M. Night Shyamalan’s film adaptation of stunning animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender arrives in July. But we’re betting the movie will have an exceedingly hard time matching the brilliance of the original television show.
We’re putting two free copies of the Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 Collector’s Edition DVD set on the line to back up that speculation. Who wants to gamble with us?
The engaging Nickelodeon series introduced a fantastic, Eastern-influenced world in which tribes of “benders” manipulate elements like fire, water and earth. Pint-size hero Aang, the Avatar mentioned in the series’ title, must use his extraordinary airbending powers to take down the evil Fire Lord. The exhaustive Airbender box set, out Tuesday, features all of Season 1’s 20 episodes on six discs, as well as a bonus disc showing off new interviews, development art and more. Also included is an exclusive preview book of Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Art of the Animated Series, released in May from Dark Horse Comics.
Screen the exclusive video below for some behind-the-scenes disclosures from Avatar: The Last Airbender series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, as well as martial arts consultant Sifu Kisu. Then bend your way toward the comments section and let us know what Shyamalan’s film must include, and exclude, if it’s going to fire up not just Airbender loyalists but also new adopters in search of shelter from middling 2010 cinematic fare like Jonah Hex, Prince of Persia and worse.
Two level-headed entries embracing both Avatar’s fiery fandom and cold economic reality will score free copies of Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 Collector’s Edition. Contest ends 12:01 a.m. Pacific on July 1, 2010.
