges St. Pierre.

So what will happen when the unstoppable force (Penn) meets the immovable object (Fitch), as the dearly departed Gorilla Monsoon used to say?

We'll find out soon enough (10:00 p.m. ET tonight, to be precise).

In the meantime, here's a quick preview of the bout pitting two of MMA's elite against one another in the "Land Down Under."

Check it out:

B.J. Penn

Record: 16-7-1 overall, 12-6-1 in the UFC

Key Wins: Matt Hughes (UFC 123, UFC 46), Sean Sherk (UFC 84), Renzo Gracie (K-1 World Grand Prix 2005 in Hawaii), Kenny Florian (UFC 101)

Key Losses: Georges St. Pierre (UFC 94, UFC 58), Frankie Edgar (UFC 118, UFC 112), Matt Hughes (UFC 63)

How he got here: Penn's legendary status is unquestioned in the sport of MMA. However, he got this number one contender fight against Fitch based on his tremendous legacy and a lack of credible challengers. Last we saw "The Prodigy," he was knocking out Matt Hughes with a perfectly timed right hook to decisively win the trilogy between the two welterweight greats.

How he gets it done: If you were to build a fighter as the perfect foil to Jon Fitch, you would probably end up with BJ Penn. He's the perfect combination of outstanding boxing and unmatched takedown defense. But he also has some of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu in the entire sport. So if he ends up on his back, it's not like he's in no man's land. What Penn should want to do though, is keep the fight standing and make Fitch pay for every single takedown attempt. The more he can make Fitch stand and trade with him, is the more he can utilize his boxing to get inside and batter his bigger foe. Submitting the Fitchster isn't impossible but we're talking about a guy who's only cried uncle once in his entire career -- and that was in his debut as a professional. Don't expect a flyin' Hawaiian tap.

Jon Fitch

Record: 23-3 overall, 13-1 in the UFC

Key Wins: Thiago Alves (UFC 117, UFN 5) Diego Sanchez (UFC 76), Paulo Thiago (UFC 100)

Key Losses: Georges St. Pierre (UFC 87)

How he got here: Winning five of his last six bouts, Fitch has continued to look dominant at 170-pounds, other than his fight against UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. His wrestling and uncanny ability to grind down opponents hasn't exactly endeared him to fans, but with a 13-1 record in the UFC, it's hard to argue with the results. At UFC 117, Fitch dominated top ranked welterweight Thiago Alves en route to a unanimous decision that clearly showed he's head and shoulders above the rest of the division.

How he gets it done: Has Jon Fitch ever come in with a different gameplan? That's the beauty of his meat-grinder style -- it works against everyone. Take 'em down and grind 'em out. And as great as BJ Penn is, he has yet to submit a fighter off his back. Not only that, he's shown that if he can be taken down and pressured, he will lose the fight. Fitch can not afford to be sloppy with his takedowns and will need to set them up with strikes. And in the off chance that Penn actually stuffs said takedowns, he needs to make him carry his weight to get him tired for the later rounds.

Fight "X-Factor": Conditioning is going to play a major role in this bout. Penn is notorious for starting fast but fading the deeper the fight goes. If Fitch can take him down on any sort of consistent basis, BJ doesn't inspire much confidence in his ability to stay fresh. That said, there have been rumblings of Fitch coming in as skinny as he ever as due to his new vegan diet. Will that have any effect on his cardiovascular endurance? At the very least, it's something to look for.

Bottom Line: No one can really count out Penn because of his tremendous talent and athleticism, but this is Fitch's fight to lose. Sure, Penn has all the right skills to win, but how can you pick against a guy with a proven track record of dominance? I truly believe Fitch will do what he does best and grind out another decision. The winner earns himself a shot at the welterweight title and if that isn't enough reason to watch, then you may need to check your pulse.

