Mayweather vs. Mosley
If boxing were a nation, its capital these days would be the welterweight division. Among the 147-pounders are three or perhaps four of the premier pugilists in the world: Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts), Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KOs), "Sugar" Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs) and, on the cusp, Andre Berto (26-0, 20 KOs).
Messrs. Pacquiao and Mayweather are at the top of this short list and were supposed to tussle this spring. But that contest-in-the-making imploded over Mr. Mayweather's drug-testing demands on Mr. Pacquiao. Still, a matchup between Messrs. Mosley and Mayweather is almost as compelling as the contest that hit the canvas. This bout, which will take place Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is being touted as a fight between two of the best boxers of a generation and, for once, the promotion is without hyperbole. Both are certain first-ballot Hall of Fame candidates.
In 40 bouts, Mr. Mayweather, a six-time world champion, is undefeated and relatively untested. The only opponents to seriously challenge the Grand Rapids, Mich., native were Oscar De La Hoya and, to a lesser extent, José Luis Castillo. While some of the all-time greats lost fights and absorbed lessons from their setbacks, Mr. Mayweather's unblemished record is at the core of his sense of identity. For that reason, perhaps, he has not always taken on the most challenging opponents. Many, for instance, believe that Mr. Mayweather's issues with Mr. Pacquiao about the alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs were just an attempt to dodge the dangerous "Pac Man," or at least to postpone a clash with him until Mr. Mayweather was better prepared. But Mr. Mayweather, whose pay-per-view revenues are second only to Mike Tyson's, is clear about the bottom line of his boxing decisions: "I am a competitive athlete and before we make any fight the cash has to be right. When you are young, you fight to show you are better, and then you prove it. At this level, it's about money because I already proved the rest."
For Mr. Mosley, in contrast, boxing is now mostly about legacy. The five-time world champion emphasizes: "I'm fighting for my place in history. To be the best." Mr. Mosley's trainer, Nazim Richardson, was more specific. A few months ago he told me: "Shane wants to earn his 'sugar'—his place with the other sugars, Sugar Ray Robinson and Sugar Ray Leonard."
Before he beat superstar Antonio Margarito in 2009, Mr. Mosley was out-boxed by Miguel Cotto and, earlier, by both Winky Wright and Vernon Forrest. If he can be the first to put a loss in Mr. Mayweather's ledger, it would prove wrong the experts beginning to write his career's obituary. As Mr. Richardson put it: "Shane lives for this kind of fight." Mr. Mosley is as riveted to his task as an aspiring medical-school student boning up for the MCATs. The same can be said for the speedy and crafty boxer who will be his exam on Saturday night.
For all his shenanigans, the 33-year-old Mr. Mayweather is as disciplined as a monk when it comes to his art. He is always superbly conditioned. Emanuel Steward, the boxing commentator and legendary trainer, noted: "Floyd is not fooling around for this one. He is really focused. Honestly, I think this is the first time that he is in there with someone whom he thinks he could actually lose to." And with good reason; at 5 feet 9 inches, Mr. Mosley is a big, powerful welterweight who loves to exchange punches and who, even at the advanced boxing age of 38, is only a few nanoseconds slower than the 5-foot-8-inch Mr. Mayweather.
Mr. Mosley is strategically mum about his fight plan. He did, however, confide that he is working on his speed and on attacking at angles out of the plane of Mr. Mayweather's incomparable counterpunches. An assiduous student of the sweet science who is now training his son, Mr. Mosley is always trying to enhance his game by scrutinizing the films of past masters. Now, his film curriculum is centered on Sugar Ray Leonard. When I asked what he gleaned from watching Mr. Leonard, Mr. Mosley said: "His intense flurries and the way he would keep his balance while throwing all of those punches."
More than any other blow, Mr. Mayweather is vulnerable to a left jab. In the Mayweather vs. De La Hoya contest, so long as Mr. De La Hoya was pumping his jab, he was piling up rounds. But as that doyen of boxing technique, Bernard Hopkins, has commented: "It's true that you can hit Floyd with a jab, but sometimes he is just luring you in, letting you hit him, so that he can turn over that counterright." Mr. Mayweather, who has split-second reaction time, tucks his right by his chin and behind his slightly turned left shoulder, and then uncoils it as his foe comes charging in.
Mr. Richardson offered this appraisal: "Floyd is a sensational athlete. Everyone talks about how fast he is, but it's not his speed that makes him so special. It's his timing and punch placement. He times his counterpunches perfectly and puts them on those points where they really do some damage"—like the neural nexus that is the point of the chin. An example of Mr. Mayweather's crushing counterstrikes can be seen in his dramatic December 2007 knockout of the then-undefeated Ricky Hatton.
