The Major League Soccer All-Stars fell to English Premier League powerhouse Manchester United, 5-2, on Wednesday night in front of 70,728 fans at Reliant Stadium - the fourth-largest crowd to witness an all-star game in United States' sports history.
The loss is the first in regulation for the MLS All-Stars under the current format, although they fell to Everton in penalty kicks last year.
The game started poorly for MLS, with a Kevin Alston back pass being picked off by Federico Macheda and deposited past goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts for a 1-0 United lead less than 30 seconds into the game.
Macheda made it 2-0 inside 12 minutes when the Italian teenager headed home a Nani corner kick.
MLS started to find its legs thereafter, with a Juan Pablo Angel free kick that was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar in the 15th minute being the team's best first-half chance.
United narrowly missed going up three before the break when Darren Fletcher rocketed a shot off the crossbar from in close after working a give-and-go at the top of the area to get free.
MLS came out in the second half aiming to get on the board early, with a Chad Marshall header off a Javier Morales free kick easily saved by van der Sar.
But just after the hour mark, Brian Ching of the hometown Houston Dynamo pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 when he headed home a David Ferreira free kick at the near post.
Six minutes later, however, Man United got the goal back on a sublime free kick by Darron Gibson into the top left corner, past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Nick Rimando, who replaced Ricketts for the second half.
Three minutes later United made it 4-1 when Tom Cleverley flicked a bouncing ball over the head of defender Wilman Conde as he broke into the area before volleying past Rimando.
Mexican international Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez scored his first goal in a Manchester United uniform in the 84th minute before former Dynamo star Dwayne De Rosario - currently of Toronto FC - closed out the scoring in the 90th minute.
Note: The 18-year-old Macheda, who joined United's youth academy from Lazio in 2007 before making nine appearances for United's senior team in league play the past two seasons, earned Most Valuable Player after scoring the game's first two goals.

How awesome is it that after Kenneth Branagh, the first member of the Thor cast to take the stage in Hall H is Clark Gregg?
When Chris Hemsworth takes the stage and instantaneously the very Australian muscle man has the place going nuts.Natalie Portman says her character doesn't rely on her cleavage and brushes off an unexpected question from the moderator about the Star Wars Prequels, saying that "blue screen acting is a skill you need to learn." Portman says she's down for future Thor movies, but won't be in Avengers.
The moderator makes up for it when he refers to Clark Gregg as "the glue of the Marvel Universe." Gregg says his line about New Mexico in Iron Man 2 was made up on the fly.
Tom Middleston says he loves playing Loki and he gets to create lots of mischief and destruction.
Kat Dennings makes a dopey statement about not liking comics and silences Hall H. Way to go.
Hemsworth's voice makes us want to go to Outback Steakhouse and now it is time to see some footage.
We open on a S.H.I.E.L.D. base. Thor is being interrogated by Agent Coulson. Coulson doesn't understand where Thor learned his fighting moves.
Thor obviously kicked a lot of ass and destroyed a lot of stuff. There's then a scene where he is in bed. He jumps up and starts going crazy hitting people, creating mayhem.
Thor is now kicking ass in the rain, cross-cut with Coulson's interrogation. Then we go to Asgard.
Sweeping shots. Everything is made of clouds. There are planets in the background. Then: Odin and Thor screaming at each other in the Asgard Palace, and Loki smiling like a douchebag. Odin sentences Thor to Earth.
The Warriors Three watch as Thor is shot down to Earth through. . . .what we'll describe as "magic clouds." He is found by Natalie Portman, who takes him to a hospital. There, Kat Dennings salivates over the hunky Norse God.
Thor and Natalie are searching for Mjolnir. When he finds the hammer it is crusted and in the ground. He screams. There is lightning. And we cut to a montage of:
The Warriors Three, Loki, helmets with horns, ice landscapes, Renee Russo as Thor's Mommy and a final bit of Thor flying with Mjolnir. Cuts to title card. Then back to Agent Coulson. The dust clears. A dumb agent asks, "Is that one of Stark's?" Caulson says, "That guy doesn't tell me anything."
Dust clears and we see: The Destroyer. They tell him to disarm and his head opens up with lasers blasting out, blowing up cars.
Kenneth Branagh compared Thor to Henry V after this footage.

Powerful thunderstorms have caused widespread flooding in the southern Wisconsin area, and has forced Milwaukee’s airport to close. According to authorities, the storms also opened up a giant sink hole, and hospitalized two people after they were struck by lightning.
According to a report at the Associated Press, heavy rain hit the region for several hours on Thursday (July 22nd), and the floods caused traffic jams along the water-blocked roadways. There were also reports from the National Weather Service of several tornadoes.