Kelly Monaco Leaving General Hospital

Is Kelly Monaco getting ready to leave Port Charles and General Hospital for good? That's the rumor going around the web this afternoon -- and we're not really sure where it started. The actress has played Sam McCall on the popular daytime drama since 2003 and her departure would certainly upset fans of the show.

However, we certainly couldn't blame her for wanting to pursue other projects if she is in fact leaving General Hospital. Monaco overcame judge criticism and wardrobe malfunctions to win the first season of Dancing With the Stars. She's was also a Playboy Playmate, so she definitely has the looks to build a good career.

We tried to find Monaco on Twitter to see if she's talking, but we can't find a verified account for the soap star. Guess we will just have to wait and see if anything else comes out -- and we'll be the first to let you know.

Update: SheKnows reader Christine clued us in on the Kelly Monaco rumors.

"It's a rumor because on today's show she was killed off ... it was a cliffhanger at the end, and though they showed her body, I'm sure there's a twist," Christine wrote.

Interesting -- but we think Christine is right. Soap operas thrive on twists and maybe she'll come back as her character's evil twin? It happens all the time.

Scott Walker, governor of Wisconsin, falls for phone prank

The Republican governor at the centre of the union-busting protests in the US has been embarrassed by a prank call that he believed was from one of his billionaire backers.

On the recording of the call, which has been released online, the Republican governor of Wisconsin Scott Walker tells a caller impersonating one of the rightwing Koch brothers that he is looking forward to flying to California to celebrate with them once the battle with the unions was won, and jokes about taking a baseball bat to slug Democratic leaders.

Walker is under siege in his office in the state capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin, in a backlash against his proposed legislation to remove unions' right to collective bargaining and cut public sector workers' pay.

Ian Murphy, who calls in pretending to be David Koch, suggests planting troublemakers among the protesters, who have been peaceful through 11 successive days of demonstrations. Walker says he has thought about doing that but decided against.

The prankster says: "I'll tell you what Scott, once you crush these bastards, I'll fly you out to Cali and really show you a good time."

Walker replies: "Alright, that would be outstanding. Thanks for all the support and helping us move the cause forward. We appreciate it and we're doing the just and right thing for the right reasons and it's all about getting our freedoms back."

The Koch brothers have given millions to the Americans for Prosperity campaign group, which has previously campaigned against Barack Obama's healthcare reforms and tightening environmental controls. It is launching a major advertising campaign supporting Walker in Wisconsin.

Records for the state show that the brothers' Koch Industries was one of the largest contributors to Walker's election campaign.

New Zealand earthquake magnitude 6.3 hits Christchurch

For the second time in five months, New Zealand's south island city of Christchurch was rocked by a major earthquake on Tuesday afternoon local time.
Initial reports from Reuters news agency indicated that there were no reports of casualties, from the magnitude 6.3 temblor.

But the New Zealand Herald is reporting casualties and major damage to downtown buildings, including the Christchurch Cathedral.

In it's live blog, the Herald reports phone lines down, water running through the streets, and several buildings with serious damage.

One blog entry says New Zealand's TV3 is reporting the Pyne Gould financial services building has collapsed. Another, unsubstantiated report claims that the cathedral has collapsed. The New Zealand Press Association reported that the TVNZ building in Christchurch had collapsed. And there's an entry that a facade of a building in downtown Christchurch has collapsed on a bus, injuring passengers. NZTV is reporting at least one fatality.

Christchurch resident Jane Smith who works in the central city told the Herald a work colleague had just returned from helping rescue efforts after a building facade had collapsed on a bus on Colombo St.

"There's people dead. He was pulling them out of a bus."

"Columbo St is completely munted."

"We can't move at the moment because the city's gridlocked."

The quake occurred at 12:51 p.m., during a normal workday in Christchurch, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicenter was relatively shallow - just 3 miles deep – and close, about 6 miles from the country's second largest city, where some 26,000 full-time employees work.