Fans of blood-and-guts boxing are not enthralled by Mr. Mayweather's circumspect approach to the sport. Some of these naysayers would even go so far as to suggest that Mr. Mayweather is too timorous to rumble. But Mr. Richardson disagrees: "I expect Shane to come out and hit Mayweather in the mouth with a right hand. Then Mayweather will sprout wings and a tail and turn into a dragon. I tell Shane to step away from his fireballs, step on his tail and punch him in the stomach and get him out of there." One point is certain: Whoever plays the part of the dragon slayer in this event will be looking forward to meeting the Filipino fireball, Mr. Pacquiao, in a fight that looms as large as any bout in decades.Mr. Marino writes about boxing for the Journal.

Oil spill could be disaster for animals, experts say
A huge oil spill oozing toward the Gulf Coast on Thursday threatens hundreds of species of wildlife, some in their prime breeding season, environmental organizations said.
The Coast Guard said Wednesday that the amount of oil spilling from an underwater well after an oil rig explosion last week has increased to as many as 5,000 barrels of oil a day, or 210,000 gallons, five times more than what was originally believed.
Although efforts to minimize the damage are under way and options under consideration include asking the U.S. military for assistance, wildlife conservation groups say the oil could pose a "growing environmental disaster."
"The terrible loss of 11 workers (unaccounted for after the rig explosion) may be just the beginning of this tragedy as the oil slick spreads toward sensitive coastal areas vital to birds and marine life and to all the communities that depend on them," said Melanie Driscoll, director of bird conservation for the Louisiana Coastal Initiative, in a statement.
Coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida could be at risk, the organization said.
"For birds, the timing could not be worse; they are breeding, nesting and especially vulnerable in many of the places where the oil could come ashore," she said. "The efforts to stop the oil before it reaches shore are heroic, but may not be enough. We have to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, including a true catastrophe for birds."
"The best case is, the wind shifts and the oil doesn't hit," said Tom MacKenzie of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "I'm not real confident about that. ... We're doing everything we can to prevent it, but it could be a bad one."
It's not just birds that could be affected, although they are usually the first to feel the effects, said Gregory Bossart, chief veterinary officer for the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. The birds are right at the surface, get covered in the oil and swallow it, causing liver and kidney problems.
"They need to be rescued and cleaned," he said.
But the coastline of Louisiana, with its barrier islands and estuaries, "is a very unique ecosystem. It's very complex," Bossart said.
Plankton found in the estuaries nourish organisms all the way up the food chain. Crabs, mussels, oysters and shrimp feed on the plankton, he said. Oil smothers the plankton, meaning they cannot eat.
Also, "the estuaries here are a nursery ground, literally a nursery ground, for the entire fish population in this area," Bossart said.
River otters in the region eat mussels and other animals. And "we know, in this area right now, that there are sperm whales. There are dolphins right in the oil slick," he said.
If an oil spill is small enough, animals can leave the area.
"Some of them can get away," Bossart said. "It's totally dependent on the size of the slick, and this is huge."
Exposure to the oil for a prolonged period of time can result in a toxic effect on the skin, and mammals can suffer lung damage or death after breathing it in, Bossart said.
"When the oil starts to settle, it'll smother the oyster beds. It'll kill the oysters," he said.
The Audubon Society, which is affiliated with the Louisiana Coastal Initiative, is recruiting volunteers in Florida and making its Center for Birds of Prey available for bird cleansing and rehabilitation. Elsewhere, Audubon said it was gearing up to mobilize volunteers and provide assistance as the oil reaches land.
The spill also threatens the Louisiana and Mississippi fishing industry, as crab, oysters and shrimp along the coast could be affected, along with numerous species of fish. Gulf shrimp are in their spawning season.
More than 400 species are threatened by the spill, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Thursday, citing the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
"When you stop and begin considering everything that this could impact, it really is stunning," Karen Foote, biologist administrator with the department, told the newspaper.
A handful of "Important Bird Areas" -- designated because of their value to bird species -- face immediate threat from the oil, the initiative said. They include the Chandeleur Islands and Gulf Islands National Seashore areas in Louisiana and Mississippi, along with the Active Delta area in Louisiana, which includes Delta Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Pass-a-Loutre Wildlife Management Area.
Several species of birds are cause for special concern, the Louisiana Coastal Initiative said. They include the brown pelican, the state bird of Louisiana, which nests on barrier islands and feeds near shore. The brown pelican's breeding season just began, according to the Initiative, and "many pairs are already incubating eggs."