The former governor of Nevada, Kenny Guinn, has died after sustaining injuries in a fall from his roof.
Although a family friend confirmed to CNN that Guinn died after the fall, The Clark County Coroner did not confirm a cause of death. An autopsy for Guinn, who was 73, is scheduled for tomorrow. The former governor was first elected in 1998, and re-elected in 2002.
Tim Pawlenty, Vice Chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association (of which Guinn was Chairman in 2004-2005) released the following statement in response to Guinn’s sudden death:
“Kenny Guinn was that rare type of politician – a true statesman – who had the respect and admiration of all his colleagues. He had a warm and gentle nature, and always put the people of Nevada first. He will be remembered as one of the finest governors in the history of the state.
Kenny was a true friend and will be missed by the many of us who were privileged to know him.
His wife, Dema, and sons, Steve and Jeff, are in the hearts and prayers of all of us.”
Just as the David Boreanaz cheating stories have been laid to rest (yes, he did have an affair with Tiger Woods’ mistress Rachel Uchitel), he’s now facing a sexual harassment lawsuit. The timing is especially bad, given that he seems to be well on the way to repairing his relationship with wife Jaime Bergman and their son.
So who’s the woman behind the David Boreanaz lawsuit?
It’s actress Kristina Hagan, who gave a press conference today alongside celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred, who will be representing her. Allred seems to be the center of all things Boreanaz: she’s also Uchitel’s lawyer, and represents a third, unnamed, woman who has filed a sexual harassment suit against the Bones actor.
Hagan, who was an extra on Bones, “is an actress who is working towards her goals, but who like many other actresses has not be able to achieve them. For that reason she is extremely vulnerable as many actresses are in Hollywood,” Allred said. “Ms. Hagan’s allegations are set forth her lawsuit. We will have no further comment on them.”
Hagan’s lawsuit claims that Boreanaz sent her inappropriate text messages in 2009, and “attempted to kiss her and touch her breasts but she pushed him away,” after which he masturbated in front of her.
So who is Kristina Hagan? According to her resume, posted on IMDB.com, she can play characters ages 30-45, has had bit parts in movies including Martrix II and George of the Jungle, and appeared in ads for brands ranging from Charles Schwabb to MacDonalds. She holds a B.A. in Business Marketing from San Jose State.
Well, this is interesting.. A whale which was showing off its moves in Table Bay, jumped up out of the water “Free Willy” style, and what happens? The whale lands on top of a sailboat.
The whale flattened the steel mass and brought down the rigging before gallantly sliding back into the water and swimming on its way.“It was quite scary,” commented Paloma Werner, who had previously been enjoying the trip with her boyfriend come business partner, Ralph Mothes.“We thought the whale was going to go under the boat and come up on the other side. We thought it would see us.” Ms. Werner continued. However, this was not the case, as the boat had its engine turned off.
The manager/scientist of the Cape Town Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria, Meredith Thornton, shed some light onto the subject for us: “Whales don’t see much by way of their eyes but by sound in the water.”
Given that the whale had such poor eyesight, and that the water was particularly rough, Thornton commented that the whale, presumably a young whale most likely did not even realize the boat was in the way.The hapless couple first spied the whale when it was a stone’s throw away, from their yacht. It jumped out of the water once, and before they could make a move, the whale was only a hair lengths away from the vessel.“There was hardly any wind, so we couldn’t get out of the way,” countered Werner. “We didn’t have time to take any evasive action.”
This just goes to show you, when you are out gallivanting around, always keep your engines running.

My love for Nicki Minaj runs deeper than metaphors and similes can even describe. It's the purest hip-hop admiration I have had since my mid-90's Lil' Kim infatuation -- and that was massive.
Sitting at the #1 spot on the Billboard Rap charts, Nicki's latest single "Your Love" is the downright business! While the actual track samples Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You's," the recently released -- and Hype Williams directed -- video pulls from inspiration like Lucy Liu's "Kill Bill" character and features a cameo from the smoking hot Michael Jai White.
While her last solo-single "Massive Attack" was a major fish out of water (read: flop) her cameos on Christina Aguilera's "Woo Hoo" and M.I.A's "TeqKilla" have put Nicki back in our good graces. A new music video finally brings her into the center stage all by her lonesome, where she deserves to be.
The track is the second from her yet to be released, or titled for that matter, album said to drop November 23 of this year. M.I.A. said it best when she bluntly yapped, "Nicki Minaj runs hip-hop" ... indeed M.I.A. ... indizzledeed. Check out Nicki new video "Your Love" below.