"Obviously this earthquake has taken place at a time where people have been going about their daily business. We're doing everything we can to make sure that people are safe and are evacuating the central city," said New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, about an hour after the quake hit. After an emergency cabinet meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. local time, the prime minister is scheduled to fly to Christchurch.

The city was struck by a force 7.1 quake last September, Reuters reports, which caused serious damage and dented the national economy but it caused only minor injuries.

"The quake is significantly smaller than the previous Christchurch earthquake, however it was very shallow and might have been very close to the centre of the city," Civil Defence spokesman Vince Cholewa told the Herald

"We are still getting a picture of what has happened..."

Lara Logan Suffered 'Brutal' Sexual Assault In Egypt Video

Lara Logan endured a "brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating" while covering the jubilation in Egypt last week following the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, the network said today.

In a statement, CBS said Logan was on assignment for "60 Minutes" while covering the festive atmosphere last Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square when "her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into frenzy."

Logan is one of nearly 140 news correspondents who have been injured or killed since Jan. 30 while covering the political unrest in Egypt, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Logan, a native of South Africa, has been CBS's chief foreign correspondent since 2006. She has regularly filed reports from war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan for "60 MInutes" and the "CBS Evening News."

Logan, 39, went home to Washington on the first flight Saturday and was hospitalized.

"We're pleased to report she's recovering well," Katie Couric said during Tuesday night's broadcast of the "CBS Evening News."

Logan was expected to be released and go home to her husband and 2-year-old son Tuesday night.

Just a week before, the Emmy-winning war reporter survived a harrowing night of being held - blindfolded and forced into a "stress position" - by Egyptian security forces. That day, Feb. 2, many foreign journalists were attacked by Mubarak supporters.

"I'd been ill for a few days - I hadn't mentioned it to anyone at CBS," she told Esquire magazine last week. "I vomited all over the interrogation cell. I vomited all over this office they put me in after that."

Logan was kicked out of the country and she spent the next week struggling to get back, landing back in Cairo on Friday - the day she was attacked.

In an appearance on the "Charlie Rose Show" on Feb. 7, she explained why she was trying so hard to go back to Egypt, despite the danger.

"It's very hard for me to be away from this story," she said. "I feel like I failed because I didn't deliver.

"Fundamentally it's in my blood to be there and to be on the street and listening to people and to do the best reporting that I can."

At least 140 reporters have been injured or killed covering Egypt since Jan. 30, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Fox News Channel's Greg Palkot, who was badly beaten in Egypt on Feb. 2, continues to recover from his injuries and has not been on the air since the attack.

Logan is a fearless foreign correspondent who has reported from some of the world's most dangerous places.

Her colleagues reacted with a flurry of horrified messages on Twitter.

"Sickened and saddened by the attack on Lara Logan. She is in all of our thoughts and prayers," said CNN's Anderson Cooper, another reporter beaten Feb. 2.

"Horrified by dreadful attack on CBS reporter Lara Logan - wishing her full and speedy recovery," CNN's Piers Morgan said.

Logan is on the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists, and has raised money for injured reporters.

"We have seen Lara's compassion at work while helping journalists who have faced brutal aggression while doing their jobs," said CPJ Chairman Paul Steiger.

Few statistics exist about sexual assaults on female correspondents in combat zones, in part because so many are loath to report attacks for fear of losing their beat.

A 2005 survey by the International News Safety Institute in Brussels was sent to 150 female foreign correspondents - only 29 replied. Of the 29, half reported sexual harassment on the job and two had experienced sexual abuse.

Iowa High School Wrestling – Megan Black and Cassy Herkelman Make History

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – On Thursday, Iowa High School wrestling history will be made when Megan Black and Cassy Herkelman take to the mat in separate matches. Black and Herkelman are becoming the first two female wrestlers, ever, in the Iowa’s state championship meet.

But another record could be set in the history books this month. While Michaela Hutchison is the first girl to win a state high-school wrestling championship award ever, Black and Herkelman are attempting to be the first to do so in the state of Iowa.