The species was taken off the federal endangered species list last year, but "their relatively low reproductive rate means any disruption to their breeding cycle could have serious effects on the population."
More than 800 brown pelicans died when a smaller oil spill hit Louisiana's Breton Island National Wildlife Refuge a few years ago, MacKenzie said.
Species of beach-nesting terns and gulls, beach-nesting shorebirds, large wading birds, marsh birds and ocean-dwelling birds are also at risk, along with migratory shorebirds and songbirds, the Initiative said.
The migratory songbirds move across the Gulf during a two-week period from late April to early May, for instance.
"The journey across 500 miles of open water strains their endurance to its limits," the Initiative said. "They depend on clear skies and healthy habitats on both sides of the Gulf in order to survive the journey."
According to a 1998 study by Louisiana State University, more than 500 million birds fly over the Gulf and enter the United States along coastal areas in Louisiana and Texas each spring.
The barrier islands east of Louisiana's Lake Pontchartrain have still not recovered from the blow dealt by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Bossart said, and a spill such as this one could seriously threaten their recovery.
"I think at this point it would be wrong to say it's catastrophic, because it really hasn't hit any area except out in the Gulf proper," he said. But "it's certainly a very serious thing" that could pose a long-term environmental challenge.
Plans have been under way to protect wildlife since the spill was discovered, MacKenzie said. "We know what we're doing to try to protect those key assets. ... A lot of people are leaning forward in the foxhole to address this."

New Music: Drake – Find Your Love
“I better find your loving…I better find your heart,” Drake tweeted early this morning (April 29), and just minutes later the second single from his highly-anticipated album, Thank Me Later, was unleashed to the internet where fans quickly rushed to get a listen.
“Find Your Love,” produced by hip-hop genius Kanye West, finds rap’s most valuable rookie slipping into R&B mode and getting his Trey Songz on as he sings about cautiously giving himself to a special lady and hoping she returns the favor.
The mechanical beats, thumping drums, and “hey hey hey” refrains will almost immediately call to mind West’s Grammy-snubbed masterpiece 808’s and Heartbreak, but don’t be so quick to write “Find Your Love” off as a copycat or reject. Arizona immigration bill protest (April 24) VIDEO
Fox 10 Phoenix reports: The fight over Senate Bill 1070 took to the streets of downtown Phoenix, as riot Police were called to the Capitol to control an unruly group of protesters.
Witnesses say a group protesting against SB1070 began to fight with a man who was for the controversial immigration bill.
Police tried escorting that man away from the scene, fearing for his safety, when they too came under attack by people throwing items, including water bottles.
A young man was arrested during that melee.
Things calmed down moments later, but riot Police remained at the capital to maintain some sort of order.
Did Siobhan Magnus ride Twain to glory?
Who Got Kicked out of American Idol (April 28) Top 5 Finalist?
Tonight American Idol announced the top 5 finalists. The person kicked off “American Idol” April 28 was Siobhan Magnus. “American Idol’s” most eccentric contestant this season didn’t have the votes to make it into the top 5.
Did America get it right? Who should have gone instead?
Magnus, 19, came from Cape Cod, Mass., with a background in glass-blowing and friends who called themselves Siobhan-bies
Magnus was joined in the bottom two with Casey James and Big Mike Lynche. Next week: The top five take on Frank Sinatra with the help of mentor Harry Connick Jr.
American Idol TOP 5 are as follow: Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze, Michael Lynche (aka Big Mike), Casey James and Aaron Kelly.
AMERICAN IDOL RECAP: Shania on Fiya
I took a week off from American Idol coverage last week because of deadlines elsewhere in my life, but that's okay because really all we missed was the lame "inspirational" week, which somehow left us hearing Casey James singing theme-inappropriate Fleetwood Mac and Tim Urban taking on a forgettable Goo Goo Dolls song. Sure, there were standout moments, such as when Crystal Bowersox broke down in tears at the end of her performance, but ultimately, the night was more noteworthy for the duds, such as Big Mike's horrendous cover of the already horrendous tune, "Hero," from Spider-Man. Simon maligned him for choosing a song about the webby superhero, but let's not forget that Siobahn's tune came from The Prince of Egypt, and of course Aaron Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" is from the one and only Space Jam. Sounds like those two got off the hook easy.
Point is, the week was kind of lame, and it was made lamer by the Idol Gives Back bonanza, which was really only notable for the hilarious skewering Wanda Sykes gave the show midway through. When the dust settled and the poor kids shuttled back to Appalachia, it was Tim Urban who got the boot, thus bringing an end to a charitable week by destroying one person's dreams. Way to go.