Georgia is the only state with a primary tonight. Georgia, like several other states, requires a runoff if no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote. Georgia’s runoff is scheduled for August 10th. So what is important is not just who wins the primaries tonight, but their winning percentage and who takes second place are very important, too.
There are several races of some interest, with the most important being the Republican primary for Governor. Secretary of State Karen Handel is expect to get the most votes in the crowded primary, but is unlikely to avoid a runoff, so it will be important to see who comes in second. There are three other candidates in the race that have at least a legitimate chances to also make it to the runoff: former Rep. Nathan Deal, Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine and former state Sen. Eric Johnson. You can follow live election results at Politico.
7:00 pm – Polls are now closed in the state but don’t expect any real numbers for at least half an hour.
7:50 pm – With almost an hour into the counting, we are still at just 1% return. So far in the GOP Gov primary Deal leads with 29%, Handerl 23%, Oxendine 23%, Johnson 17%
8:05 pm – With 5% reporting Handerl 31.8%. Oxendine 21.7% and Deal 21.4% are extremely close for second
8:15 pm – In the 12th district with 16% reporting it looks like John Barrow (D) will hold on to his seat. He has 64.7% compared to Thomas at 35.3%. Thomas shows improvement over last time but not enough.
8:35 pm – In 8th district GOP primary Austin Scott is sitting right on the bubble with 22% reporting. He has 49.9% of vote, just shy of what is needed to avoid runoff against Ken Deloach at 31.8%.
8:58 pm – It was not really much of a race, but Mike Thurmond was declared the winner of the Democratic Senate race with 82.7% of the vote.
9:05 pm – Republican Gov runoff is increasingly looking to be Handel vs Deal with 22% reporting. Handel is at 32.6%, Deal at 24.7%, Oxendine at 17.8, Johnson at 17.6%
9:20 pm – Dem Gov candidate Roy Barnes should easily be able to avoid a runoff and prepare for the general while the Republicans keep fighting each other. Barnes currently has 57.9% of the vote.
9:27 pm – Roy Barnes has officially been declared the outright winner in the Dem Gov primary.
9:40 pm – Dem Incumbent Hank Johnson is looking safe in the 4th district. With 28% report Johnson has 55%
9:56 pm – It most feel like the never ending campaign for Rep. Tom Graves. With 76.1% reporting he is just under the bubble with 49.8% and Lee Hawkins has 23.5%. If Graves is forced into a runoff that will be the fourth election in only a few months in which Graves has faced Hawkins.
10:30 pm – AP has been real slow calling races but with 77% reporting and Incumbent Dem John Barrow up up 63% to Thomas 37% it is pretty clear he is going to win in the 12th district.
10:35 pm – The big race tonight the Republican Gov primary has just been called with 77.9% reporting. It will be a runoff on Aug 10th between Handel with 32.9% and Deal with 23.8%.
10:40 pm – In 4th district Rep. Johnson (D) is going to avoid a runoff. He has just been declared the winner outright.
10:45 pm – In 12th it is been called for incumbent Dem John Barrow.
10:51 pm – Barrow is not going to know who is opponent is yet. The GOP primary is producing a runoff between McKinney with 44% and Smith with 27%. Barrow is a strong favorite in the general.
10:55 pm – In the 9th district the seemingly eternal fight continues. Rep. Tom Graves has been force into a runoff again against Lee Hawkins by only get 49% of the vote. This will be the forth election in only a few months where they face each other. Graves campaign team is going to be pretty tired by August 10th.
10:57 pm – Establishment choice Austin Scott wins the GOP 8th district primary clean and will go on to face incumbent Jim Marshall in the general. Despite being a fairly Republican leaning district Marshall is still favored to win but could have a decent fight on his hands.
11:02 pm – The GOP primary in the extremely red 7th district has just been called. It is a runoff against Rob Woodall with 36.9% and Jody Hice with 25.7%. The will of this runoff is almost assured to become the next congress member from the 7th district.
With all the interesting races declared I’m calling it a night.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the woman Sherrod allegedly discriminated against considers Sherrod a "friend for life" and insists that she worked tirelessly to save her family's farm.
82-year-old Eloise Spooner says Sherrod "kept us out of bankruptcy."
"Her husband told her, 'You're spending more time with the Spooners than you are with me,' "Spooner told the AJC. "She took probably two or three trips with us to Albany just to help us out."
Sherrod also told the AJC that the incident took place 24 years ago, and that she told the story in order to emphasize the need to move beyond race. "The story helped me realize that race is not the issue, it's about the people who have and the people who don't," she said.Shirley Sherrod, a USDA official in Georgia, has resigned after publicly admitting that race played a factor in her decision to limit how much aid would be given to a white farmer.
Sherrod, who is African American, made the comments during a local NAACP banquet on March 27, according to information displayed on the video. A clip of her speech first appeared Monday morning on BigGovernment.com and aired that evening on Fox News.
Her resignation as the agency's state director of rural development was quickly accepted by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. He cited a zero-tolerance policy and told CNN that he was working to "reverse the checkered civil rights history at the department."
In her controversial speech, Sherrod discussed the first time she was "faced with having to help a white farmer save his farm." She claimed that during the conversation, the man "was trying to show me he was superior to me."
"I was struggling with the fact that so many black people had lost their farmland," Sherrod told the crowd. "And here I was faced with having to help a white person save their land."
"I didn't give him the full force of what I could do."
During the portion of her speech posted online, she mentioned that Chapter 12 bankruptcy had just been enacted for family farmers. That protection started in 1986, more than two decades before Sherrod joined the USDA. She added that the incident "opened my eyes."
The website for the department Sherrod last oversaw has a notice clearly stating that the USDA "prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and marital or family status."
Sherrod appears to have a long record in the civil rights movement prior to her USDA appointment, which came almost exactly a year ago. It's possible that she has been on the other side of the "checkered history" that Vilsack referred to.
The Rural Development Leadership Network lists her as a board member and has a page congratulating her on the appointment. In that announcement, they state that Sherrod and her husband, Charles, were part of a multi-million dollar settlement against the USDA based on civil rights claims from the 1980s. The case wouldn't be settled until May 12, 2009. She was appointed to her USDA job two months later.
A picture on the RDLN website shows her standing with her husband next to a sign for the Charles M. Sherrod Civil Rights Park in their hometown of Albany, GA.
NAACP President Benjamin Jealous issued a statement late on Monday saying his organization was appalled by Sherrod's "shameful" actions.
The NAACP has recently been embroiled in a heated debate after passing a resolution condemning the tea party movement for tolerating bigotry. Mark Williams, spokesperson for the Tea Party Express, responded by calling the NAACP racist and was later expelled from the National Tea Party Federation for a racially charged blog post. Tea party activists are now planning a summit to combat racism.
According to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, the local chapter of the NAACP has also firmly rejected Sherrod's comments. They further report:

The Oahu region of Hawaii was hit yesterday by a 3.5 magnitude earthquake. No serious damage was reported, but tourists got to experience one of Hawaii’s most famous events.
The volcanic islands are hit by a number of quakes daily, but most of them are too weak to be noticed.
The locals are used to the volcanic movements, but they still fear that the Big One might hit, like the 6.9 magnitude one that destroyed hundreds of homes on the Kona coast on the west side of Hawaii. However, the earthquakes are not the most feared disasters in Hawaii.
The tsunamis are far more dangerous. One of the most destructive tsunamis in Hawaii occurred on April 1, 1946, following an Aleutian Islands earthquake. Waves 55 feet high, crest to trough, struck the northeast coast of Hawaii.
A recent 7.3 earthquake in Papua New Guinea created some unrest, but it seems that it won’t cause any dangerous tsunamis in Hawaii.

Obama Deception Censored? Fall Of The Republic Alex Jones New Hit – Alex Jones the man behind controversial documentaries like “The Obama Deception: The Mask Comes Off” and “Fall of the Republic: Vol. 1, The Presidency of Barack H. Obama” has released a Youtube video claiming that his work is being censored.
Jones who is a well known conservative radio host recently released his 2009 film on the popular video hosting site and apparently it has been erased.
Here is what the conspiracy theorist had to say about his vanishing clips:
“This was a criminal act, and You Tube needs to investigate, track the IP and find out who did it.The Obama Deception was getting more and more popular, and the establishment doesn’t like the fact that it exposes the Left-Right paradigm and identifies Obama as a puppet.”
If Alex Jones really wanted to expose Obama and explained his ideas behind the “New World Order” why not re-upload The Obama Deception: The Mask Comes Off to You Tube and Facebook?

So you want the whole story about Kerligirl13? Check out the steamy photo below and you’ll understand. You think none of this makes any sense, like it’s all gibberish and spam, but really–and I hate to be the one to break this to you–you’re just not very literate. This just in: Kerligirl13. You heard it here first. We’ve received so many hits our server almost crashed. UPDATE: Kerligirl13. This is even crazier than that Winnebago Destruction Derby. As reported by TMZ, the photos are legitimate. Our experts have examined them for tampering and the results are negative.
Fox News was like, “Kerligirl13???”, and CNN was like “Kerligirl13!!!!”. Personally, we don’t really care, but we’re covering this anyway. The whole internet is buzzing about this story and we couldn’t help but chime in with our opinion. Watch the full streaming video below.
The real question is why isn’t the mainstream media covering this story? Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. We just got off the phone with our contact at the Pentagon. Folks, things are about to get really hairy. The headlines read Kerligirl13 but they don’t tell the whole story. Not the most interesting story, but it’s a slow news day and people keep asking so here goes nothing. The video got taken down, but we’re hosting it here until we get a notice from their attorneys (or run out of bandwidth). Check it out below. This is just like the time that Balki Bartokomous’ cousin visited from Mypos and stole all of Balki’s money. Then Larry beat the crap out of him with a 2×4 (okay I made that part up, but Kerligirl13? That’s pretty messed up). Everyone thinks this is it, but it is not. At least I don’t think so. Do you?

All over the internet, people are searching for the Chupacabra pictures.
The pictures of the brutal Chupacabras have even become one of the hottest searched-for information today. Recently, Chupacabra was found in Texas.
One of the evil and creepy looking mythological creatures was killed by a rancher in Hood County, Texas. According to the reports, the killed creature looks a lot like the inexplicable monster Chupacabras.
According to Animal Control Officer Frank Hackett, the found creature was real ugly and horrible. It cannot be considered among the normal animals. It was also reported that another Chupacabra was set to death earlier in the week in Hood County.
The found animals that are suspected to be a Chupacabras will undergo DNA testing to conclude what they really are.

America’s Got Talent is a American reality television series about features singers, dancers, magicians, comedians and other performers of all ages on the NBC television network.
Future Funk is adorable, but they’d better not start mud-slinging! Nothing’s more disconcerting than a child with a competitive drive like Omarosa. So how many childrens’ hearts will break tonight? The hearts of RNG (and then my DVR shut off because Howie took forever and this show shouldn’t be an hour long to begin with).