Hutchinson five years ago in Alaska became the first female high school student to win a state wrestling championship, competing against boys. But in Iowa, it’s never happened. In fact, since the state championship meet was launched in Iowa in 1926, no female has ever qualified to the tournament. This week Black and Herkelman changed that.

Now the two are trying to break another record, going for the state title.

The National Federation of State High School Associations estimates that over six thousand girls wrestled across the country this year. But until this month, Iowa had never had a girl qualify for its state wrestling tournament. This week it has two. Both will compete against male competitors.

The Summer Olympics has sanctioned female wrestling as an Olympic sport since 2004. Three states (Texas, California, and Hawaii) have reportedly sanctioned it on a high school level. But Iowa hasn’t done so for high school students.

When asked by news how they are preparing for the week, the two girls say they aren’t under any pressure. They just want to win, and have every intentions of doing so.

Jeopardy: Watson computer no better than humans so far

Jeopardy!" pitted two of its best players ever against a superhuman opponent on Monday (Feb. 14).

Well, maybe not superhuman -- but definitely nonhuman. The long-running game show began its "IBM Challenge" Monday by having all-time champs Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter play against Watson, a supercomputer that IBM programmers have been using to perfect natural-language processing. (An avatar for the computer, which is the size of a server room, sat behind the podium on stage.)

But hold off on the Skynet doom-and-gloom predictions for now: The humans held their own, at least through the first round.

Watson -- who received information via text files at the same time Alex Trebek read the questions -- jumped off to a fast start. Midway through the first round, the computer had $5,200 to Rutter's $1,000 and Jennings' $200.

Things evened out later on, though, and by the end of round one, Rutter and Watson were tied with $5,000 each, while Jennings trailed with $2,000.

One thing maybe Watson can't do is react to other players' mistakes. In the first round's "name the decade" category, Jennings incorrectly identified the decade Oreos were introduced and the first modern crossword was published as the 1920s; Watson gave the same answer a moment later. Rutter correctly answered the 1910s.

The IBM Challenge includes two "Jeopardy!" games played over three days. Monday's show included a couple of segments about Watson's development, so only one round was played. The challenge continues Tuesday and Wednesday; check your local listings for times.

Wayne Rooney's Bicycle Kick Goal|Wayne Rooney wonder goal vs. Manchester City Overhead kick 12/02/2011

Rooney used a spectacular bicycle kick with his back to the goal for the 2-1 win over rival Man City.

The United and England striker leaped to meet a right-wing cross with an overhead strike that flew into the top corner after 77 minutes.

"I saw it coming over and I thought why not? Nine times out of 10 they go into the stand," Rooney told Sky Sports.

Wow....what a goal by ROOOOOOONEY!!! What a way to win the derby!!" he tweeted, before adding: "That bicycle kick was one dirty strike...POW...what a strike what a goal what a netbuster!!"

Even golfers Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy, playing in the Dubai Desert Classic, commented. McIlroy simply tweeted; "BOOM!!!!!!!!"

Ferguson said the quality of the strike reminded him of United great Denis Law, who scored 171 goals in his stellar career at the club.

"It was stunning," Ferguson said. "We've had some fantastic goals here but in terms of execution ... you'll never see that."

Nani had given United a first-half lead with a neat control and finish, before City equalized with a deflected effort in the 64th.

Lady Gaga's Meat Dress: Outfit With A Message

(CBSNews) Lady Gaga is not only known for her music, but also her outrageous looks. But Gaga's concepts are not always obvious.
Last year, Lady Gaga made headlines when she wore an outfit made of raw meat to the MTV Video Music Awards, accompanied by several discharged gay service members.

"The moral and ethical and political implication of that outfit was far beyond what most people think, which is, 'Eew.' Right?" Lady Gaga told CNN's Anderson Cooper.

"But the reality of it is I was there with four soldiers that had been discharged under the pretense of 'Don't ask, don't tell,'" Lady Gaga said.