Idol got back on track last night, however, with an evening of Shania Twain's music. I can't say I was terribly enthused by this theme, but I did thoroughly enjoy Shania as a guest judge earlier this season, and as such, I felt she would serve as a solid mentor. Turns out I was right. Unlike others (cough, Miley Cyrus) who gave generic advice, Shania seemed both enthusiastic and well-informed in her interactions with the contestants. She's definitely television-ready, and had the producers not already settled on Ellen as a permanent guest judge, I would advocate strongly for Shania to be on the panel. At least Shania wouldn't make repeatedly dumb puns about her last name ("All aboard the Shania Twain," was one of Ellen's not so wonderful nuggets).
Anyway, the night kicked off with Lee Dewyze, who I think is in danger of becoming one of the most overhyped contestants of the season. The judges truly love him, but I'm not getting it. Sometimes the guy shows flashes of brilliance, but usually he sounds uneven and unsteady. Admittedly, when he belts out high notes, he improves drastically, but I guess my problem with Lee is that he's more or less forgettable (unless accompanied by a roving bagpiper). I didn't understand all the praise heaped on him last week for "The Boxer," and I equally was as confounded by the gushing over his pleasant but forgettable take on Shania's seminal crossover hit, "Still The One." It was fine -- don't get me wrong -- but like the song itself (which I do NOT think is one of the greatest ever, Randy) -- it went in one ear and out the other.
Next up was Michael Lynche, who has yet to earn back my endorsement after choosing that Spider-Man song last week. The guy unquestionably has talent (and an appetite -- is it me, or has he been packing on the pounds lately? Perhaps some late onset sympathy pregnancy weight); however, there's something about Michael's personality that's approaching annoying. I don't know what it is, but I'll chalk it up to cockiness (and perhaps memories of that proposed "pec contest") and leave it at that. To his credit, Big Mike did a lovely job with "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing," a song I'd never heard but thought was sort of -- dare I say it -- tragically beautiful? I dug the performance, I dug the song, and I dug the singing. Michael is not my favorite, and if he were to be sent home for some reason, I'd be okay with it, but he deserves to hang around another week.
As for Casey James, he's either awesome or generic, and this week he was awesomely generic. I mean that in the best possible way. Singing "Don't," Casey delivered the sort of polished, professional, and run-of-the-mill pop rock song that we hear on the radio all the time (think Nickelback, Switchfoot, Gavin DeGraw, Hinder). In fact, the song was so expert in its forgettable-ness that it became memorable. What I mean is that Casey himself wasn't forgettable, but he provided us with the type of formulaic tune that would just sit and linger on radio airplay lists for months on end -- and for that he has to be commended. After all, this is a search ostensibly for a recording artist, and last night, Casey proved he could have relevancy (albeit in an annoying form) on the radio. As such, the judges praised him with some of them saying it was his best performance to date. Personally, I'd reserve that for whatever that acoustic ditty was a few weeks ago. To me, that was his high point (even if I can't remember its name for the life of me -- too lazy to Google).
Next up was Crystal Bowersox, who tends to be amazing with everything she does. Well, usually amazing. With a cute, fun musical ensemble on stage with her, Crystal performed a hokey and pleasant version of "No One Needs to Know," which was just lovely, but in the game of Idol, it didn't have the chops to really wow the judges. Luckily, Crystal has earned enough capital with the audience that hopefully she'll be around next week, but you never know, especially since she was the only performer to receive overall negative reviews for the night.
It's kind of curious because Aaron Kelly surely deserved a spot in the losers circle with his typically uneven crooning of "You've Got A Way," but no, the judges just adored him. Even Simon heaped praise on the kid, who alarmingly sang a love song to his own mother. The good news is that Aaron switched the lyric about having sex because, well, one could only imagine the awkwardness had he sung "It's in the way we make love" to Mommie dearest. Nevertheless, the kid certainly has a voice, but it's not there yet, and he still seems petrified of the stage. I swear, you'd think he'd crap his pants if he saw a moth, let alone a few hundred people staring at him. I actually thought he might just throw up on the stage after Simon extolled his virtues. Come to think of it, had Aaron done that, I might have actually endorsed him. Oh well. Maybe next week.
Last but certainly not least was Siobhan, who finally returned to glory with a great performance of "Any Man of Mine." First off, the girl actually had fun on stage, making her the only performer to veer from a sleepy ballad. Second, her voice seemed tailor made for country-pop, and for once her two ranges (low and husky vs. high and shrieky) felt perfectly meshed, especially with another monster scream note finale at the end. Sometimes they work; sometimes they don't. This time, the histrionics most certainly worked, and I'm happy to report that Siobhan returned to the winner's circle once again. The judges all loved it, and I think it's safe to say that as long as Siobhan stays away from weepy dirges, she'll remain the fun wild-card in the competition.