George Steinbrenner, the owner of the New York Yankees, whose pugnacious leadership restored the glory of baseball's most storied franchise, helped secure seven World Series titles and made the Yankees the first billion-dollar baseball franchise, died July 13 at a hospital in Tampa after a heart attack.
Mr. Steinbrenner, who turned 80 on July 4, had handed day-to-day management of the team over to his sons two years ago. The New York Daily News reported that he had been in poor health for several years after a series of strokes.
Mr. Steinbrenner, who was undoubtedly the best known and most contentious owner in professional sports, became the principal owner of the Yankees in 1973. He transformed a team failing at the box office and on the field by investing heavily to bring the game's best players to the Bronx and by demanding nothing less than victory.
"Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing," he once said.
Mr. Steinbrenner was a shipping executive from Cleveland when he led a consortium that bought the team for $10 million. He promised to keep his hands off the Yankees, saying, "I'll stick to building ships."That pledge soon vanished. Few team owners in sports were as overbearing or tempestuous as Mr. Steinbrenner, who was universally known as the Boss. Players and staff members were dismissed for the smallest infraction, and Mr. Steinbrenner micromanaged every detail of his franchise, from the length of his players' hair to groundskeeping and press releases. After games, he was known to direct traffic outside Yankee Stadium. Sportscaster Howard Cosell called him "Patton in pinstripes" -- an analogy Mr. Steinbrenner relished.
Mr. Steinbrenner feuded with many of his star players and managers, notoriously hiring and firing manager Billy Martin five times in a 14-year period. If players could not measure up to the pressures of New York and the standards of the Yankees, they were unceremoniously shipped out."George is a great guy, unless you have to work for him," Lou Piniella, a two-time Yankee manager, said in 2004.
In 1990, Newsweek magazine pronounced Mr. Steinbrenner "the most hated man in baseball," and in 2003 an executive with the rival Boston Red Sox called the Yankees "the evil empire."
Over time, Mr. Steinbrenner's image softened, and his fame reached beyond baseball and became a part of popular culture. He was portrayed as a loud-mouthed character on "Seinfeld" -- seen only from behind and voiced by Larry David -- and appeared on "Saturday Night Live."

Pop quiz, Crushers! If you've noticed the words "BMX racer" and "Corey Bohan" lurking in your minds during "The Hills," it's because...
A) He's got a huge crush on Spencer
B) He's hoping to be noticed by a casting producer and given his own reality spin-off show
C) He and Audrina Patridge are back on like Donkey Kong
We'll give you a hint: There's romance in the air, and it's NOT because Corey is hoping to become the next Mrs. Pratt. According to Audrina, who talked to us from the finale's red carpet, she and her former beau are together again. And it sounds serious!
"I'm with Corey," Audrina told MTV news. "He's always been in the background. He's always been my one true love."
(Hear that, Ryan Cabrera and Justin Bobby? You guys were just filler.)
Audrina also dished on what she's up to now that "The Hills" has finally finished — including confirming the rumors that a new reality show is in the works, one that introduces fans to her family. The star promises that we'll see a different side of her than the L.A. party girl we've gotten to know over six seasons of dates, drama, and dudes.
"It's real insight into my life," she said of the show. "I'm a little scared [to have my family on the show]. It's really hard to let that sink in, but we're really close. I'm really goofy. I ramble a lot. I don't always have blank stares."
Not one to sit around in a post-Hills funk, Audrina also just wrapped work on "Honey 2," and she says she's looking forward to a future where she gets to spread her wings.
"It's bittersweet. It still hasn't hit me," she said. "It's gonna be hard. Everybody's gonna have a new path and new beginnings."
Will you watch Audrina's new reality show? What do you think about her calling Corey her "one true love" after you saw all those moments with her and Justin?
The MLB All Star game arrived today, and throwing the first pitch we had Rod Carew. The Hall of Famer threw the first pitch in the game following the rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, performed by “Glee” actress Amber Riley.Rod Carew spent much of his career in Angel Stadium, so it was great to see again this baseball star, that surely has nothing to worry about getting unemployment cover!
Carew has acted this week as Major League Baseball’s honorary spokesperson for the All-Star Week. Earlier on the day, during the Red Carpet show presented by Chevy, Carew rode the lead parade vehicle. He was seen very moved by the All-Stars Among Us celebration.
Harvey Pekar, the Cleveland comic book author who made prickly honesty about everyday life into an artistic credo and whose outward aspect of dour dishevelment masked a passionate, elegant intellect, has died. He was 70.
Pekar was found dead early Monday by his wife, writer Joyce Brabner, at home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, said Powell Caesar, a spokesman for the Cuyahoga County coroner's office. An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of death.
Best known for his sporadic, dyspeptic and largely autobiographical comic series "American Splendor," which started in 1976 and later inspired a feature film, Pekar forged a distinct authorial voice — and a popular persona — that fused caustic and frequently self-lacerating wit, Rust Belt stoicism, casual bohemianism and shrewd observations about quotidian human existence. Many of Pekar's writings benefited immeasurably from the quality of the accompanying artwork, supplied by such collaborators as Frank Stack and R. Crumb, a longtime friend and early supporter of Pekar. Crumb once praised Pekar's gift for spinning art out of one man's middle American reality "so staggeringly mundane it verges on the exotic."
Pekar's most famous non-serialized work, "The Quitter" (2005), a book-length, backward-glancing appraisal of his scrappy younger days and the formation of certain of his lifelong obsessions and neuroses, was illustrated by Dean Haspiel. Pekar and Brabner collaborated on "Our Cancer Year," an unsparing account of the author's battle with lymphoma, illustrated by Stack.Although Pekar's work and public utterances expressed a deep skepticism toward power, privilege and intellectual conformity (and those who wield them as tools against the masses), he evinced generosity and empathy toward ordinary Americans, especially fellow loners and outsiders.
Besides his own autobiographical writings, Pekar chronicled others' lives in such works as "American Splendor: Unsung Hero" (2003), which examined the Vietnam War experience of one of his co-workers at a Cleveland veterans hospital.Rather than merely depressive whingeing, Pekar's work was capable of radiating an anguished spiritual yearning that fans found to be as ennobling as it was mordantly funny and that some critics regarded as downright Dostoevski-esque in its agonized humanity.
Pekar's artistic and political sensibilities were shaped by the 1960s counterculture. Besides his notable role in championing the novelistic graphic comic book, he had an intense dedication to jazz and to avant-garde and underground art forms in general.
His dust-ups with David Letterman during appearances on the late-night talk show endure today on You Tube as minor classics of pugilistic repartee. In those encounters, Pekar upbraided General Electric, the corporate parent of Letterman's NBC network, and made his host's famous grin dissolve into a grimace after calling him "a shill for GE." For a time, Pekar was banned from the program.
In an interview Monday, comic book writer and historian Mark Evanier said that readers of Pekar's work "knew the details of his life better than they knew the lives of some of the great star superheroes."
Evanier once met Pekar at a comic book convention in Chicago, "and it was not a pleasant encounter.""He was just running around complaining that he had to give this talk that he had agreed to and there were no doughnuts," said Evanier. "It was oddly reassuring that in real life, he was the exact same person that he was in the comic books or sitting kvetching with David Letterman."
Born Oct. 8, 1939, Pekar was the child of Polish Jewish immigrants. He, his parents and his younger brother lived above the family's grocery store.Pekar dropped out of Case Western Reserve University and eventually found a job as a file clerk with the Cleveland Veterans Administration Hospital. After retiring from that job in 2001, he continued to write and collaborate on books about the Beat Generation, the 1960s activist group Students for a Democratic Society and Macedonia's efforts not to get drawn into the Balkans conflict of the late 1990s, as well as jazz criticism.
He won the American Book Award in 1987 for his first compilation of "American Splendor." The 2003 film dramatization of his work, also called "American Splendor," took home the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize for drama. In a statement, actor Paul Giamatti, who portrayed Pekar in the film, called him "one of the most compassionate and empathetic human beings I've ever met."
"He had a huge brain and an even bigger soul," Giamatti said. "And he was hilarious. He was a great artist, a true American poet, and there is no one to replace him."
Pekar also wrote the libretto for musician-composer Dan Plonsey's "jazz opera," a meta-autobiographical work suitably titled "Leave Me Alone," in which the two men played themselves. At home in metropolitan Cleveland, Pekar took pleasure in cultivating what he described as a simple, writing-focused, gastronomically incorrect lifestyle (potato chips, frozen foods). He reportedly wrote every day, using a two-finger typing style.
Brabner was his third wife. He immortalized their romance in an issue of "American Splendor," bearing the subtitle "Harvey's Latest Crapshoot: His Third Marriage to a Sweetie from Delaware and How His Substandard Dishwashing Strains Their Relationship."
In addition to Brabner, Pekar is survived by the couple's daughter, Danielle.