"And, you know what? What I was really trying to say was dead meat is dead meat. And anyone that's willing to take their life and die for their country is the same. You're not gay and dead, straight and dead. You are dead," she added.

Not everyone may have gotten the message behind the meat, but the constant costume changes help the pop star maintain the public's curiosity.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva

Kaleb Kelchner filling in for our predictions man, KJ Gould, who is living "The Hangover" from what I can tell, celebrating his birthday!

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio Silva (World Heavyweight Grand Prix Quarter Final Bout)

Kaleb Kelchner: Fedor via TKO, round 2 - I think Fedor is just an all around better fighter than Silva, and it will show as soon as the first bell rings. If Mike Kyle can topple Silva, so can Fedor, and Fedor will finish the job. I also think that Silva knows it, and that will cause him to be tentative early on, allowing for Fedor to size him up and find his range. Fedor will drop him with a right hand, and finish the job with some beautiful shots from above.

Derek Suboticki: Fedor via submission, round 2 - Bigfoot is frustrating. He's got the size, he's got a really legitimate ground game, but he's enigmatic. Looks awesome against Werdum for a round, loses a decision. Beats up Arlovski but can't find the sweet spot. Has, according to Fightmetric, the shittiest first round of what became a win in terms of strikes absorbed, against a guy 50 pounds smaller than him. Bigfoot showed heart (and Kyle's gas tank) coming back, but Fedor ain't Mike Kyle. This is probably the final leg of the Farewell Fedor tour, but the wheels don't fall off until the next round.

KJ Gould: Fedor

Andrei Arlovski vs. Sergei Kharitonov (World Heavyweight Grand Prix Quarter Final Bout)

Kaleb: Arlovski via decision - Kharitonov's style is incredibly easy to break down, and he has some glaring weaknesses. Arlovski's time with Greg Jackson will pay off, and Arlovski will get the job done by follow a slow, but sure game plan to victory. Inside leg kicks and crisp, straight punches will batter Kharitonov, and Arlovski will avoid letting him tee off at all costs. Despite how much damage he may inflict on Kharitonov, Arlovski will have to do his best to not go for the kill, lest he leave himself open to be hit with a classic Kharitonov power shot. It might not be incredibly exciting after it gets repetitive, but it'll work.

Derek: Kharitonov via KO, round 1 - This pick has some nostalgia to it - Sergei used to be my dark horse pick to beat Fedor, and I love the extensive Russian sambo records that he holds. I've decided to take a holiday from remembering his dogshit performance against Jeff Monson, and focus instead on Arlovski. His best win is Tim Sylvia, in what I hesitate to term a fluke only because that heel hook was pretty quick thinking. He's lost three straight, two of them in the first round, and Sergei hits like a mule. Sorry, Leonidas.

KJ: Arlovski

Shane Del Rosario vs. Lavar Johnson

Kaleb: Rosario via TKO, round 1 - First off, I'm never going to pick a guy who would go by Lavar "Big" Johnson. I mean, really? SDL should be able to bring a varied attack that will eventually catch him, and put him to sleep.

Derek: Rosario via KO, round 1 - It's hard not to root for Lavar, given his comeback from a gunshot wound sustained at a barbeque. Del Rosario is just someone I've been looking at for a long time, and I hope he impresses (and then signs a UFC contract).

KJ: Rosario.

Ray Sefo vs. Valentijn Overeem

Kaleb: Overeem via submission, round 1 - This is a ridiculous match up, and as interesting as an "all heavyweight" main card sounds, there are better fighters that deserve to be on the main card here. Neither man is particularly good, but Overeem should be wise enough to get the fight to the ground, and finish it there.

Derek: Sefo via whatever God strikes Overeem down with - I'm just shocked that this fight is even occurring, let alone within the context of the GP. I hope it ends quick and doesn't involve Sefo sloppily defending submission attempts from Underreem for fifteen minutes. That's a fate I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, let alone Strikeforce.