So now who goes home? Given that everyone received great reviews except for Crystal, it's hard to say. I'd say that Lee and Aaron are in the hot seat, and perhaps Big Mike might join them. However, when the numbers get to this point, it's anyone's game. I guess we'll find out soon enough...
Siobhan Magnus ‘Any Man Of Mine’ on American Idol
Siobhan Magnus went back to screaming, but the Robot Fighter fan in me just won’t allow me to hate on the rather odd Magnus, who I think does is as proficient in the Clark Kent to Lady Gaga (and everything in between) transformation I’ve seen in awhile. Magnus performed Shania Twain’s ‘Any Man of Mine’, as the country/pop star served as this week’s American Idol mentor. Siobhan closed out the show with her performance, the results of which we will find out tonight. I kind of dig Magnus, though like Simon, could do without the loud climax (in this situation). All in all, kind of hot.

During the weekend, for example, they went to Voyeur in West Hollywood, entered into the club hand-in-hand sporting matching black hoodies. There, they joined some friends, perched on the banquette and shared a few kisses. They "acted like they were the only two in the club" and stayed out until closing time, one eyewitness revealed.
Recently the couple who secretly started dating this February, got matching tattoos in Las Vegas.
Glee Eipsode 'Home': 'One Less Bell to Answer' & 'A House is Not a Home' (video)
Glee episode tonight goes 'Home' with Kristin Chenoweth. Singing duos with Matthew Morrison, the two song 'One Less Bell to Answer' & 'A House is Not a Home' are on tonight's episode.
The Glee cast is joined by Kristin Chenoweth in an episode called 'Home' tonight. The episode, probably one that has more emotion than in the entire series, gives Chenoweth the spotlight and shows she is a great asset to the show.
Glee has been chatted up since last week's Madonna numbers. This popular show has become even more popular bringing in big names and wonderful voices. Chenoweth brings the bar up even farther with her number 'Home.'
Currently Chenoweth is on Broadway and had just opened a lead role in 'Promises, Promises.' The star studded actress is not only known for her voice but also her amazing performances on television, movies and Broadway.
The cast of Glee has been twittering this episode of the show is probably one of the best so far when it comes to the guest star. Putting the Glee spin on Kristin Chenoweth wasn't just fun for the cast, it really did sound wonderful for the audience as well.
Lyrics of 'One Less Bell to Answer' & 'A House is Not a Home':
One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
I should be happy
But all I do is cry
Cry cry, no more laughter,
I should be happy
Oh why did she go?
I only know that since he left
My life's so empty
Though I try to forget it, just can't be done
Each time the doorbell rings, I still run
I don't know how in the world
to stop thinking of him, 'cause I still love him so..
I am detained, the way I start out
Crying my heart out
One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
No more laughter
No more love.....
Since he went away (X2)
Ooohhh
A chair is still a chair
Even when there's no one sitting there
Well I'm not meant to live alone
Turn this house into a home
When I climb the stair and turn the key
Ohhh, please be there....
Still in love with me
One less bell to answer
Each time the doorbell rings I still run
One less man to pick up after
No more laughter
No more love...
Since he went away (X2)
All I do is cry
American Idol April 27: Crystal Bowersox Sings No One Needs to Know by Shania Twain (Video & Lyrics)
Crystal Bowersox performed Noone Needs to Know Right Now by Shania Twain on American Idol 2010. Ugh. If Crystal Bowersox was shooting for an interpretation that sounded like it came off of a 1971 recording of the Grand Ol' Opry, she nailed it. Otherwise, what was she thinking? Has Crystal Bowersox quit? Has she decided to get to go home by elimination? This was a terrible choice of song and an even worse interpretation. This was not an American Idol Top 6 song.
it looks like Crystal Bowersox opened the door for Siobhan Magnus (who also had a lame performance) and a few others to wrestle the American Idol season 9 crown from her.
Just when you thought it was all wrapped up, just after we got to celebrate Kate Gosselin not being on Dancing with the Stars, just when everything is right in the universe, Crystal Bowersox comes out on stage and lays the biggest egg of her life!
'Dancing With the Stars' Results: April 27, Week 5 Elimination
Jake Pavelka was sent home from 'Dancing With the Stars.'Despite Len Goodman's protests, Erin Andrews and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were the first to go to the safe zone. Chad Ochocinco and Cheryl Burke received the judge's encore and performed their smoldering tango for the second time.
Melissa Etheridge performed songs from her new CD, 'Fearless Love.'