David Ortiz put on a show in every round to win the 2010 Home Run Derby. Ortiz hit 11 home runs in the final. Hanley Ramirez finished second. Ramirez hit just five home runs in the finals.
Ortiz never seemed to tire. He hit eight home runs in the first, but that was good enough to advance. Then he hit 13 in the second round. Just when you thought he'd fall apart, he goes out and hits 11 in the finals. This really was a moment for Papi to say to the world, "Hey, I can still hit." Sure, the Home Run Derby means nothing at all. Sometimes it all comes down to luck. But let's give him this moment because after that showing, he really does deserve it.
Congratulations, David Ortiz!

Nice touch from Spain’s goalscorer Andres Iniesta today, who celebrated his 116th minute World Cup winning strike by whipping off his jersey to reveal a handwritten message on his vest type thingy. The message read: “Dani Jarque siempre con nostros” (Dani Jarque always with us) in reference to the Esanyol player who passed away at the age of 26 after a heart attack in the summer of 2009.
Iniesta was inevitably booked for removing his shirt, which I’m sure he won’t worry about too much having won the World Cup and paid homage to a deceased friend/colleague, plus what’s one yellow card buried amongst the thousand others in this final? But this incident makes me think that maybe shirt removal bookings should be dependenet on quality of underlying t-shirt message, as in: tribute to deceased player after scoring in the World Cup final = you get a pass.

Spain wins the World Cup, finally claiming a place among the elite of world soccer after beating the Netherlands by a single goal deep in extra-time to lift a first World Cup trophy to go with their European Championship trophy of two years ago.
The victory confirms them as the best team in the world in recent times, but in truth, they rarely touched the heights this month and today there was no repeat of the second half charge against Germany in the semifinal. The passing was not as slick and there was little of the authority that we have become accustomed to with Spain.
They become the lowest scoring champions in the competition’s history following four 1-0 victories during their progress through a tournament that only flickered into life and fell far short of what the football hype machine promised.
The man who won it for them was the best player on the field, Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta. He more than anyone else constantly sought the ball and, amid the rush, had the presence of mind to take up intelligent positions in space.
He had wasted two good chances before, but with just four minutes of extra time left, he was once again free, this time on the edge of the Dutch box, where Cesc Fabregas slipped him the ball. His first touch saw it spin up and then the midfielder hammered it past the excellent Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg to finally break the deadlock.
Germany defeats a defiant Uruguay 3-2 in a wide open game for 3rd place in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Germany coach Joachim Loew said his team was going home “with a very good feeling.”"We achieved more than we perhaps expected,” Loew said.