KJ: Sefo

Chad Griggs vs. Gian Villante

Kaleb: Villante via KO, round 1 - Villante should be able to put out enough offense to topple Griggs, although Griggs can take a bit of a beating. I'm wary though, Villante's fights don't tend to last long, and if he can't finish early, he may gas much like Griggs' last opponent, Bobby Lashley. I don't think we'll get that far though.

Derek: Villante via TKO, round 2 - I liked Villante on Helwani's show. Good on SF for giving Griggs another fight - we'll find out here if he has something other than the good fortune to draw gasmonster Bobby Lashley.

Lady Gaga's New Song, "Born This Way," Hits Web

She's on the right track, baby!

After months of hype and teasing, Lady Gaga debuted her new single, 'Born This Way,' this morning. The track, written by Gaga and produced by DJ White Shadow, Gaga and Fernando Garibay, makes good use of the diva's big voice and penchant for drama, combining powerhouse vocals with in-your-face lyrics about race and sexuality.

I wrote ['Born This Way'] in 10 f**king minutes," Gaga told Vogue. "And it is a completely magical message song. And after I wrote it, the gates just opened, and the songs kept coming. It was like an immaculate conception."

Authorities confirm 5 dead in Allentown, Pa., explosion

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Five people -- including a 4-month-old boy -- died in Allentown's massive gas explosion and fire, authorities confirmed at a Thursday afternoon news conference.

And later Thursday, fire officials reported they found the fifth of the bodies in the rubble at 13th and Allen streets.Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim declined to identify the first four bodies recovered, describing them only as a 79-year-old man, a 69-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl and a 4-month-old baby.

The fifth body was found between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Thursday. It is believed to be that of Beatrice Hall, 74, of 544 N. 13th St., who was with her husband, William, 79, at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday when their house exploded and burned, city Fire Marshal Matthew Bainbridge said.

"Everybody's been accounted for that we were aware of," Bainbridge said Thursday night. "Cadaver dogs found the remains. The big thing here was finding Beatrice [Hall]. That was the only person we could not account for."

Family members and friends earlier confirmed the dead as: the Halls and their neighbors Ofelia Ben, 69, Catherine Cruz, 16, and Matthew Manuel Cruz, 4 months, of 542 N. 13th St.About a dozen people were injured and more than 350 were forced to evacuate from surrounding blocks and the Gross Towers seniors apartment complex when an apparent gas leak ignited at 544 N. 13th St.“I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones," Mayor Ed Pawlowski said at the afternoon news conference, adding that the city and social service agencies are ready to help "day and night."

The mayor said two properties were leveled by the blast and six more have to be razed, and a total of 47 properties, including 10 businesses, were damaged. The mayor said what the victims need most "is dollars," and urged those who want to help to call the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley.

About 70 people were likely to be displaced long-term. All residents of Gross Towers have returned to their homes.

At a news conference Thursday morning, Allentown fire Chief Robert Scheirer said no reports of gas odors preceded the explosion. UGI officials said they are still investigating, but said a crew earlier in the week detected no leaks in the area during a routine inspection.“I think we are going under the assumption that it is a gas explosion, but it has not been confirmed to be the case,” Joseph Swope, a company spokesman said earlier.Swope said the 12-inch low pressure main involved in the incident had no leak history. The utility used foam to seal the gas main on both ends of a one-block area at about 3:45 a.m. Thursday. Swope said it took crews some time to cut through reinforced concrete underneath the pavement.

Stunned neighbors groped for words to describe the explosion, which could be heard for miles.

Antonio Arroyo, who lost his house at 530 N. 13th St. to the ensuing fire, said he was sure a bomb had gone off.

“I thought it was bringing the war to our doorsteps,” said Arroyo, who was checking his e-mail when the force of the explosion blasted his computer into him and knocked him to the floor. All the windows in his home blew out and his front door was pushed in.