Unlike last week, Pamela Anderson found herself safe from the bottom two, with Niecy Nash joining Jake Pavelka at the bottom.
After being ejected, Pavelka and Hightower went backstage to walk the press line where they spoke to AOL TV. The former 'Bachelor' star got choked up as he gave all the credit for making it as far as he did in the competition to Hightower.
"Chelsie was my secret weapon this season," Pavelka says, "I'm sorry we didn't get a win. Chelsie's good enough to win this. She deserved to win."
Shania Twain Songs
Tonight on American Idol, it would be Shania Twain songs night. Would the idol wannabees give justice to Shania Twain songs? I think that some would make a good job out of it but I am also sure that many would butcher her songs. I love Shania Twain songs, I love their melodies and I love her voice, I could not imagine how it would come out if someone else would be singing her songs.
'American Idol' recap: Music of Shania Twain
On tonight's American Idol, the Top 6 are taking on the songs of Shania Twain. As mentor, she tells the contestants they need to interpret the songs and make them her own. Lee DeWyze is first, and he's singing "You're Still the One." Shania tells him he is rushing the guitar somewhat and gets him to slow it down a little. I think maybe she should have suggested he start a little lower in the chorus because it's a little rough, but overall still good, typical Lee. Randy Jackson says this is one of his all-time favorite songs. He says he was worried for him, but he found his sweet spot in the lower part of his register. Ellen DeGeneres says it was better than "pretty good" and that he made it his own. Kara DioGuardi says his voice makes every song sound "so relevant." She thinks it was "a good job." Simon Cowell agrees with "everything everyone's said." (Whoa, Twilight Zone.) He says he was pulling some weird faces here and there.
Michael Lynche is singing "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing." Shania Twain says he takes the song to a whole other place. He does a lovely job with it, and Shania is even tearing up in the audience. Randy says he was in the zone of who he is. Ellen says she was nervous, but it felt like Luther Vandross singing that song, and she felt all his emotion. Kara says he is always connected to the songs, and he put his mark on it. Simon agrees with Ellen's Luther analogy. But he thinks the performance was "wet," but no one really understands what he's talking about. He says it was "a little bit girly for you."
Casey James tells Ryan that after last week, he went through all his performances and realized that last week, he didn't give anyone anything new. He is singing "Don't." Shania tells him to let his confidence come out through the song. He says it's "a singing song," and probably the first one of those he's done in a while. I think he's probably right -- this is way more of a performance than a jam. Randy says this was one of the best Casey James performances ever and he hopes Casey really learned something from this. Ellen says he sang it like that's where he belongs. She thinks it was his best to date. Kara says artists don't hide, and tonight that is what he was doing, he was out there. Simon says last week was a much-needed wakeup call and he agrees with Randy that it was his best performance.
Oooh! Did you see the So You Think You Can Dance ad? The Top 10 will be paired with 10 all stars from past seasons. (Yes, I know this is old news that Nigel has been tweeting about for ages, but now it's really real!)
Crystal Bowersox says she loved working with Shania because she is so nice and is surrounded by an aura of positivity. Shania says she should bring in a more positive feeling to her tone because this is a peppy song. Crystal interviews that it's a message to her boyfriend, who will "man up" one of these days. Heh. She sings "No One Needs to Know," and it's sweet and fun, a bit of a change for her. Plus, she seamlessly harmonizes with her background singer -- how many times have we seen people mess that up on this show? Randy says it felt like Nickel Creek, but it wasn't his favorite performance, but he's glad she did a country performance. Ellen says there is nothing she can't do, though it wasn't her favorite either. Kara says it's impossible for not to sound good because she's so authentic, but it wasn't her best. Simon says it was limp and felt like a coffee shop where they hire people to sing when you don't really want them to.
Aaron Kelly is singing "You Got a Way" and he tells her he is debating about some part of it. She tells him to stop thinking so much about hitting the notes and just feel the song. He sings and reminds us that he has a big voice -- it's one of his better performances, I'd say. Randy says this is his wheelhouse and that he did a really good job. Ellen says this week is going to be tough because everyone is doing so well. Kara says he really felt the words and he changed a line. He adds that he was singing the song to his mom, which is why he changed the line. Simon says he's struggled the past couple of weeks, but tonight "you were like a different artist."
Siobhan Magnus is singing Shania's first No. 1 hit, "Any Man of Mine." Shania tells her to put some character into the words to make them come alive. She sings it fast and with some attitude, and then closes with a couple of those huge, incredible notes. I don't always feel her big notes, but tonight they worked. Randy says he loved it, loved it, loved it. Ellen says it was fantastic and a good way to end the show. Kara says Siobhan is back. Simon says he really, really liked the song, though the thought the end went on a little too long. He says it was like she was giving birth up there if you just heard that note in isolation (bahahahahaha), but he liked it.