Lady Gaga performed on the 'Today' show on Friday morning for a crowd of an estimated 20,000 people who took over a humid and rainy Rockefeller Plaza in New York.
The singer started her set with the classic Gershwin ballad 'Someone to Watch Over Me,' wearing an all-white ensemble of pants, a bra and a blazer. With dancers backing her, she took off the jacket and launched into her hit 'Bad Romance.'
Before continuing the performance, the hosts of the 'Today' show talked to Lady Gaga about the realities of fame and her new music."There are certainly things that are difficult to deal with," Gaga said. "But the kind of fame that I cherish is the relationship I have with my fans."
Lucky for her fans, Lady Gaga then performed 'You and I,' a brand new song from her upcoming record. The singer sat alone at her piano to play the soulful rock ballad and climbed atop it for the finale of the song. After a break, Lady Gaga returned to the stage in a black version of her previous outfit to sing 'Alejandro,' encouraging her "little monsters" to put their hands up. She closed her set with a performance of 'Teeth.'

Last night on ESPN, LeBron James announced his decision as to which team he has chosen to play with and hopes to win a championship. He announced "I'm going to take my talents to South Beach and I'm going to the Miami Heat. I feel like this is going to be the best opportunity to win and not just this season but in multiple years."
Pat Riley, President of the Miami Heat, convinced Dwayne Wade to stay with the Heat and added Chris Bosh and LeBron James to the roster. So the only question left is, Heat jersey anyone? Can we expect the current coach Erik Spoelstra, to do the same? Let’s hope so, for according to LeBron, it is not about the money, “All three of us are going to take less money, because we wanted to play alongside each other . . It's not about getting the max deal. If it was I would have stayed in Cleveland."
The new Miami triple threat have already felt victory with the gold medal USA basketball team in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing for which LeBron said was a big factor in the decision. So while the fans in Miami and South Florida in general, are dancing in the streets and asking for LeBron James Heat jerseys, some more than disappointed ex-fans in Cleveland are burning theirs. LeBron at the age of 18, was the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA draft and was chosen by the Cavaliers after they won the draft lottery.
Die-hard fans have been cheering him on in Cleveland for the past seven years yet there are some who really do not care where he chooses to play and couldn't care less about the demand for LeBron James Heat jerseys. LeBron has used his decision to make the announcement on ESPN to support the operation of Boys and Girls Clubs by sending them all the profits from advertising during the show. Bet the Miami Heat in 2011 NBA Championship odds at Bodog sportsbook with a 10% bonus and 110% poker bonus
LeBron James is saving one of the biggest announcements of the season for one of the biggest sports networks on television.
ESPN have announced that they will host LeBron James gala at 9pm Thursday, where LeBron will discuss his future after becoming the most sort after free agent on the 1st of July this year.
It has been reported that six sides (Bulls, Knicks, Nets, Clippers, Heat and Cavs) have had formal meetings with LeBron within the last week to discuss a deal for his future.
The Knicks have not been informed if they are in the running or not, but they believe they stand a strong chance as they have appeared to secure a five-year deal for Amar’e Stoudemire, a player that can draw in any other player in the world on reputation alone. It is also reported that the Knicks are believed to be the only team (out of the six) that have had a second meeting with LeBron’s agent Leon Rose. Grunwald (in charge of finance at the Knicks) is believed to have told Rose that after they had signed Stoudemire and LeBron they would still have money to sign other ‘big names’, and if they secure these two and still have money, then the Knicks will surely be a dominant force in the NBA next season.
The Knicks know that LeBron will be in New York this weekend to attend the wedding of Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony and La La Vasquez. However, the question on Knicks fans minds will be if he is a player for them by the weekend. Tune into ESPN on Thursday at 9pm to find out.

Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi got together last night to secretly tape an interview that ended abruptly when Jake exploded in anger -- and a source tells TMZ this isn't the first time
Jake and Vienna were talking about their breakup during the taping when Jake lost his temper -- and reportedly cocked his arm and made a fist in Vienna's direction.
A source close to Vienna claims Jake "has a really bad hidden temper. He snaps all the time, it was just the first time he did it in front of people."
Jake and Vienna had to be separated on the set and the interview was pretty much over before it began.
Jake's rep hasn't responded to calls yet. No word if there will be a second take on the interview.
UPDATE: A production insider tells us Vienna was interrupting Jake constantly during the taping ... "Chris Harrison had to tell her over and over again to let him talk."
The insider also says "Vienna was in such a rage, if there was anyone to fear it was her."