Arroyo sobbed Thursday morning and hugged his wife, Jill, as he described watching for hours as the flames consumed his house. He didn’t want to leave until the fire was out.

“I’d rather accept what just happened rather than hear from someone that you just lost everything,” he said.Arroyo’s neighbor at 521 N. 13th St., Ernesto Santiago, was afraid to look outside after hearing the blast. He motioned upward with his hands and made a whooshing noise.“Down the street, it was all red flames,” he said. “You could hear people screaming. It was awful.”

An official from the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration said the explosion is under state authority, so the investigation is being handled by the state Public Utility Commission.

Staff from the eastern district office of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency are at the site, said Ruth Miller, the agency's deputy press secretary.

As of 10:45 a.m., city officials had not asked for PEMA assistance. There was also no word on whether there would be an official disaster declaration. Miller said that would depend on the extent of damage and the number of people affected. She said the agency would be monitoring the situation. The blast blew out windows in many homes and businesses surrounding the blast area.Crews on scene called for the Lehigh County coroner at 4:45 a.m., according to police radio reports. Shortly after UGI turned off the gas, smoke began to clear and rescue workers could begin sifting through the debris.“We've found something,” a firefighter radioed.

Allentown residents awoke Thursday to the acrid odor of smoke that blanketed much of center city. Fire crews worked all night in sub-freezing temperatures to tame the blaze and UGI workers scrambled to dig three holes in the ground and cut off gas flow to the area.

The gas leak was under control by 4:30 a.m. and crews began returning residents to portions of the towers. Jason Soke, who lives at 16th and Tilghman streets, said that as soon as he heard the blast, he ran to the scene. “I was stunned,” he said. “There were bricks everywhere. It blew pieces of the house across the street. I thought, holy cow!”
The smoke from the fire drifted east and inundated the block between 12th and 13th streets.

Donald O'Shall of 536 13th St. said he was in his dining room when there was an explosion and he was hit by a door frame. He went outside into the street, saw the burning building and “at least one person on the second floor was on fire,” he said.

The blast broke nearby glass-enclosed porches and downed dozens of power lines, leaving about 150 area residents without power as of 2:30 a.m., according to PPL Electric Utilities.“I thought I was back in Vietnam,” said Leonard Hein of 1231 Allen St., who joined hundreds of people in the streets taking pictures and calling friends. “It sounded like a 122mm rocket.”

At least five Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority buses took senior residents from the eight-story west and 12-story east buildings of the Gross Towers, according to police reports. Buses were stacked up in the 600 block of 14th Street.

About 200 people were evacuated to the Agri-Plex at the Allentown Fairgrounds, but there were only tables and chairs – no beds. Five busloads of dazed and bleary-eyed evacuees began arriving about 12:30 a.m. The American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley also responded.Displaced people at the Agri-Plex were given hot beverages and snacks, said Janice Osborne, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross. Vicky Kistler, director of the Allentown Health Bureau, was there along with nurses to tend to any needs of the Gross Towers residents, Osborne said.

Residents from as far as Bethlehem reported feeling the ground shake.

“I was laying down and I heard the boom,” said Lorraine McCallum of 1227 Allen St. “It shook my house.”

Several victims drove themselves to local hospitals, others were taken by ambulance. All but one had been treated and released, and the remaining victim at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest may be discharged Thursday, officials said.

In 1994, Gross Towers was at the epicenter of another huge explosion in Allentown. An excavation crew bent a natural gas line leading to the complex on May 23, 1994, while removing a buried heating oil tank. The company left the pipe uncovered and unsupported until damaging it again June 9.That night, a gap in the gas line caused gas to flow into Gross Towers, triggering two explosions and a fire at the apartment building for the elderly. The accident killed one person and injured more than 60 others. The cause of Wednesday's explosion is not yet known.
Two Allentown schools were closed Thursday. Luis A. Ramos Elementary School at 1430 W. Allen Street and the IBEAM Academy, the former Jackson Elementary School, at 517 N. 15th St. were closed.