M.I.A.: "Born Free"
W.O.W. A shocker of a video for M.I.A.'s new single "Born Free" is out. The track will be included on her forthcoming Neet/Interscope release. Here's a tracklist for the yet-untitled album.
Watch video on Vimeo (not worksafe, and not for kids: nudity/sex/violence). Directed by Romain Gavras, full credits here. A live version is here. You can listen to the track here.
The song is a thrilling, aggressive, hardcore electric anthem and heavily samples "Ghost Rider" by Suicide (ca. 1977, buy MP3 here). As my friend Clayton wonders aloud, perhaps the lyrics "America America is killing its youth" in the Suicide song influenced the visuals in the M.I.A. video.
At the risk of spoiling the video for first-timers (and making too much light of the themes of racism and militarism it addresses), I will say only three words: global ginger jihad.
M.I.A. Unleashes Violent Video for "Born Free"
Almost immediately after M.I.A.'s graphic new video for "Born Free" arrived this morning, it was yanked from YouTube for its stark violence, which includes a child being shot in the head at point-blank range and another youngster being obliterated by a land mine. The explicit version of the clip, which is still streaming on M.I.A.'s MIAUK.com website, is likely the most disturbing video you'll see all year: a nearly nine-minute-long comment on military violence, discrimination and how the media depicts shocking imagery. The song is slated to appear on the singer-rapper's as-yet-untitled June album.
As "Born Free" — M.I.A.'s take on Suicide's classic "Ghost Rider" — pounds in the background like an aural assault, the video depicts a SWAT unit tearing apart an apartment complex and beating its tenants in search of an unknown perpetrator, who turns out to be a redheaded young man. Masked, heavily armed military men force him into a truck holding more redheads and drive them to a remote desert holding station, where they proceed to murder the outcasts.
"Born Free" was directed by filmmaker Romain Gavras, who previously helmed the ultraviolent video for Justice's "Stress." Gavras is also the son of Costa-Gavras, the acclaimed director of films including Z and Missing, which were controversial for their scathing and allegorical look into the politics of the late Sixties and early Eighties, respectively. "Any resemblance to real events, to persons living or dead, is not accidental. It is DELIBERATE," read the opening credits of Costa-Gavras' Z, and Gavras' vision in "Born Free" aligns itself heavily with that mantra. By presenting an unflinching account of the U.S.' shakedown of one group, Gavras and M.I.A. draw potent comparisons to many of the U.S. government's questionable decisions in the past decade, from the treatment of terror suspects to our role in the wars in the Middle East and Afghanistan to the recent immigration laws passed in Arizona.
After announcing the premiere of the "Born Free" video earlier today via a tweet, the Sri Lankan MC took over Pitchfork's Twitter, where she has revealed the potential 10-song track list for her upcoming album.
Check out Rolling Stone's 40 Reasons to Get Excited About Music in our current issue for more on M.I.A.'s new disc.
M.I.A.'s Untitled Album's Potential Track List:
1. "The Message"
2. "Born Free"
3. "Meds and Feds"
4. "Lovealot"
5. "Tequilla"
6. "It Is What It Is"
7. "XXXO"
8. "Tell Me Why"
9. "Story Told"
10. "Space"

“Iron Man 2″ Premiere In Los Angeles
After some silly little volcano in Iceland tanked the “Iron Man 2″ premiere in London, Paramount Pictures did the next best thing and moved it back to Hollywood. I mean, where else were they gonna go, New York? Not a chance! The Iron Man 2 premiere was held at the El Capitan Theater (which is right across from the Grauman’s Chinese Theater) in the heart of Hollywood.
All the Iron Man 2 peeps were in full attendance this afternoon including RDJ, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson, and Jon Favreau.
First reviews of 'Iron Man 2' appear
"Iron Man 2" has its mega world premiere in Hollywood in just a couple of hours, but the movie screened today in the U.K., where it opens this Friday. (Yes, much of the world gets to see it a week before North America.)
A popular U.K. blog, Hey You Guys, seems to have the the first review. I'm going to try holding off reading these as long as possible but you guys feel free to indulge.
And I just came across a take on the movie from the Mirror, which is billing itself as having the first review (sorry buddy). I'm not reading it but I can't help but notice the headline: "mind-numbingly dull, chaotic and unwatchable."