Last night’s UFC 116 was a really exciting evening of non-stop action, coming from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main event Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin more than lived up to the hype surrounding it, and resulted in a brilliant win for Lesnar, making a fantastic comeback after a year following serious illness.
If you want to see our recap of Lesnar vs Carwin see here. We know what many of you want to see though is the video of the bout and so go to mixedmartialartsvideos.com here where there is a free online video to watch. You’ll be able to see for yourself what all the fuss was about if you missed the big event, and the look on Lesnar’s face when he gained the victory is worth seeing alone.
Others of you want to know the full results of all the other bouts too so we have them here. We know that Lesnar defeated Carwin in Round 2 with an arm triangle choke leading to submission. Chris Leben also ended his bout against Yoshihiro Akiyama with an arm triangle choke, this time in Round 3.
Chris Lytle beat Matt Brown forcing a submission with an armbar in the second round. For all other results go to USAToday, where you can see all the details for every bout. What a night it was for UFC. We’d like to know your thoughts on UFC 116, so why not let us have your comments.

A tasty rematch from the 2006 World Cup lies in wait for football fans when two of the most impressive teams of the tournament go head to head in the form of Germany and Argentina.
Many might argue that this would be a more fitting final to this competition, but fate has decreed that instead one footballing behemoth will go home early.
The last game was decided by a tense penalty shoot-out which (unsurprisingly) the German's won, largely due to Jens Lehmann's steely nerves, quicksilver reactions, and a little forward planning.
I'll compare the constituent parts of the two teams and try to predict whether one side has the edge over the other.
Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer vs. Sergio Romero.
Both keepers are young inexperienced at this level. Neuer is probably the better handler, but Romero is not as culpable of charging off of his line.
Both have good reflexes and can make excellent stops. Both have slightly questionable defences in front of them, but the German defence solidified against England while Martin Demichellis still looks a little unsteady. Expect both of them to have to earn their pay against strong attacking teams.
Defence: As previously mentioned, both defences have been questioned, but in 'typical German' fashion Germany's defence has started to function better as a unit. The Argentinian defence are suffering down the right, where Demichellis and the inexperienced Nicolas Otamendi have been the cause of shredded Argentinian nerves.
Both have holes and I believe that Mertesacker might struggle with the pace of the Argentinian forwards, while Klose knows Demichellis' weaknesses better than anyone, having played alongside him at Bayern for years. Expect goals.
Midfield: This will be a key duel. Both play deep strikers and look to pack out midfield with passing options. Messi and Oezil will look to drop back and collect the ball to cause problems and both teams have the pace to launch serious counter-attacks should a team lose the ball in a dangerous area.
Aging master Juan Sebastian Veron will look to dictate the tempo and flow of the game, and his opposite number in the form of the young pretender Bastian Schweinsteiger will look to do the same. These two midfielders will be the outlet that the defence will look to pass out to, and expect many attacks to come from these two deep pass-masters.
Both have capable lieutenants in the form of Sami Khedira and Javier Mascherano. Khedira will offer more threat going forward and offer an able defensive outlet, while Mascherano will be his typical self, snapping at opponents heels and being a general nuisance.
Attack: This is where both teams excel. The likes of tournament top scorer Gonzalo Higuain and ever dangerous Carlos Tevez will have to be watched carefully, and given no time to set themselves to shoot.
The most obvious threat is Lionel Messi, who has underperformed by his own incredibly high standards so far but is always capable of creating a moment of pure class which can change a game.
On the Teutonic side of things, the free flowing combination of Miroslav Klose, Mesut Oezil, Lukas Podolski, and Thomas Mueller will have to be defended against better than England managed or they have the potential to cause all sorts of problems for he Argentinian backline.
The Managers: How can we ignore the key influences of the managers.
Maradona has gone a long way towards persuading his critics (and there are plenty of them) that he might in fact be a capable manager.
Admittedly, with the resources at his disposal it makes the job somewhat easier, but he has fostered a real team spirit as witnessed by the over-the-top celebrations and affectionate kiss a player will receive from him. Might this man emulate the cool, calm, and calculated Franz Beckenbauer and win the World Cup as both player and manager? Only time can tell, but he is on the right track.
Speaking of cool and calculated Germans, current German manager Joachim Loew might also spring to mind. The well-dressed manager has had to deal with a hellish injury crisis, and he has dealt with it superbly. His trust in youth is absolute and he is known to be a meticulous planner. Expect clever tactical manouveres designed to keep key Argentinian's out of the game, and expect a tactic aimed at pace against the likes of Veron, Samuel and Demichellis. He has delivered more than many expected, and it is not out of the question that he does so again.
Conclusions: This game is balanced on a knife edge. Germany have lost, while Argentina have won every game so far, but Germany did progress from a far tougher group. The German's are just hitting top gear while for the Argentinian's this will represent the first true tough test of their World Cup. Both teams have players capable of changing a game, and I do think that the first goal will be crucial as it will leave the opposing defence open to counter-attacking football, which both teams are expert in.
This game is too tight to call, and has the potential to be the most exciting game of the World Cup so far, something we've heard before. Lets just hope it can live up to the billing. I back Oezil to shine again, and Higuain to either be prolific or profligate. Either way, bring on the game!
I don't have the nerve to call a prediction, but do you? Have I missed out an important danger-man? Let me know below.