Eliza Kruger, 17-Year-Old, Allegedly Hooked Up With Mark Sanchez

Last week, Deadspin posted a brief story called "Mark Sanchez's 17-Year-Old Lady Friend Has Found A Lawyer," which was about Mark Sanchez's alleged relationship with a high school student. Deadspin said that the full story would be released on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

The story, published yesterday, said that a 17-year-old, "E.K.," met Sanchez at a Manhattan night club and hooked up with him at his home in New Jersey. Kruger sent pictures of the Jets quarterback's home to confirm her story.

The New York Post reported today that the girl's name is Eliza Kruger. According to Deadspin, Kruger repeatedly talked about how Sanchez is "really a nice guy" and "a genuine person."

If the allegations are true, Sanchez did nothing wrong and broke no laws because the age of consent in New Jersey is 16.

David Letterman - Super Bowl MVP, Aaron Rodgers

The Super Bowl MVP said David Letterman, “I watch your show a lot. It is good to be here. “Letterman went on to tell her that Rodgers’ ascension to the throne following Brett Favre has a remarkable history. “I’m not 6’5″ and I’m not 240 pounds, but I think the things you can not measure is often the things that give people the greatest success, “said Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers was born in Chico in Butte County, California. In high school he played two years as quarterback and set school records. Rodgers told David Letterman that he was just 6’2 “and weighs only 190 pounds when he attended Butte Community College. However, he threw 28 touchdown passes and led to a record Butte 10-1, a NorCal championship conference and a No. 2 national ranking. “We had a great team,” said Rodgers. The star of the community college then transferred to Cal, where he became the starting quarterback during his junior year. As a junior, Rodgers led Cal to a 10-1 record and the top five at the end of the regular season with their only defeat coming in a game very tight and played well at # 1 USC, 17-23. Rodgers finally decided to forgo his senior year to enter the 2005 draft by the NFL. When David Letterman asked him what he learned from his past experiences, Rodgers said, “Leading by example.”

Christina Aguilera Messes Up National Anthem at Super Bowl – VIDEO

The Star-Spangled Banner can be a notoriously difficult song to sing, with its broad range and piercing high notes. But usually, the lyrics work out just fine.

At the opening of Super Bowl XLV, less than a minute into the song, Christina Aguilera messed up the words to the national anthem.

Instead of “O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming,” Ms. Aguilera belted out, “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last reaming.” That line was a repeat of one she’d already sung a few seconds earlier, except with some personal embellishments, like she replacing the word “gleaming” with “reaming.”

Ms. Aguilera’s flub was seen by tens of millions of viewers. Twitter was immediately abuzz with talk of her mistake, and by the third quarter her Wikipedia page was changed to reflect that she made a mistake.

While it may be of little comfort to Ms. Aguilera, her slip-up was less dramatic than some recent Super Bowl displays. Most notably at the 2004 halftime show when Justin Timberlake tore off Janet Jackson’s top at the end of their performance. And Ms. Aguilera’s mistake is less likely to end up in court, as did Ms. Jackson’s episode did, when the courts struck down a Federal Communications Commission fine against the network that broadcast the performance.

Six Students at Philadelphia School Arrested After Nadin Khoury was Kidnapped, Beaten & Hung from Tree

Nadin Khoury, 13, says he was on his way home from school when seven older teenagers jumped him and began punching and kicking him outside an apartment complex. One of his alleged attackers filmed the assault, which went on for more than 20 minutes before a woman driving by the scene leapt out of her car and chased the bullies off.

On the video — which the teens later posted to YouTube — Khoury’s attackers can be heard laughing at him as tries to get away. And one young woman, apparently a fellow student, is seen on the tape ignoring Khoury’s cries for help and simply walking away
Khoury said he plans to testify against the teens in court. “Don’t be afraid to speak out; tell somebody what’s going on because if you tell them, maybe this will happen and somebody will take action,” he told NBC.