The President who was Sworn on a Catholic Missal
The only president in the history of the United States of America who was sworn on a Catholic Missal was Lyndon B. Johnson. After President John F. Kennedy’s assassination Johnson was to be sworn as President, but he was in Air Force One at that time and there was no formal Catholic Text available for the oath, the only Catholic text in the plane a Missal. Due to the sensitivity of the situation the Catholic Missal was taken as the sacred text and the president took his oath on the book.
For those who don’t know what a Missal is; it’s a book that contains instructions and texts that help priests perform the celebration Mass throughout the year. The book has been assembled and arranged by priests as a reference for the prayers and method of the ritual necessary to perform the Mass.
For those who don’t know what a “Mass” is, it’s a celebration that represents the Eucharist. The Eucharist basically portrays the last meal that Jesus Christ shared with his followers before he was taken away and then ultimately crucified. The Eucharist is depicted in many churches as a picture in which Jesus is holding up a piece of bread and a glass of grape juice. The Eucharist is also called the last supper in which Jesus gave his followers bread saying “this is my body”, and gave grape juice saying “this is my blood”.
This Ritual is performed by catholic priests throughout the year as a celebration of the event and the oath of a president on the book of Missal is though not objectionable in any way, but is definitely unusual and unorthodox.
Who Deserves to Win RuPaul's Drag Race?
Some reality competition shows are over the hill — and it shows — but the comparatively young RuPaul’s Drag Race is so fun and fresh-faced that it doesn’t even need to make use of its own gauzy lenses. Tonight, we’ll find out whether Jujubee, Raven, or Tyra Sanchez will take home the top prize, and frankly, I’m more invested in this outcome than I ever was in the shows that Drag Race parodies (like America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway). Here’s what the three remaining queens have going for and against them:
Jujubee
Working for her: Has the sweetest attitude (a major plus in RuPaul’s book) but can also throw the best shade, is the wittiest, has a sad “doing it for my dead father” backstory, is definitely the audience favorite
Working against her: Has the least impressive fashions (and most likely the loss of Santino’s support), is trending downward after several placements in the bottom two
Raven
Working for her: Has second-half momentum, resembles Joey Lawrence, killed the judges flat with her Barbra Streisand look, is smart and savvy
Working against her: Has the worst attitude of all three girls, has been the victim of a mean edit in the last few episodes (and on Untucked) that suggests she won’t win
Tyra Sanchez
Working for her: Has never been in the bottom two, has the most impressive fashions, can do realness the best, has improved throughout the competition, is always a little bit funnier than you thought, is clearly Santino’s favorite…
Working against her: …but also may have stolen Santino’s basso voice, is awfully similar to
last year’s winner on looks alone, has a bad attitude
On speculation alone, I’d wager that Raven will place third, leaving the tiara up to Juju and Tyra. The judges obviously want to give it to Juju — that’s why they’ve dragged her this far and into the finals — but if she can’t bring it, Tyra will have to win the grand prize. Unless I’m wrong. And I almost certainly am! What do you think?

Here is the recap for the Season 2 Finale of Rupaul Drag Race.
After the queens have completed a challenge (often in groups) they must then present their own unique costumes in a beauty-contest-style runway strut. Though the judges help RuPaul decide who fared the best and worst each week, ultimately the final decision is RuPaul’s. She allots the queens one final opportunity to prove their worth to her as she announces that “The time has come for you to lip-sync for your life!” The two bottom contestants face off head-to-head by dancing and lip-syncing the same song. Whoever delivers the best performance may “Chante” and stay, and the loser must “Sashay away.”
Is Tyra Sanchez deserving? The best woman has already been announced, and yes. The latest Rupaul Drag Race Season 2 Finale Update comes to a conclusion with Tyra Sanchez as the Winner.
Tyra Sanchez wins RuPaul’s Drag Race!
The end has come when no one has to lip sync for their life. Tyra Sanchez has taken the crown for the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and it ain’t pretty. Many people are fuming mad on Twitter exclaiming their reaction to the win. Many wanted JujuBee to win and some think Raven deserved it. We personally think the contestants of the season were mostly not that great.

History of Missal
Before the compilation of such books, several books were used when celebrating Mass. These included the Gradual (texts mainly from the Psalms, with musical notes added), the Evangelary or Gospel Book, the Epistolary with texts from other parts of the New Testament, mainly the Epistles (letters) of Saint Paul, and the Sacramentary with the prayers that the priest himself said.
In late mediaeval times, when it had become common in the West for priests to say Mass without the assistance of a choir and other ministers, these books began to be combined into a "Mass book" (missale in Latin), for the priest's use alone. This led to the appearance of the missale plenum ("full or complete missal"), which contained all the texts of the Mass, but without the music of the choir parts. Indications of the rubrics to be followed were also added.
